It's been a while since I caught my breath long enough to post something here, but this was impossible to resist. And since I am (1) a nerd, and (2) a theology student, the sins come with color commentary from theologians across the ages. Luxuria [Lust] Oh Lord, give me chastity, but do not give it yet! --Saint Augustine, Confessions This song doesn't just say not yet! but also probably not ever. "Striptease" by [...]

I have to admit, I don't know very much about Luke Doucet . I stumbled across him last year whilst perusing the Interwebs and another site had posted a couple of his tracks. Lucky Luke was described as a kick ass guitarist and a Canuck, so I figured those bona fides alone were worth checking out his stuff. I heard "Emily, Please" from Broken (And Other Rogue States) and realized this guy was the real deal, as it easily was one of the best tracks I heard in '07. Obviously, there was much rejoicing when [...]

A large U.S. spy satellite has lost power and could hit the Earth in late February or early March, government officials said Saturday. Not my department... Asteroid 2007 TU24 will pass within 1.4 lunar distances, or 538,000 kilometers (334,000 miles), of Earth on Jan. 29 at 12:33 a.m. Pacific time ...not assigned here, either. [...]

Luke Doucet is a seasoned pro that's watched the odometer turn for more years than you can imagine. A full-time guitarist since he was a young man, Doucet has played countless style of music and this record seems to be his subtle tip of the cap to each one. Like most Canadians, Doucet grew up with Neil Young and clearly that inspires him on Blood's Too Rich , but so many other genres help form his sound on this record. Whether it's his Stray Cat strut or his noir-influence (although I'm not sure how well [...]

Halifax, Nova Scotia native Luke Doucet released his seventh album (third solo) yesterday, Blood's Too Rich . Backed by his band The White Falcon, this highly anticipated album showcases Doucet's adept songwriting skills, as he weaves stories of family and friends; of past experiences and history only heard of. The album drips with a deep sense of Canadian roots rock, effortlessly turning the Cure's "The Lovecats" into a barn storming, foot stomping classic rock number. It sits beside some of Doucet's most earnest compositions, and the best songs [...]

I went to Yorkdale mall on the weekend. This is one of the few malls in Canada where Music World still exists. On top of that, it happens to be more conveniently located than the HMV. So I approach the store, only to realize that they're having a store closing sale. No! You can't do that! You're pretty much the only other CD/DVD store in Canada! You've survived alongside HMV and the internet for so long! I respected you because of that! You're the alternative! You're Canadian! Fight the power! But I suppose we all saw [...]

Several months ago I got an album in my mailbox with this depressed looking chap on the cover, submerged fully-clothed in his bathtub. When you feel like doing that you are probably not in the happiest of mindsets, so I first dismissed it as sad sap break-up music and I'll admit that I tossed it into a pile of "To Listen On A Day When I Am Sadder" albums. I was doing myself a disservice by not listening to this gem immediately. The 2005 album is called Broken (and other rogue states) [...]
Someone sure broke Luke Doucet's heart, the poor boy. But fortunately for the rest of the world, he turned his pain into art. Broken (and Other Rogue States) is a fantastic collection of heartbreak,... **Click on the link to read the full post, download mp3s, and comment.**

Six, or seven, weeks to go until the music starts at SXSW (March 14th), I won't be there, but I guarantee you that the buzz that'll build in the indie music community will be like a pot of strong coffee to me. Last year SXSW had a massive amount of music and the same will be true this year. You may already know that the festival for the past couple of years has hosted hundreds and hundreds of mp3s of bands that were showcaseds at Austin, although this year's showcase mp3s aren't online yet, last years are still [...]
