Vuosi 2009 oli musiikin suhteen kaiken kaikkiaan laadukas. Parhaiden tuotosten listaamisessa ei ollut ongelmana sopivien ehdokkaiden löytäminen, vaan pikemminkin maratonikatsauksen välttäminen runsaan tarjonnan vuoksi. Listalle valikoitui lopulta monta loistavaa, miltei täydellistä suoritusta (mm.

Yep, it's a day late. Probably two if you live in a different time zone. It's part three of my top 40 albums of 2009. If we look back at the month of May, it seems like the majority of my favourites were released all at the same time, including albums from the Manics, IAMX, Morton Valence, Jarvis Cocker, Archivist, and The Rest. We also had new records that have already graced this list, including The Horrors' Primary Colours and Phoenix's Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix . The month was rounded out with albums by Maximo Park, Peaches, Esser, [...]

Filed under: News , UK What with the Jedward controversy and Simon Cowell's near-tactical insistence of leaving things to the public vote, talent show 'The X Factor' has come under some uncharacteristic flak from all quarters. Yet riding to its rescue is a most unlikely source -- Black Box Recorder and former Auteurs front man Luke Haines . Speaking to the Quietus , the legendarily misanthropic singer has claimed that 'The X Factor' is punk rock for the 21st Century.

Known for his highly literate lyrics on his solo work, along with his time spent in the Auteurs and Black Box Recorder, Luke Haines has a new album out called 21st Century Man . Jarvis Cocker's oddly priapic solo release this year, Further Complications , was mostly disappointing, but for those looking for a witty, smart and musical Cocker-like album for 2009, they should definitely check out Mr. Haines' new work. Neil Young wrote Southern Man as an anti-slavery missive about the American South, and with his new album, Haines [...]

Nostalgia has always played a part in the music of Luke Haines . Scattershot references to the people, places and events that informed his childhood litter his work. From Auteurs lyrics that detail the minutiae of British 'culture', through the explicit use of the Baader Meinhof name, on to the subtle use of imagery such as Lord Lucan in his band's artwork, the 1970s are nearly always present in one form or another. Although not necessarily in a positive way. Where Ray Davies detailed the quirky aspects of British [...]

At the end of last month, in the run-up to mentioning Mrs Villain's birthday, I posted some tracks that I wouldn't have otherwise originally got my hands on if it hadn't been for the work of quality bloggers the world over. I promised I would return to that theme...and so courtesy of Larissa (aka Anglopunk ), FiL, Simon, tart, Bitter Andrew and Colin [...]

Luke Hainesin (The Auteurs, Black Box Recorder, Baader Meinhof) uudesta soololevystä on alkanut tihkua tietoa. Mahtipontisesti nimetty 21st Century Man ilmestyy 2. marraskuuta. Rajoitetun digipack-painoksen mukana tulee myös 9 biisin bonuslevy Achtung Mutha . Levyn tiedote antaa kuvaa tulevasta: In 2009 and with the release of 21st Century Man, Luke Haines has finally cemented his place as one of the greatest English contemporary songwriters. He may be equally at home writing about teenage sex, terrorism, pop/film stars, child murder or broken love affairs but he's excelled himself on this, his fifteenth album [...]

I finally got to see the film version of David Peace's The Damned Utd and it was well worth the wait. Tom Hooper's The Damned United is a fine adaptation of its source material and is the best film that I've seen about football. Like the novel, the film is a fictionalised account of Brian Clough's brief tenure in charge of Leeds United in 1974. And, like the book, episodes from 1974 are alternated with flashbacks to Clough's previous stint in charge of Derby County The film is very funny and this is due to a [...]
There's been an substantial number of good reviews about this book.....and here's another one coming. For those of you who don't know, Luke Haines first came to fame as a member of The Autuers, before later making records under his own name, as well as a member of Baader Meinhof and Black Box Recorder. The fact that first chart success coincided with the rise of a few other UK bands at a time
Luke Haines is doing the promotional rounds as he publishes his sort-of memoir Bad Vibes: Britpop And My Part In Its Downfall The Scotsman meets him : As for the Britpop movement, Haines may have damned it at the time, but is even less happy with its legacy. "The worst thing about that whole period was that, with the exception of Pulp, it kind of quashed any kind of eccentricity in British music. Britpop really flattened it all out and left us with these homogenous guitar bands. Nowadays it would be a [...]

LUKE HAINES: BAD VIBES - BRITPOP AND MY PART IN ITS DOWNFALL "First, you fail. After four years of gigs no-one attends, songs no-one hears, perfected haircuts no-one sees, late 80s Camden – where Shane McGowan is [...]
Over now, on MySpace: Rare Victory , a musical tribute to Grant McLennan, featuring The Orchids, Trembling Blue Stars, Luke Haines and others; we've posted about this before, but it's worth mentioning again.

This week I decided to create a celebratory mix in honour of me returning home from grad school. It's been a trying eight months with a crappy living situation and challenging courses, and I'm relieved to be home where I have friends and family. I'm also back with my CDs and records, which I missed (digital copies will never be the same as being able to look at liner notes and watching your collection expand on a shelving unit). I may still have a lot of hard work ahead of me with writing my Masters thesis, but knowing that I'll [...]

Sarah Nixey will forever live in my mind as the voice to one of the most dark, perverse, and undeniably pop bands of all time, Black Box Recorder. Her satin-smooth vocals were/are a key element to the band's no frills straight-forward electro-based glamourous sound. Sarah's now on her own, making her solo debut with Sing, Memory on ServiceAV . Sarah Nixey, "Strangelove" + Sarah Nixey + official + Myspace + more mp3s + buy Sing, [...]
While my Top Ten remained pretty solid, I finagled with the rest of the list right up to this posting. Lots and lots of good music this year, some of it was even great. Brits dominated the list this year...

Every now and then I have to repost something due to popular demand, if the original file has disappeared from wherever I stuck when I stuck it there, and half of tonight's post is exactly that; something a bunch of people have asked me for and that I think is great enough to be uploaded again. The track in question is the exclusive (and unheard before I posted it here) version of Pulp's This Is Hardcore called the Permanent Daylight mix, which was made by a guy called James from New York and that was rejected for inclusion [...]

Personally, I find any project that Luke Haines is involved with to be very memorable. His new solo album, Off My Rocker at the Art School Bop was released this week and I was filled with excitement, as it is his first EP in over three years. Though he has released several compilations (including Das Capital , which are orchestral versions of his own songs) with various forms of content, Off My Rocker at the Art School Bop marks his second actual solo album (excluding [...]

I don't what it is about Fall, but it seems that every time it comes around, a handful of very impressive singles are released. While always in preparation for the chaos of holiday album releases, it's fun to hear some new material from artists who have been silent for most of the year. Luke Haines is undoubtly one of my favorite musicians. Every project he has led, from The Auteurs to Black Box Recorder, has been absolutely brilliant. His solo releases have been interesting and engaging as well, to [...]
