Dear Paulina OK - a ridiculously long post so skip to the end if you're just here to leech a couple of Luna rarities! In Summer 1997 I had this half-baked idea to release a kind of Beatles Fan Club single only with Galaxie 500 rather than The Beatles. I had no idea, when I kicked off, just what I thought it might be like. So... I wrote (on paper with stamps and things) to Damon & Naomi just to test the ground. I got a lovely letter back from [...]

Well, hello there! Today is Independence day for the U.S.A. and it is a hot, steamy one down here in the Florida peninsula. Most folks are celebrating the day outside - having barbeques, drinking lots of beer, shooting off fireworks and enjoying the surf and sun. Regarding myself, I am just hanging out hiding behind the computer screen as usual. No real plans to do anything special. I may go out tonite to watch the fireworks over the intracostal waterway but not sure yet if I will. So, it's just another day for me to struggle and muddle through. [...]
I wrote a poem on a dog biscuit... but your dog refused to look at it. Have a nice day if it means something to you - have a bed in... but don't forget to invite somebody. I'll post the content winners this evening - so if you want to enter you still can - and there's a pretty good chance that you'd win something!! Galaxie 500 - original & best: Luna: Mp3: Dean & Britta - Fourth of July Mp3: [...]

Before you head off on the long 4th of July weekend of merriment and BBQs (mostly for my US readers, but heck, it's a good idea wherever you live), I have finally completed my annual summer mix for 2009: " Late Nights and Longboards "! I don't surf, I just pretend I'm one of those girls in the picture up there - with the especially foxy swimsuits. These are twenty tunes that will be soundtracking my summer, the porch swings and lemonade (okay, Fat Tire), the volleyball and sunburns, the roadtrips with the windows down because [...]
They say the best things in life are free, but you guys know how inflation is these days. $1 is pretty much the new "best things in life" price, and I'm not talking about McDonald's--stay away from that place.I'm talking about a snappy little pop group out of the UK called Fanfarlo. Until July 4th, their full-length debut is available on their website for one dollar, but that's not the best part:

We mentioned Fanfarlo as a Band To Watch previously and while the official release of their glorious album Reservoir is not due till September, they have a deal so sweet we believe you would not want to miss out on! Their album is goin for just $1.00 USD from now till July 4th on their website www.fanfarlo.com [...]
This past April, MOKB and The Laundromatinee teamed up with our great friends at LUNA Music to film as much of the happenings on RSD 2009 as we could. We photographed it all , but we just now pieced together all the footage. A great big thanks to all involved. It was a really fun day. " [Going to the record store] is like going to Grandma's house, it's awesome ." - MOKB friend, Adam G. [...]

Artist: Dean Wareham From: New York, NY Sound: Swirling, dreamy, cathartic pop, shoegaze 101 Similar Artists: The Feelies, Spacemen 3, Mazzy Star, Yo La Tengo, Read Now: "The next day we drove to Amherst College and played to a small but appreciative crowd, except for the two guys standing in front of me the whole time performing magic tricks for each other. Students are weird. Why don't they stay in their dorm rooms if they want to do magic tricks? Or do a magic show and [...]

Autumn de Wilde It's appropriate that I'm putting this up whilst in the Big Apple because more than any other band, Luna represents what I think of when I try to frame New York in musical terms - weird and wonderful and lightly hallucinogenic. And full of awesome guitar solos. One of Dean Wareham's first post-Luna projects was the writing of his memoirs, Black Postcards , which was released in hardcover form last year and in softcover last week. I reviewed it last [...]

The story of Terry Tolkin's record label, No. 6 Records, has been somewhat lost amidst the nostalgic hosannas for mid- to late-90s indie rock. A new compilation of No. 6's 7-inch output, titled Speed Dating [Teenbeat], will hopefully change all that. Speed Dating has the feel of a great lost mix tape. If you think about it, a 7-inch is basically a band's thesis statement. Speed Dating captures that headlong rush of great pop ideas —the fizz and pop— many times over. Stylistically restless but aesthetically consistent, [...]
We have a few copies of the Memoir of Dean Wareham's Black Postcards. Here is a quote from Amazon. "Dean Wareham's seminal bands Galaxie 500 and Luna have long been adored by a devoted cult following and extolled by rock critics. Now he brings us the blunt, heartbreaking, and wickedly charismatic account of his personal [...]

Photo by Frank Yang / Chromewaves Sean Eden is selling his black Fender Jazzmaster on eBay . The guitar was used extensively while he played with Luna and can be seen being used to great effect throughout Tell Me Do You Miss Me. I am the original owner, and for those of you out there who might be fans of the band Luna, this guitar was one of two Jazzmasters used by me on tour and in the studio since 1999, and features very prominently in the Rhino/Warner Bros. documentary [...]
There's something about odd couples I find strangely compelling, in a squinty-eyed, amateur anthropologist middle school girl type of way. And not necessarily peculiar physical pairings, though the metabolically challenged/beanpole, hottie/nottie combos are always worth a good gawk. What really gets my synapses firing is couples, friends and families with totally divergent approaches to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Strangely, these red/blue, church/state, Pabst/martini pairings often end up being as delightful for the participants as they are for the observers. That's why these borderline freakazoid new supergroup partnerships have me reeling, clapping, cackling and [...]
Having scanned the music on offer in the aftermath of March's SxSW Festival there's more than a little too much of a 'type' of music that's getting noticed. It's all a little Lo-Fi or Folky, as per two of the bands listed today. It's no doubt being hunted out on the back of the dominant success of last years Fleet Foxes at SxSW. At least these pretenders are packed to the brim with quality... FANFARLO This one will be easy. I couldn't put it any [...]
As we excitedly lead up to the UK's closest cousin of America's famous SxSW Festival, Brighton's GREAT ESCAPE FESTIVAL, with it's own mammoth jaunt in showcasing new music, we thought we would return to it here on The Recommender. THE GREAT ESCAPE FESTIVAL - PART TWO Having previously visited the line up at this years festival when we put together Part One (find it here ), we thought that we would construct Part Two . As we roll closer to the event the listings have [...]
