When I found out the Young & Lost Club girls, namely Nadia Dahlawi and Sara Jade, were a little younger than myself it really put how much they have done and how influential they are in the London music scene into some perspective for me. And now, celebrating their 50th single and 5 years as a label, they are releasing a double-disc compilation of 35 of their favourites. Their story is one of musical fairytale of sneaking out of boarding school to catch gigs around London, before starting a beautifully budget fanzine called Pyrrha,' [...]

On any number of his eight albums — especially his last three — Matt Pond PA comes off as warm and inviting, his trenchant observations on the human condition oozing with yearning, and wrapped in pastoral arrangements. Live, Pond — who's now based in NY and has said he might even be moving to CA — can be a bit inscrutable, like the guy you knew in college who was so talented and quick-minded that he was unapproachable, although he bared everything in his art. And in that way, his show Thursday night at the Troubadour [...]
I'm not sure that Lunar Youth are achieving anything new with this track, go back to the nineties and Hootie and Crash Test Dummies had all this covered. However, that doesn't make it a good track, it just makes it much harder for them to hit the mainstream. If you like this track head over to their Myspace and you can also get the b-side. MP3: Misfits - Lunar Youth

Whew... almost missed out on the first Friday Mixtape of 2010! See, it's been busy here between the hoidays, and my regular schedule has gone to the dogs whilst I'm on a short vacation with my family. Not to mention that SquirrelFood HQ is getting fresh paint, and so all my technology is unplugged, boxed and hiding beneath a drop cloth in the middle of a room, now colored "Wild Honey". Yep, sounds tasty doesn't it?. Anyway, I managed to dig out the lappy two thousand, and connect to somebody's network to upload this first volume of the year. I [...]
neon gold is one of our major blog-crushes (everything about their shtick is 100% spot on), and below you can check out their "sound of 20103 list, which has some major overlaps with the bbc sound of 2010 we posted a few days ago (we've * starred * the overlaps). all of these acts are definitely ones to keep your eyes peeled for - we're absolutely loving freelance whales, local natives, & lunar youth. catch the official list HERE . London's Lunar Youth has just recently released a new 73 single 'Misfits b/w Peppermint Lounge" and if you love 80s infused UK jams then this pretty much hits all of the nails on all of the heads here. The chorused guitars and electronic elements combine to take you back. They listed Roxy Music in their release and I think that is a pretty fair comparison probably. Deep vocals, driving flanged bass lines and spacy drums, all of the 80s hallmarks are here in spades, and it all comes together really well, so check it out. [...]

Today's selection from my mailbox / Een greep uit mijn mailbox : Dim the lights (mp3) - The Cloud I'm Under Dit klinkt als een mengeling van een speels muziekje en de soundtrack bij een oude horrorfilm, met die lage stem, het handgeklap, het gitaarintrootje en het orgeltje... The Cloud I'm Under [...]
