As per tradition (if something can be called a tradition if you've only done it once before...) here's my list of the top songs of 2010. Well, it's something of a misnomer, to be honest, as most of my favourite songs of the year have already featured in my Top 10 Albums post, so this is an opportunity to recognise the impressive efforts of those bands who weren't eligible for inclusion on that list. Some of these are good tracks from otherwise bad albums, others from records that only missed out by the skin of their teeth, and yet more [...]
Walking into Manchester's fantastic Night & Day Cafe , I was met with a packed out room that was bustling with excitement and anticipation. The Australian folk outfit Boy & Bear appear to have massed quite a large and enthused following since they were first seen supporting Laura Marling several months back. A bottle of finest Newcastle Brown in hand, and my colleague for the night Jonny Hudspith perched up to the bar with me, Andrew Davie took to the stage. Andrew Davie: [...]

After the initial announcement yesterday regarding our stage at this years Stag & Dagger, we can now confirm that TLOBF regular Cate Le Bon and impressive folk minstrel/jack of all trades Lupen Crook will be performing at The Spread Eagle alongside previously announced acts Sweet Baboo , Concil , and Bella Union's new signing Lone Wolf . Oh, and The Line Of Best Fit DJ(s) of course. A special shout out to our pals at Sonic Cathedral who will be hosting their night at The Legion just down [...]

Bishi + The Sliding Rule, Bardens Boudoir, Sunday 8th March By Yasmin Selena Butt Despite having the most shameful ladies toilet in a North London venue, Dalston's Barden's Boudoir still attracts exciting, up and coming performers down the steps and through it's door. The venue hosted a mixed evening as part of the London Word Festival. Mixed, as the middle act Lupen Crook due to London's uncooperative traffic was a no show, which left audiences witness to two main performers on the night, (after [...]

Uh-oh, I guess it's time to keep a bucket of cold water by the front door (how come no one really goes in for the whole "trick" side of trick-or-treating any more? Tis a darn shame...). So, while all the yuppies are boogying down to the strains of The Monster Mash and making out like they're yanks, and gangs of marauding hoodies go from door to door menacing old ladies for sweets, what is there for a discerning music fan to do? Well, fear not kids, the answer is here. Gaze on my works, [...]
"Jaan Pehechaan Ho" Ever since seeing the film Ghost World I've loved this song by Mohammed Rafi. The film opens with the main character dancing to "Jaan Pehechaan Ho" while we see the scene featuring this song from the 1965 Bollywood film Gumnaam , a film billed as 'India's first suspense thriller'. According to wikipedia the song's title, "Jaan Pehechaan Ho", is Hindi for 'we should get to know each other' . mohammed rafi jaan [...]

Channel 4's search for the best unsigned band visited the Devil's hometown of Liverpool with the six bands left in the competition playing at the Carling Academy. It's debatable whether the six bands truly represent the best unsigned bands in the UK but there are a couple of bands that have that undefinable stamp of true indie authenticity. Disappointingly one of those, the raucously energetic post punkers, The Gingerbread Men , fell by the wayside this week. Leaving the way clear for the only other [...]
