After Questlove gave us a sneak peak via Twitter yesterday, Okayplayer has revealed the official lineup of this year's Roots Picnic. Obviously, the Roots headline this event, but it seems like the Philadelphia summer festival continues to expand its horizon, bringing on artists for just about everyone. Seriously, they have everything from soul and rock to hip-hop and jazz, including Grimes , AraabMuzik , Robert Glasper , Gary Clark Jr and many more. One major oddball pick is Trinidad Jame$, who has continued to cause quite the stir within the online hip-hop community. [...]

Heems has had one hell of a year, y'all. Even though his former group, Das Racist , split up , his solo work has been beyond on-point. Additionally, he's helped establish Greedhead as a formidable lil' label. Today, he looks to Wild Water Kingdom standout "Soup Boys (Pretty Drones)" and complements the Lushlife-produced banger with some sharp new visuals. They center on his recent travels overseas, much of which has been spent performing, and his fondness for burgers. Watch it below.

We've already given a round down of our favorite artwork and music videos of 2012, and now we're diving into our choices for the best songs of the past year. To be blunt, we loved a lot of singles in the past 12 months from across the genresphere, though hip-hop and its off-shoots remain the backbone of our selections. For example, Baauer 's "Harlem Shake" most certainly isn't rap music, but the genre's influence breathes through the floor-shaking bass and synthesizers. As such, we didn't want to throw all 100 songs at [...]

We can all agree (I hope) that the old "can't judge a book by its cover" adage applies just as easily to albums. From Magical Mystery Tour to Rumours, The Talking Heads to The Smashing Pumpkins, and even this year's standout Cat Power LP Sun, there's a rich history of great music hiding behind heinous ... Even though MTV doesn't really play them anymore, music videos have had a strong resurgence these past few years thanks primarily to services like YouTube and Vimeo. In addition to monetizing their visual content, artists have been able to reach and therefore gain more fans through a medium thought to have killed the radio star. It has also led to some huge leaps in technology as seen in Chairlift's incredible video for "Met Before". Director Jordan Fish and his team essentially allowed the viewer to choose their own adventure (remember those books?) and create a new experience each time [...]

Underground Arts presents a dope but somewhat oddly-matched showcase tonight with local emcee/producer Lushlife opening up the festivities. With an appreciation and ear whose net captures a wide range of musicology, Lushlife creates intricate, multi-faceted beats from his compact, road-ready stage setup. Smoothly incorporating a free-and-easy rhyming style over an ever-evolving, textured musical canvas, Lush has an old-school classic emcee delivery with a new-age, all-hands-on-deck sonic sensibility that easily demonstrates why he has received so much press this past year. He will be supporting Brooklyn art-punk duo Japanther, while west coast hip-hop veterans The Coup headline this evening's [...]
XPN Welcomes emerging indie three-piece Guards to Kung Fu Necktie tonight. The New York project is spearheaded by Richie James Follin, frontman for Willowz and a former live guitarist for Cults (which his sister Madeline sings for). The group’s doom-meets-power pop vibe makes their seven-track EP an unexpected dance party staple, which you can pick ... Continue reading
