I gotta say, this past weekend has rocked my head pretty good, plus I may have adapted an intolerance to lactose or gluten (stomach has been killin me since Wednesday). Thankfully I got the hook up via DeadJournalist in the form of this track by Lushlife. A perfect example of the new synth-infused, cognitvely clever, flow-strong, electronic indie hip-hop; Producer/Lyricist Lushlife weaves a nasty rap thread with "She's a Buddhist, I'm a Cubist" (not to mention a dope title). These two tracks are certainly not club bangers, but perfect examples of stimulating, passionate hip-hop. Side note: Lushlife's new [...]

Lushlife In advance of his album, Plateau Vision , coming out in April, Lushlife has released "She's a Buddhist, I'm a Cubist" which can be downloaded in this post. Lushlife - "She's a Buddhist, I'm a Cubist" Recorded in Philadelphia, the album featuring Heems of Das Racist, Styles P of The LOX and more.

Rapper and producer Lushlife (Raj Haldar) released one of our favorite albums/mixtapes last year, No More Golden Days . The breadth of musical influences and samples on the mixtape is staggering. With help from Heems and appearances from Dice Raw and Tim Meskers (of Brown Recluse), Haldar drops lyrical references to Jesus And Mary Chain, Maxi Priest, and Ice Cube while spinning out excellent samples from Clams Casino, Gerry And The Pacemakers, and Fleet Foxes. Lushlife has just announced that he's signed with Western Vinyl to release his new album, Plateau Vision . It will come out [...]
In 2011, the Philly local music scene showcased new heights of creativity and vibrancy. Here's five of some of my favorite Philly things from this year. For a more in depth look at my take on Philly 2011 go here . 1 - The Roots, undun (Def Jam) 2 - The War On Drugs , Slave Ambient (Secretly Canadian) Listen to a solo acoustic Key Studio Session from Adam Granduciel of The War On Drugs here . 3 - Work [...]

If there's one thing I can say about 2011 and music, it would have to be that this was the year I got into -- or rather fell in love with -- hip hop. Yes, it was always there, but it was never something I really bothered to check into. Of the many albums/mixtapes I had the chance to check out this year, Philly rapper Lushlife's No More Golden Days mixtape was a highlight for me. Sharing this release with you all is just a bit overdue. Aside from the great guest [...]

There's a couple young rappers coming up that sound a lot like Ghostface, and it's great to hear young rappers expanding on the energetic, slang-heavy slurred rap style. But where Ghostface sticks closely to the 902s hip-hop formula of rapping over classic sweet soul ballads, Philly rapper/producer Lushlife brings the same fierce rap style to electronic and abstract beats. The new mixtape is all over the map, featuring indie rap favorite Heems from Das Racist, 802s style synth beats, and and even a Lil B beat jack (Motivation, produced by Clams Casino). It's tough to pick [...]

Jay-Z, Kanye, Drake Of all the lists that this website produces over the course of the next few weeks, I expect to receive the most angry and confused comments about this one. As I see it, 2011 is the year that mainstream hip-hop let us down. High profile releases from the likes of Lil' Wayne, Lupe Fiasco, The Game, and Pusha T (to name only a few) left me wishing I still bought CDs so I could use them as coasters. Meanwhile, as month after month of flaccid rhymes and bombastic beats hit record store shelves, [...]

It is no secret that, like sports, fashion, and fruit, the arts are seasonal. The music release schedule in particular tends to follow such a pattern, with major releases appearing in spring (just in time for wallets to recover from the holiday season), disappearing in summer (when money is more likely to be spent on concerts), and reappearing in autumn (with just enough time to gain buzz before people start buying gifts). As a result, September and October tend to overflow with great new records, and this year was no exception. We at FP spent the month reviewing everything from [...]

Today's #SampleSunday track is brought to you by Lushlife featuring Jabee and STS in Glistening . The trio sampled the classic Isley Brothers cut Love Put Me On The Corner . They reminisce on their up bringing, fond memories, and where they are today over a classic melody. Enjoy! Check out Glistening below: The original track: Love On The Corner : Be sure to follow Jabee , Lushlife [...]

Brown Recluse may describe themselves as "psychedelic/baroque pop," but what I hear, especially on their record, Panoptic Mirror Maze , is a spiraling funnel of vintage easy listening, Monkees-meet-Brian Wilson coastal radio pop, loose lo-fi lounge, organ rock, and 8-bit experiments. I know--that's super specific. But in order to understand the greatness of one of Philly's best kept secrets, you have to understand the textures and layers that define their sound. The band's ironic richness will be mixed in at Johnny Brenda's tonight with the one-man alt-hop innovator, Lushlife , who twists and melds beautiful old world [...]
This wasn't an easy day to pick Mixtape Of The Week. Most weeks, Waka Flocka Flame's ridiculously fun, satisfying Lebron Flocka James 3 would've been a lock for that particular distinction; I may still name it next week's Mixtape Of The Week if nothing else comes along in the meantime. By the same token, Philly standby Freeway dropped the rock-solid The Intermission , which featured the heartwarming State Property reunion track " 666 ," just yesterday. But the tape I've enjoyed most this week is one that could've easily [...]
Sharper-than-sharp Philadelphia rapper Lushlife really has something for everyone. And that's especially true on his insta-download new mixtape, No More Golden Days . Across its 17 tracks, he raps over tracks from Gang Gang Dance and Clams Casino , reworks a tune from Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark , and is joined by some of our favorite MCs here at Potholes. Guests include Das Racist's Heems , STS , Cities Aviv, QuEST , and Dice Raw . Hit the skip to stream and download the tape. [...]

"Nutsack symphonies" and soulful sounds defined Friday night at Union Transfer as Icebird , the new project from rjd2 and Aaron Livingston , celebrated its release of The Abandoned Lullaby right before rjd2 returned to the moveable stage to woo the crowd with his intergalactic garb and a hammer bearing Mario hand puppet. Lushlife opened the night with a dose of electro-hop, which contained raw beats over electrical sounds, rather than sampled bass-y thumps. Icebird unveiled to the masses a funky, groovy vibe transmitting much emotion via Aaron Livingston's facial expressions which [...]

Lushlife - Still I Hear The World Progress (Feat. RYAT) (Sun-Glitters-Remix)

Lushlife (a.k.a. Raj Haldar) has a new mixtape coming out on October 25 called No More Golden Days that will feature contributions from Das Racist's Heems, Brown Recluse 's Tim Meskers, RYAT , STS , and many others. Below is a remix of Lushlife's track "Still I Hear The World Progress" (which is off his upcoming mixtape and features the lovely croon and swoon of RYAT) done by Luxemburg's Sun Glitters (the moniker of Victor Ferreira).
