Luther Russell & Sarabeth Tucek in Liverpool September 2011. We've swooned, been moved and waxed lyrical with regard to Sarabeth Tucek and her beautiful album 'Get Well Soon' a number of times on this here blog. In fact such has been our admiration for her work that we may soon have to invent new superlatives in order to attempt to aptly convey the high esteem in which we hold her in. Given the aforementioned two sentences you can doubtless appreciate the giddy rush of excitement we experienced when news reached us of [...]

Greetings from Laurel Canyon! "In the company of players" is an expression I learned from watching the 1998 flick, Shakespeare in Love. The expression refers to being part of the Lord Chamberlain's Men, a company of actors who performed at The Globe theatre at the turn of the 16th Century. In the flick Gwyneth Paltrow plays a dreamy Viola De Lesseps who longs to be part of the "band." Truth is I always related to the De Lesseps character. From the moment I knew what a rock band was, I only longed [...]

TVD and the Idelic Hour, our own Friday podcast, are thrilled to be hosting the record release party for our friend, the multi-talented Luther Russell tomorrow night (8/27) at the Three of Clubs. Luther Russell's The Invisible Audience is a wildly ambitious record which he calls "a glimpse into the jukebox of my psyche." The twenty-five tracks on this epic record were culled from months and months of recording "whenever I could get into my eight-track studio or on a four-track cassette to get an idea down." [...]

Greetings from Laurel Canyon! For some weeks now, us "Angelinos" have been media blitz'd from all angles: electronic freeway signs, newspapers, local TV adds, Tweets, even a great Youtube clip of a re-subtitled Anthony Hopkins as none other that Adolf Hitler! The daunting message? Today's midnight closing of the 405 Freeway—which has become known as "Carmageddon." A summer Friday on the North/South bound "4053 would be the West Coast's equivalent of New York's L.I.E. Thus, diverting a huge five lane, bumper to bumper traffic jam into the streets of [...]

Luther Russell - Aint Frightening Me Luther Russell released his fifth LP, a double-length entitled The Invisible Audience , on July 12th on Ungawa Records. He says the double album is "a glimpse into the jukebox of my psyche." Check out the first cut from the album ( which is streaming on AOL Spinner ) 'Ain't Frightening Me,' a timeless sounding mish mash written track, that's a bit Beatlesesque(hate using that term but I hear it in this song) and one that I find myself continually replaying again and again. Check out the album streaming now, [...]

Somewhere in the vicinity of Elvis Costello, Nick Drake, and Elliott Smith, one might find Luther Russell. He makes some nice work on his new double LP, The Invisible Audience , out and available now. "Ain't Frightening Me" http://lutherrussell.com/ http://www.facebook.com/luther russell

Luther Russell "The Invisible Audience" Luther Russell (previously with Freewheelers) has always been a very eclectic folk rocker, with equal parts of McCartney, Dylan and Joe Cocker as guidelines. Adept at several genres, Russell's latest is a double LP (25 tracks) with something for everyone. The lush instrumental opener "Still Life Radio" lulls the listener, and then "Sidekick Reverb" kicks in with it's shambling guitar rhythm and handclap beats. "A World Unknown" is a hypnotic blues beat machine similar to Beck's early hits. After several folk oriented tracks, the pop emerges [...]

Luther Russell has been making good music for about 20 years, but he likely still remains in relative obscurity. Russell put out a couple records as the frontman for the band The Freewheelers before taking things solo for the next 13 or so years. He has quietly made more of a name for himself on the production side of music, working with a wide array of artists , including Noah & The Whale, Laura Marling, Sarabeth Tucek, Holly Miranda, Richmond Fontaine, Sean Lennon and Fernando, and more. Still interested in giving it a go [...]

If you've visited this blog before you'll no doubt be aware of our love for Sarabeth Tucek and we have certainly not hid our admiration for her stunning sophomore album ' Get Well Soon. ' She certainly didn't disappoint in the live setting playing a short but achingly beautiful set in Manchester as part of her UK tour (on this occasion supporting energetic folk pop collective The Leisure Society .) This was the first time I'd visited Manchester's ' Band On The Wall' venue run by the not for profit charity Inner City Music and it [...]

This is one of those standard music blogger confessions. The " I've been meaning to post this for ages, but somehow never got round to it ". The injured party on this occasion is the marvellous Luther Russell and his Motorbike EP , which saw the light of day back in February. At the time we were hugely taken with the songs on the EP (which are taken from Russell's upcoming fifth solo album – a double entitled The Invisible Audience ) Musically the EP takes in the psychedelic Americana [...]

I'm dubious anytime an artist pimps their new release as sounding like Big Star's Third/Sister Lovers or the Bryd's Sweetheart of the Rodeo . Comparing yourself to such firmly-entrenched classics makes listening to the actual song rather underwhelming when it's not "Kangaroo" or "You're Still on My Mind." But in the case of Los Angeles-based songwriter Luther Russell, those classics aren't too far of base when talking about his new 10-inch record—which he is releasing tonight at Dante's. Russell has been around a while, releasing albums since 1991 and living in Portland until the early aughts. The [...]
Luther Russell has been releasing great records since 1991. At least that is what I've heard. Truthfully, until recently I'd never heard of him, but now that I have I can't imagine how he flew under my radar before. Based on the material I've now heard, Russell is a mature, thoughtful and skilled musician whittling out trembling, furious stripped down rock n' roll. But lets be honest, that is what inspires me (and others) to obsess over music - the knowledge that there is always some phenomenal music hovering out there that just hasn't [...]
If you're not familiar with L.A.-native Luther Russell's music, then you probably haven't been paying close enough attention. I know I wasn't. Not only has he been making his own music—in the early '90s with the Freewheelers and on his own since '97—but his producer credits include a couple of records by Portland-based outfit Richmond Fontaine, [...]

During a time of great melancholy or distress, many individuals find themselves at a surprisingly high artistic peak, purely triggered by a rush of emotion or shock. As unfortunate as the event may be, perilous situations are often equatable to artistic success in the case of several artists. Looking back on romanticist painters and composers, it is doubtful that one will discover many influential artists who had a smooth journey through life. As ironic as it may sound, elements of depression can sometimes lead to unsurmountable success. Luther Russell displayed the maturity to turn one of the most [...]
