by Tiana Feng The Luyas released Animator in October. Here's a video for the opening track Montuno .
The Luyas - Fifty Fifty Hallelujah, hello Luyas, I see you have a new album. It is cold and snowy and warm and brittle and wet and gentle and sweet and breathless and all the things good good music should be. It’s not the same as your last record. It has new sounds, and new noises, and it has a way of turning its neck when it looks at you like older music, wiser, less easily amused. There is just the right amount of fucking around. There are beautiful parts where Jessie’s voice careens around [...]

Today I had to guest fill in for Hop the Fence on CHUO FM 89.1FM . In today's show, I had two bands that were playing a show in Ottawa tonight. I had my first my phone interview with Tusks . I had The Strumbellas come into the studio. Let's say the interview with The Strumbellas was pretty crazy! Here is the playlist [...]

The Luyas: Animator - The Luyas ' most recent release Animator is a wriggling, crawling life form, molting and mending and morphing right before your eyes. Tapping into the strength of their previous musical ventures ( Too Beautiful to Work , 2011 and Faker Death , 2007), The Luyas have truly marked their own niche. It is a strangely past, present, and future sound lovingly braiding warm horns with silky strings, mellow zither, and cool keyboard all together. Each track flows with a gentle nature, [...]

…breaks just like a little girl… Conduits: Conduits Too new to be known? Hopefully not for now. The debut album from Omaha’s Conduits is a revelation of pop music. Intense and dark, it’s dense with spellbinding music. There are layers upon layers in here, wailing guitar drone, deep low end and dreamy female vocals. The songs are great throughout, sometimes foreboding, sometimes hypnotic: enough groove to keep it moving, enough freak-outs to keep it interesting. Spotify : Conduits – Conduits [...]

We missed these recently. You shouldn't! First up are three tracks from Castle Face's new re-imagining of the Velvet Underground & Nico album to celebrate 45 years since that seminal release. It features previous MM alumni The Fresh & Onlys, Burnt Ones , and Thee Oh Sees amongst others - and is limited to just 1,000 copies, on banana yellow vinyl with original art by another MM fave David Shrigley - it is a pretty neat package. Download Ty Segall's maniacal take on Femme Fatale and listen to White Fence [...]

Montreal's The Luyas in my opinion is a small band with a big innovative sound. With the vocals of Jessie Stein, keyboard/Wurlitzer Mathieu Charboneau, French Horn player Pietro Amato, violinist Sarah Neufeld and drummer Bucky Wheaton. This is what they did on their third album "Animator" out on Dead Oceans and Paper Bag Records . While I find the album cover reminding me of Smashing Pumpkins circa Mellon Collie/Adore era. Actually it's a photo of the late 19th century modern dancer and icon of the Art Nouveau movement, Loïe Fuller. It [...]
If you’ve seen The Luyas live in the past few years, it's likely you'd remember it. The Montreal-based band has taken high-profile opportunities with The Antlers and Blonde Redhead and captivated audiences, both through melodies with bend-but-don't-break pop sensibilities and instrumentation that would have most rock critics using their iPhone to figure out what they were witnessing (frontwoman Jessie Stein plays a stringed instrument called a Moodswinger ). But, this band that displays so much joy on stage is not the same one we encounter on their third full-length, Animator , for better and for worse. [...]

For the first time in years, Canadian music feel important again. Obviously pop mavens like Bieber and Carly Rae Jepsen move units and the figureheads of Montreal winning a Grammy give us stable footing in International eyes, but Canada (and music fans around the world) are rallying behind the most obscure and innovative bands we are putting out. It's rare that a noisy, reckless band that thrives on volume is so well received, but when Metz ended up in the pages of the New York Times, it seemed like a big deal. In a fair [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive CMJ, Spinner The CMJ Music Festival is back! Every year, hundreds of bands descend upon New York City for five days of nonstop, explosive rock, rap and fun. This year's highlights include indie-pop supergroup JJAMZ , the beefy rhymes of Killer Mike and the dark n' dreamy noise of Dum Dum Girls . So why not celebrate this joyous [...]
We all know we're going to die. Anyone who denies the fact is living in a fantasy world, or the Sea Org . The problem is we never know when it's going to happen, and it's this lack of information that leads us to spend the majority of our days not contemplating or anticipating our imminent death (terminal illnesses not withstanding). It's also why when news that someone close to us has died arrives, we're knocked for a loop that can induce a lot of introspection and soul searching. For The Luyas, news that a close friend [...]
A female lead singer that also plays something called a moodswinger. Seriously, it's a real instrument. Look it up. Dead Oceans, 2012 6.0 / 10.0 The Luyas have released their third and most adventurous album to date. Animator's opening track, "Montuno" winds through a jungle of expanding orchestration before [...]
