All I know about Indiana is that it's David Letterman's homestate and its residents are known as Hoosiers . I've no idea what the word means and hoped Bill Bryson's wonderful book Made in America would have the answer. To no avail. All I learnt about Indiana from Bryson is that the state passed a law in 1905, which reads in part: "Whoever entices, allures, instigates or aids any person under the age of twenty-one years to commit masturbation or self-pollution, shall be deemed guilty of sodomy". You learn something [...]

Austin public radio station KUT has announced that it's determined the best songs about Texas, as voted by its listeners. Asleep At The Wheel leader Ray Benson openly campaigned for votes on his MySpace page, so it figures that the group would be No. 1. Here's the list: "Miles And Miles Of Texas" by Asleep At The Wheel "New San Antonio Rose" by Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys "Waltz Across Texas" by Ernest Tubb "Deep [...]
The grammar police will be on your back if you use a double negative, there ain't no doubt. But from my brief days a linguistics major, I learned that "grammatically incorrect" language like this, when used widely enough, takes over. It's how language evolves. So "whom" Nazis, give it up. The double negative is a unique "mistake" though, as it seems socioeconomically based, and racially some too. So I can't tell you whether it will ever become an "acceptable" for of speech. What I do know though, is a lot of great tunes [...]

I would love to have time for three more posts this week, but I don’t. Each of these songs and their albums are worthy of a full post of their own. But I certainly didn’t want to leave any of them out. Kate Bush : The Sensual World [ purchase ] Mmmmm... yes! I have mentioned elsewhere that Kate Bush’s work with Peter Gabriel inspired her to become more creative, freeing her to incorporate various elements that she had never before considered into [...]
John Hiatt and Lyle Lovett , two of the most accomplished singer-songwriters of the last three decades, took the stage at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Music Hall Thursday night for an evening of trading songs, stories, and jokes. It was a remarkably low-key affair. No sets or elaborate backdrops. Just a couple of spotlights, two acoustic guitars, and a pair of old friends delivering a night of stellar songs and indelible performances. An old-fashioned guitar-picking session is not the norm for either artist. Lovett has spent the bulk of recent years playing with [...]
For a tall Texan with a worn face and a crooked smile, Lyle Lovett is not the man of few words that one might expect him to be. Taking the stage at the Carnegie Music Hall last night with his good friend, John Hiatt, Lovett was the first to speak, starting off slow with a simple “Howdy.” Hiatt jumped at the opportunity to play to the crowd early, and one-upped Lovett with a salutation more familiar around these parts: “How yinz do'n?” Of course, the audience approved. With that, Hiatt kicked the night off with “Perfectly Good Guitar,” [...]
Photo: Rollin Riggs, NYT For most of my life, I hated country music. I owned a Johnny Cash greatest hits collection I’d picked up at a truckstop back in high school, but beyond that I knew nothing of the genre except for the polished, twangy crap I’d encounter on the upper ends of the FM dial, and that never did it for me, and still doesn’t. Eventually I got turned on to Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn, and some other classics, but even those I saw as something separate from "Country" as I perceived it. [...]
Lyle Lovett and his It's Not Big, It's Large big band (confusing huh?) will be playing th Olympia Theatre this year on his current world tour. The gig will take place on March 31st, with tickets costing €44.50. Tickets go on sale Friday the 16th of January, but I doubt they'll sell out. This remains his greatest ever song:

I listened to this album a lot when it came out even though I knew I was too young to relate to most of what he was saying. Now that I'm older, I can't say it makes the album better, but it does make it hurt a little more. Lyle Lovett - I Know You Know from Lyle Lovett And His Large Band http://www.lylelovett.com

There's exactly two weeks left until Election Day. For your pleasure, a pre-election playlist to pump you up for pulling the lever. And, in the spirit of the upcoming political throwdown, JamsBio is holding its own musical election. Vote now! October is also the birth month of Bluesman Kevin More, aka Keb Mo'. Was born on October 3, 1951 in South Central Los Angeles, California. He is a blues singer, guitarist, and songwriter. I have loved his music since he came on the scene, and thought that I would do a quick search for good quality mp3s out there to celebrate his birthday. Of all the personal heroes and celebrities I've met in my lifetime, the one that inevitably really impresses everyone (whether their a fan of his or not) is Lyle Lovett. And while I've always enjoyed meeting and talking to people who's music I've admired for a long time -- none of that "Don't meet your heroes" stuff has ever proven true for me, but then again, I might never actively pursue a meeting with certain people because of that rule -- no one's ever shocked me more than Lyle. The guy is the most gracious, humble [...]

I want to write more for this blog, I really do. Like right now, I have a number of good articles in mind ("What makes a good lyricist?," a write-up on the new Okkervil River record leak, baroque pop profiles, etc) but I'm just so very tired. But I do want to write something, so for tonight, I'm taking the lazy way out and doing a "Shuffle Post." Herein shall we enter the weird and wild world of my iTunes library for ten songs, yet unknown to you or I. And for each, I shall mention something about it worth [...]

Lyle Lovett & his Large Band graced the stage at Overture Hall after spending a day circling (sometimes in the wrong direction) the Capital at Art Fair On The Square . It had been a number of years since I last saw Lovett perform, this being my first time in the presence of his Large Band. I was completely floored when the lights came up after the band warmed up the stage to see in excess of twenty people. Large numbers certainly equal large sound and over the course of the evening Lovett [...]

Over the past week I've been on a steady diet of Lyle Lovett who comes to town with his Large Band on Sunday, July 13th , for an intimate performance at Overture Hall . I've got my favorites from Lyle's catalog: The Road to Ensenada , Step Inside This House , and It's Not Big It's Large have all contributed to laying my fan foundation. If you're on the fence, please pay your [...]
