Just a few years ago there was a spate of British rock bands that seemed to be the direct descendants of that rumbling brand of 70s/80s alternative rock music that was spearheaded by Echo & The Bunnymen , The Jesus & Mary Chain and Joy Division . This new batch of re-visits had a variety of successes, with bands such as Chapel Club and The Horrors signing to Loog Records , (an imprint of the major Universal label), but then there was a plethora of others who's success hasn't been [...]

Lyrebirds - Now I Know Why (Savile's Use It Mix) Chicago's Gianpaolo Dieli continues to refine his sound with each passing production. His recent 'Nothing But The Sky' single, made available for free download two months back, had us all ringing about it's spacial textures and progressively built structure, of which contained his own murmured vocals. Now Dieli has given us his latest piece to give away to our lovely readership. Although you won't find the slightest hint of techno in the Lyrebird original, Dieli has your 4/4 fix adorned with weaving remnants of the original's up beat [...]
Just got the sad word that Brighton's very own Lyrebirds are calling it a day. Having seen them play multiple times, I feel compelled to say how sad I am. They were the one Brighton band I got to see around and one of the only ones who played frequently. I truly loved their Catalyst [...]

Blogophilia 24 is the second "theme-based" mix in the Blogophilia series. You may or may not know that Blogophilia mixes are created by mixing songs posted to this blog and others to form a mix of songs that were recently released. The only other theme-based mix (Blogophilia 2) deviated from these basic rules by including songs that had American states, cities or places of significance in the title without attention to release date. The general rules for this mix were to: 1) Find enough songs in 24 hours via music blogs and related sites to form a [...]

The Lyrebirds have enjoyed something of an impetuous 12 months. Initial tours with the likes of The Maccabees and The Big Pink yielded an array of admirers, one of which happened to be lauded producer Stephen Street, preeminent for his work with The Smiths and Blur. So much so did the band endear themselves to Street, he set about engineering their debut single 'Closer' and follow-up 'Catalyst'. Possessing an indisputable immediacy, the tracks enjoyed airplay on some recognised new music stations. Yet, the Brighton-based band's truly surreal moment came when asked to play on the same bill as [...]

Words: Gareth O'Malley Those people that said imitation was the lowest form of flattery were absolutely spot-on. It's not particularly acceptible in music, but there are bands who can tip the hat to their influences in a masterful fashion whilst not being in thrall to them. Lyrebirds are one such band. The composite parts of their sound are rather easy to figure out. Oh hey! Singer with a deep voice! Cue Interpol / Editors / Joy Division comparison. They have stadium-sized ambitions too! I'm going to stop now, because, to be [...]

I clapped my hands together rather gleefully when I first stumbled upon LYREBIRDS last week. The Brighton band proved an instant hit with me and I knew straight away that I had no choice but to share them with TGTF readers. So here I tap upon my keyboard enthusiastically, mighty excited to tell you of one of my favourite discoveries of the year so far. It would appear guitar gloom is the way forward this 2010, with the likes of TAPETHERADIO and Chapel Club (who LYREBIRDS recently supported) all embracing those stormy, [...]

Predictions of who will make it big are always liable to provide a journalist with more egg on face than Humpty Dumpty's renologist. The history of music is littered with band's who were destined for greatness and disappeared without leaving so much as a smudge on the window of the music world. It's even harder for bloggers like the Devil because, by our very nature, we deal in the obscure and the uncommercial. However I'm going to stick my neck out and predict that during the next twelve months at least one of the bands featured over the next two [...]

I was looking for a strong song to head into the weekend with and I do believe I've found it with the Lyrebirds . It's clearly got an Interpol feel to it, but I'm always one to be fine with the familiar if it's done well and those chord changes in the intro are a textbook example of such. Enjoy, and everyone have an adventuresome weekend! MP3: Lyrebirds - This Is The Way

hot off the heels from tour support for The Maccabees , the Brighton UK 5 piece, Lyrebirds, keep momentum with their new single "Closer". and for those who may label them as yet another baritone voice indie-rock thing , Lyrebirds have this track to offer. if the John Wayne'esque "EEEASY" in the verse doesn't seal things for ya, we're not sure what will. Got a couple of Brighton-flavoured talents on show for you today. Big things are very much anticipated as the local buzz is building like an Ann Summers store with a Duracell salesman in it... THE AGITATOR We are a little over excited here at The Recommender, so we better make sure we don't bubble over on this one. Here is a genuinely exciting two piece band, with one instrument between them - drums! However, banging said instrument is the ex- Maccabees [...]

It seems that we've not done a Gig List for a while. August is a slightly weaker period for live music in Brighton, (with a handful of lucky exceptions), as venues await the return of students in September and October, so here are a couple of highlights as Autumn's flood gates open.
