Founded in 1979, Lyres not only spearheaded the 1960s garage rock revival of the following decade, but the Boston, Massachusetts combo also remained kingpins of the scene. Still active to this day, the band changes musicians faster than a baby changes diapers. But lead singer and organist Jeff Conolly has always been the ringleader of Lyres. Here on the reissue [...]

Reissues are always have a special place in our hearts and it seems that each year more and more labels are digging into the vaults to find classics that needed to be unearthed or gems that simply needed the vinyl touch again. Some labels go well beyond the call of duty (Numero, RVNG we're looking in your direction) and really get the packaging in a state that's equal to the music contained between the sleeves and that will always bump you to the top of our list. Check out the full list after the jump below for our favorite releases [...]

Lyres - Lyres Lyres In the wake of several garage revivals and tangents of late it seems odd that it took this long for someone to round up a proper reissue of Lyres' first two albums. Kind of like The Fall of American garage rock, the band was birthed out of the demise of DMZ and its leader Jeff "Monoman" Connelly cycled three dozen or so members through its ranks over the band's lifetime. Their first is a raw nerve of garage that owes much to The Kinks' early days, The [...]

It seems like it was only yesterday that I picked up a promo CD with the words 'Tear Them Down' written across it. I popped this mystery disc into the CD player at the radio station I used to work at, and low and behold, I enjoyed it. The man behind the mask was David's Lyre (Paul Dixon), and the mask was literal in this case, as every photo I could find had him wearing a lone ranger mask, as if he were a secret member of The Incredibles family. But out of this time vortex, where what [...]

This cheeky little remix slipped right past us when it was uploaded 10 or so months ago but the success of the 2 Bears alongside the release of the debut David's Lyre album this week couldn't have come at a better time. 8 minutes of greatness.
DMZ - "Guilty Child" MP3/download We plumb the mines of late '70s/early '80s music because we yearn for the unmitigated passion of the day, as the kidz of today, while absolutely BURSTing with talent, don't quite have the ZAP-ZOOM-BUMP-ZIP-SMAAAAAASH of ... Continue reading

All skittish keys and flickery vocals, David's Lyre 's new offerings suit perfectly my current favourite activity: shivering. As I rub my hands and mutter terrible curses while waiting for trains, buses, bosses and dates, so Paul Dixon's chamber-pop-rock songs embark on hesitant ascents, wide-eyed pronouncements, maudlin string-downers and sudden, spirited riffs. They feel battered and bruised by the cruelties of life, but still bursting with pluck, wonder, and a fistful of magic dust. The tunes are those expected to form the bulk of a debut album, Picture Of Our Youth , which [...]

We've become good friends with David's Lyre since he featured on a session in the early stages of our channel and again at the Great Escape festival in Brighton as well as loads of editorial posts on the blog containing his unique blend of modern folky music that we've grown so fond of. His album, Picture of our Youth, is due out at the end of this month and so, on an extremely (!!!) cold day on Hampstead Heath in London, we decided to meet up for a pre-album session... 'This Time' is track 2 on [...]

It's a shame when things don't go to plan, and perhaps equally upsetting is just how often that's the case, what with Burns night last week "the best-laid schemes o' mice an 'men gang aft agley" springs to mind... The plan on this occasion revolves around a certain David's Lyre, a band for who we've been predicting big things for quite a while, from being intrigued by their mysteriousness to including them in our Songs Of 2010 it's safe to say we were rooting for them. Given that they were essentially signed to Mercury Records, albeit via Hideout [...]
Due to conflicts with him and his record label, Paul Dixon, better known as David's Lyre has decided to go independent and will be releasing his album "Picture Of Our Youth" unsigned. Feeling that his former record label was preventing him from sharing music that his fans could be proud of, Dixon has chosen to release his latest record via bandcamp on a pay-what-you-want basis. Joining an ever-growing number of artists who have started to self-release their work, Dixon embodies the current sentiment that one doesn't need a big record label to share their music, attract fans, or gain notoriety. In preparation for the [...]
Zammuto - "Too Late to Topologize" MP3/download The Books are no more - which is OK; Lost and Safe wasn't good, and this new material seems fresh - and the indie legions are asking WHY? WHY? WHYYYYYYYYY? It doesn't matter. ... Continue reading

David's Lyre continues to roll forward with new track "English Roses". "English Roses" balances very well great pop hooks with a bit less pop, spacier instrumental arrangement (Think 00's British guitar music). David's Lyre - Roses David's Lyre ( Facebook ) Rating 8.1

The Lyres feat. Wally Tax : Touch [ purchase original version ] Jeff 'Monoman' Conolly was a huge fan of so-called nederbiet , mid-sixties pop from Holland, and of wild Amsterdam cultband the Outsiders in particular. So when he was invited to play a session for VPRO radio in 1987 with his garage band the Lyres and was informed that übercool former Outsiders frontman Wally Tax would drop by as well, Conolly [...]

We featured the first Advent special presented by David's Lyre last year which saw the artist embark on a festive mission to release a new song every day in the run up to Christmas. It's a mammoth task but he did it marvellously (you can listen to some of the covers here ) and the new Advent started yesterday however this time he's teamed up with students at Central Saint Martin's to create high quality short films alongside more great covers and originals. First in the covering chair is Lana Del Rey with a video [...]

Mp3: David's Lyre - Hidden Ground Mp3: David's Lyre - Hidden Ground (D/R/U/G/S Remix)

The '70s garage rock of DMZ and Lyres won't scratch any new itches, but there's heart to these songs and plenty of solid rock and roll on this generous release. Jeff Conolly was a fiery part of the Boston garage rock scene in the late '70s. He first fronted DMZ, a thrashing rock band that distinguished itself with a bluesy undercurrent and a punk edge. When that band fell apart in 1978, he formed Lyres, an equally charging band that shifted the focus from crunching guitars to bleating organs. Both sides of Conolly's musical world are represented here. We [...]

A warm dark place is at the heart of David's Lyre . Building upon a stellar voice and accentuated with a smattering of industrial sounds and effects is a beautiful piece of dark pop. David Lyre - Hidden Ground Website
