So just started listening to M Shanghai String Band - and despite the name, I am not sure if they have any real Asian influences, but I can say that they are definitely a string band. They are described as an alternative bluegrass band and I have to say they might need a bit of acoustic and honky tonk to round out that synopsis! A little backstory of this project: The M SHANGHAI STRING BAND of Brooklyn, New York, started in 2002 as a monthly show in the basement of a local Chinese restaurant, the M [...]

And I was worried I had nothing more to say about 2007... 1. Kala , M.I.A. This past summer, the population burp that came of age in the late 60s reinforced its version of that cultural moment and its historic significance by feting four decades of a certain Beatles record (WSJ link, pointed). The more nuanced, pessimistic and to my mind, better-truer, take on the Summer of Love marked its 40th anniversary in [...]

Part of what comes with being an art historian is an affinity for all things old and meaningful. With the loss of St. Ann's Armenian church to the dastardly NYU housing committee earlier this year, I thought it was high time I put whatever resources I could into helping save structures around the city, like St. Ann's, whose destruction would be an incredible loss to the city and its future generations. The next building on the chopping block is St. Brigid's church in the East Village. With $7million needed in repairs, the [...]
