Filed under: News , Awards Larry Marano, Getty Images If you thought it was odd there was no tribute to Clarence Clemons at this year's Grammy Awards, you're not alone. As it turns out, though, the producers of the show did have a plan to honor the late saxophonist for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band , who opened the show with a rendition of 'We Take Care of Our Own.' Unfortunately, Whitney [...]

Georgia On My Mind is most commonly associated with Ray Charles. It appears on every tribute album to Ray, and Willie Nelson (who recorded the song in 1978) sang it at his funeral. But Georgia was a standard long before Ray Charles made it his own. It was written by Hoagy Carmichael and lyricist Stuart Gorrell in 1930. The story goers that the Georgia of the title was originally intended to refer to Hoagy's sister, but realising that Gorell's words could apply also to the southern US state, the writers were happy to keep things ambiguous. The plan [...]

[Ray LaMontage performs with Levon Helm Band] credit: Fred Harrington Life is good 2011 wrapped up on Sunday evening in Canton, Mass. with the raspy, aching voice of Ray LaMontagne cutting through the night air and absolutely enrapturing the crowd of 10,000. His signature voice, sometimes haunting, sometimes reassuring, was pitch-perfect and filled the expansive grounds leaving festival goers with certainly one of the strongest acts of the weekend. Coming directly from the Raphael Saadiq set which literally left Prowse Farm on fire, LaMontagne and the Pariah Dogs [...]
PRINCE AT THE FORUM Last night was a packed house. I have been to Prince a few times at the Forum during his "Twenty One Night Stand" in Los Angeles and none of them have been as obviously SOLD OUT as this one. In usual fashion I showed up to this concert with a small tribe of friends who either had their socks rocked previously, or heard about it repetitiously from friends. Tickets were sold out at the Box Office, but that is never a [...]

The 2011 New Orleans Jazz Fest has released its menu, and it's only fitting that the vittles will be as ambitious and eclectic as the rest of the line-up. The 10-day cultural mosh pit of musicians, cooks and artisans-inspired by gospel singer Mahalia Jackson and Duke Ellington's impromptu and legendary 1970 post-Louisiana Heritage Fair revelry-has cranked it up a notch this year. Scheduled for April 29-May 1 and May 5-8 with a motley crew of musicians like Arcade Fire, Willie Nelson, Maceo Parker and Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, the fest is also hosting [...]

Syl Johnson supporting Yo La Tengo @ Maxwell's ( more by Andrew St. Clair ) Deep Groove soul singer Syl Johnson will return to the NYC stage to play a headlining date at The Bell House on June 24th . Tickets are on sale. There he'll be supported by The Sweet Divines who are also scheduled to play a show with soul frontman Lee Fields at [...]

Funk is the further evolution of rhythms and blues to an ecstatic apogee of harmony and melody in the service of the beat—a pledge of allegiance to the groove. James Brown is the godfather of funk, the maestro and chief innovator but he didn't create funk by himself. He had help. Plenty help, expert help from a band that eventually became known as The JBs, led by trombonist Fred Westley and saxophonist Maceo Parker. Because of Brown's famous, recorded exhortations—blow, Maceo, blow (and boy did Maceo blow!)—Maceo Parker (initially on baritone saxophone, then famously on tenor [...]
Can you smell it? It's the smell of sweaty, hairy armpits, unwashed hair, and weed.

Last year, Soulive helped to celebrate the month of March with a ten-show, guest-laden residency at Brooklyn Bowl that was cleverly dubbed Bowlive. For the second year in a row, the organ-groove trio will make the venue its home away from home with another ten-gig stand that kicks off tonight. Once again, the run will feature a variety of special guests that are already penciled in to sit in with the band throughout the run. Among the announced acts that will be joining Soulive this year will be Maceo Parker, Bernie Worrell, [...]

The lineup for High Sierra 2011 was just announced, nearly a full day early here on the West Coast and the same day that Electric Forest announced their lineup. Some fans may consider a tough choice between the two festivals, but not me and about 50 other friends out here in California. High Sierra is an obvious choice as it is, but with My Morning Jacket headlining the 21st annual festival and Ween , Neko Case , Warren Haynes , Yonder Mountain String Band , [...]

Toronto - Early on in his set, Maceo Parker took it upon himself to set the record straight for the audience: "We do not play jazz ... don't get me wrong, I love jazz - it's good for when you're reading a book or washing your car." He then went on to play a pretty spot-on approximation of the sort of music they do not play before launching into another lengthy funk number with his band. In an interview with The National Post , Maceo referred to his show as "2% jazz, 98% funky stuff." The distinction is [...]

Toronto - In life, there are ups and there are downs. The Steelers just lost the Superbowl, so this is a down. However, my commitment in this blog has made me write this weekly lineup tonight. Maybe it's therapeutic, I don't know. The White Stripes broke up last week, no reaction. Tonight's lost hit me like a bag of bricks. On the good side, we were nominated for best music site in Canada by the awesome CBC Radio 3 (despite them auto playing music when I go to the site, which annoys me terribly). Feel free to vote [...]

Download audio file (01-Autumns-Evening-Breeze.mp3 ) The first time we decided to collaborate on a compilation it was for Grimey , which was three volumes of hardcore hip hop. And during the process of selecting songs, we discovered that our individual musical tastes were very similar and complemented each other well. We have some dope compilation ideas for the future but for now we proudly present... All That Jazz Vol. 1. Some of the songs are strictly jazz, while others just have the smooth vibe like "Autumn's Evening [...]
There were plenty of rumors circulating that Prince would perform with Lettuce and Maceo Parker at Brooklyn Bowl for last night's Soul to Soul II benefit, but The Purple One didn't show. He may have been pooped after thrilling the MSG audience at his own gig. Our pal Sunil caught a ridiculous version of Love Bizarre featuring Sharon Jones, Maceo and an assorted cast of characters on tape at yesterday's Prince show. Check it out... Prince - Love Bizarre Check back later from some [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Holy Hell A music festival cruise featuring an all-star list of performers was raided before it even had a chance to sail the high seas. The Jam Cruise , an annual six-day festival aboard the 2,550-passenger MSC Poesia, is one of several similarly themed cruises that promise a Bonnaroo -on-the-ocean kind of experience. This year, it showcased performances by the Grateful Dead 's Bob Weir , Robert Randolph , Galactic , Taylor Hicks [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News True to its name, Jam Cruise -- a festival that sets sail from Fort Lauderdale every January -- brought together a mix of celebrated musicians, threw them on a cruise ship and gave them ample opportunity to jam with one another for days on end while sailing around the Caribbean. With late-night jam sessions complementing a round-the-clock schedule of bands, collaborations happened constantly -- many even simultaneously. But perhaps the [...]
