Now I dunno who came up with the idea to let the Mad Professor loose on Massive Attack's slighty disappointing second helping, but that person sure had vision in spades. The resulting remix/dub album No Protection remains a massive personal fave. Massive Attack & Mad Professor - Eternal Feedback (Sly) And while we're at it, here's the Prof on his own, from his humble but hard-hitting '82 debut Dub Me Crazy!! Right on. Mad Professor - Your Rights/My [...]

A track from Miguel Migs' last album - Outside The Skyline - gets the remix treatment, including from Migs in his 90s Petalpusher guise, the Mad Professor and Thievery Corporation's Rob Garza. Listen or buy. The original track already has elements of Thievery Corporation, with its dub style and vocals. Mad Professor has first go at remixing. This takes it even further into dub dancehall territory, with the expected echo set to maximum. Migs' Petalpusher dub is a lovely piece of digital dub work, mixing dub and synths. Rob Garza goes for making it sounds like [...]

Today I want to share the 702s classic "What's Going On?" by Marvin Gaye remixed live by the Mad Professor . Mad Professor is a dub producer and remix pioneer. Many of the sounds you hear in today's modern electronic music come from this man. Heavy echo, reverb effects, breaks, and warps mixed with traditional instruments and tracks are characteristic of Mad Professor's music. Some people don't see turntables and mixing as a true musical art-form but as this video shows, that's untrue. And for all the haters of remixes of classic songs, I'll just say one [...]
NPR's fantastic The Record blog brought my attention to the Dub Invasion Festival, which just wrapped up what was surely a Kingston-tastic 10 days in Boston and New York. Among the attendees were legendary pioneers of dub Lee "Scratch" Perry, who co-produced many of Bob Marley's most groundbreaking tracks, along with Adrian Sherwood, Mad Professor, and Dubblestandart. Dub music was so named because innovative Jamaican studio technicians and producers would manipulate or "dub" pre-existing master tapes so that the bass and drum sections, along with intermittent snippets of vocals, horns, and keyboard parts, would disproportionately characterize [...]
There really aren't too many forms of music more arbitrarily defined than "dub music" -- particularly in recent years. Thanks to the advent of "dubstep," it's harder than ever to pinpoint exac

This Friday, September 16th, Dubspot will welcome Mad Professor to their New York City home for a discussion of dub, dubstep, the links and history of the two genres and his own personal production and performance strategies. Like all of Dubspot's workshops, worldwide access is available via live streaming on the Dubspot Blog . Mad Professor , London-based founder of Ariwa Sounds, is bringing his years of experience in the reggae roots of dub, expanding across numerous musical genres and sharing his insights into live performance and mixing. There [...]
One of our all-time favs Fly Lo threw down on some unreleased tracks on his Soundcloud last night. Among the 8 as of yet unheard tracks are some real gems. Our favorite of which is this "Massive Attack" mix. And, yes, the track does a bit remind of that legendary group, it sounds more of the great Massive Attack mixes Mad Professor did. Of course, this is Fly Lo and the track is super brilliant/mindblowing in its own right. Sample for yourself below. p.s. You know that other bloke in the photo will be spinning one [...]

Lee 'Scratch' Perry once called dub "x-ray music," presumably because dub specialists acted like radiologists by revealing the inner workings of their subjects. They bared their basslines, their percussion strategies, their melodic accents. For No Genre's first curated mixtape, I thought I'd throw open the vacuum tube and send some swampy dub gamma rays your way. After the jump, you can stream each track of the mix and read my liner notes. Or, you can simply download the mix by following the link in the picture. [...]

Last night, 12 hours before my first neuroanatomy exam of the semester, I went to see DJ Craze at a hip-hop show near downtown LA. Now, I've typically only ever seen Craze in a rave-ish type context, but this show last night pure hippity frickin hoppity, featuring a hilariously cheesy yet talented rapper Yelawolf. So during Craze's set, after an enjoyable half-hour of some Boys In The Hood, M.O.P., and assorted classics, he noticed that the crowd had sort of fizzled and lost energy. What'd he decide to do? "Uhhh hold up! Lemme drop somethin' crazy on yo ass!" - [...]
There are some days I like to kick back and listen to a certain song over and over and over again. This is one of those songs. Massive Attack used the vocal talents of Everything But The Girl 's Tracey Thorn for their second album, and the title track of Protection became something of a sensation. The music video was something of a wonder, also, as Michel Gondry took on the role of turning the song into a video masterpiece of its own. [...]
