On June 6th, Athens, GA artists Madeline will release her album, Black Velvet , on This Will Be Our Summer. We've heard a teaser here at RE HQ and it will be highly anticipated here. With a background that ties a lifetime of working together with acts such as Japanther and the Athens-based Elephant 6 Collective, Madeline Adams lays down Karen Carpenter-esque vocals across the jangle of southern rock and indie pop to create a distinct sound that I effing love. (She's also super cute!) Check out the track and [...]

I was sitting here trying to shake this mild post music festival depression that has overcome me, and looking for the perfect soundtrack for just such an undertaking when I fell upon 'White Flag' from Ahtens,GA singer/songwriter Madeline Adams. This was a beautiful thing. I have been listening to the record all day and my mood is continuing to improve with each sequential listen. She has a beautiful voice that fits her simple, yet gorgeous, folk songs perfectly. A wonderful way to ease into a late summer weekend. * 'White [...]

The southeastern college town of Athens, GA, is an important destination for music, with a legacy that's as rich as it is deep and broad. In the late '70s and early '80s, Athens made an indelible mark on the global musical psyche by birthing groundbreaking bands like The B-52s , R.E.M. , Love Tractor , and Pylon , all of whom graced the stage at the famed 40 Watt Club. Despite the success of the aforementioned acts, Athens' diverse community of indie musicians working in various genres have refused to live in the past, and thus [...]

i briefly wrote about athen's madeline a year or so back, and at the time i said i would follow that brief post with a more extensive one. well, of course time has gotten away from me, and here we are now and madeline is about to release her very excellent white flag on 3.10. at the time i had only heard a few songs by said madeline and up until a few weeks ago i had kept on enjoying those few songs that are available through her site. her voice is as sweet as can [...]
With most bands and publicists in vacation mode last week and since after two holiday mixtapes , our well of indie Christmas carols and Hanukkah hymns was beginning to run dry, we didn't have much to work with for last week's Friday Mixtape. So we decided to scrap it and return with one this week that would be down right bangin'. Suffice to say, I think we accomplished our mission. Below you'll find a mix of this week's best new singles, covers, and remixes along with a multitude of mp3s from some talented up-and-comers. Enjoy! [...]

I have made myself a playlist called "Janvier 2009." Unlike playlists of months past, it does not contain songs that I am currently salivating all over. Instead, it includes the songs of several artists that are actually quite new to me, so that I can get accustomed to them more quickly. I think this is a good plan. Most of this playlist consists of anti-folk sorts of folks. I do not listen to so much anti-folk, which is strange because I do have an appreciation for the honesty that comes from the movement. I say "honesty," and what [...]

sup hommies? not much going on, just trying to wrap my head around my best of the year list, since its that time. one problem i always run into is this: you have one record that is great from start to finish, then you have record two that is maybe has maybe one or two misses on it, but has like 2, 3 or 4 songs on it that are just phenomenal. now, do you go with the more solid record, or the less solid but has those songs that blow you away? thats kinda where i am at the [...]

Obviously, I'm a big fan of the name Madeline these days. Which makes it all the more random and cool that I've been digging a new singer/songwriter recently (thanks to Rich over at the always wonderful Cable & Tweed ). Her name, coincidentally, is Madeline. And here are two quick reasons why you should like her, too. The first one (again, coincidentally) is a reflection on a newborn's life ("hail to ancestors and where we came from / for Great Grandma's ghost lives within your bones..."), while [...]

"I Left the Light On" - Madeline (via her official site ) "Baby Blue" - Arms & Legs (via Closet Trekkie Records ) "Fill Me With Your Light" - Clem Snide (via spinART Records ) "What a Wonderful World" - The Innocence Mission (via Badman Recording Co. )

Typically I'd try to introduce you to a band that's on the verge of releasing a record, but I'm willing to make an exception this time. Madeline is a young lady who travels the country with her guitar, playing some of the most souful, stripped-down tunes I've yet heard. There's a folk element, but there's a DIY aesthetic to the whole thing, which would probably be why she's on the Plan-It-X roster. Check out a couple tracks from last year's Kissing & Dancing record, and go here if you're not yet [...]
