Plastic Animals – Automaton EP Plastic Animals may have a sparse, lo-fi aesthetic but they don't forget their sense of melody, as a result sounding like the filthy lovechild of The XX and Wilco. The band use ambient noise to great effect, creating a stunning textured sound. A very good EP all round, but the sprawling climaxes of Sundowning and opening track Yellowcraig make it a must-listen. Yellowraig is available to listen to on their Soundcloud page. The rest of the EP will be available here [...]

Out today is Little Legend's debut EP. You can listen to it at the band's website . Often times, I just feature one song from an EP as the post, but here, picking a favorite proved tougher than normal. The self-titled 5 song EP is 5 great tracks. It's the work of Brandy Tudor, Joseph Copeland, Robbie Schiller, and Daniel Jin and it is good old fashioned rock and roll. They are giving away Saints and that's the song that I ended up featuring below. I don't like when people say that [...]
A-Trak @ Majestic Theatre in Madison, WI A-Trak performing live @ the Majestic Theatre in Madison WI. Sometime in the summer of 2011. Sound quality isn't great.... show was awesome www.MidwestWeirdos.com

Madison's always had a vibrant music scene, and it appears there's a new band coming out of the scene that I expect to make some waves. Treefort is the name of the group, and they've just released Tres Fort . On the opening track, which we've got below, the track opens with cascading guitars; I dig the bright guitar beneath the fuzzed out riffs. It's a bit like a shoe gaze track, but there's more of a concise pop element to it. The band just released this record for [...]

Whether you realize it or not, trance is alive and well . It might even offer up thrills greater than or, at least, equal to big-room/progressive house. Radio shows like Anjunabeats Worldwide give cross over hits to all house music lovers week after week. If you're skeptical about trance, drop your guard and take a listen. This Madison ID is something the world should marvel at. The Ukrainian producer has been gaining support among his trance peers for months now. The blatantly talented 23-year-old brings the heat with this uptempo masterpiece. [...]

Originating as a trio based in Madison, Wis., Sleeping in the Aviary has evolved into a Minneapolis, Minn., quintet. All the members have roots in southeastern Wisconsin, and have been playing music for a decade and more in a near-countless number of bands and one-off projects. For You and Me, Ghost the band's sound takes on the influence of an earlier era but still sounds undeniably like Sleeping in the Aviary. "The 'golden oldies' from the '50s and '60s had a major conceptual influence on this particular album," says Kozel (vocals, guitar). "The simple romantic themes [...]

If Steely Dan embraced indie pop, it would sound something like Surgeons In Heat. This Madison/Milwaukee four-piece crafts smooth, sharp indie pop rock that, without pretension, evokes a mod sort of cool. There's an undertone of agitation beneath their calm and collected surface that gives the music just the right amount of bite, recalling the songwriting of Graham Parker and Elvis Costello. If you wanted to straddle the line between a relaxed night in and a night of cruising the streets with the top down, spin the band's self-titled, debut EP. Check out Surgeons In Heat's self-titled EP [...]

Icarus Himself was started by Nick Whetro in 2008 as a solo project and has developed into a trio to include drummer Brad Kolberg and multi-instrumentalist Karl Christenson. Career Culture is the third in a series of auto-biographical recordings, beginning with Coffins, released by Science of Sound in May of 2009, followed by the EP Mexico, released almost exactly one year later. This new album was recorded at Science of Sound's studio, engineered by Ricky Riemer and mixed with the band with the help of Riemer. Guest players include Michael Gallope on keys (Janka Nabay & the Bubu [...]
In what might be the most high energy, bass heavy turn of events, Dim Mak record label founder Steve Aoki and none other than Datsik have teamed up to go on an American tour. The Dead Meat tour, in support his upcoming album, Wonderland , will be Steve Aoki's largest tour ever. Steve Aoki has spent over the last decade developing his record label, Dim Mak . I had the opportunity to discuss his upcoming album release, Wonderland , which drops just eight days from now on the 17th, in our interview . I'm [...]

When listening to new mashup artists, I always need to make sure they matched up the beats correctly. It's nice to listen to the veteran mashers, like Basic Physics, because I can just sit back and relax... I'll I have to do is figure out if I like their choices. In his latest EP, Winter Warmup , BP puts together three mashes dance-floor worthy tracks. None of them compare to his "Jagger" mashup , it's one of my favorite of the year, but maybe if I give em more time they'll be just as [...]

Purple Apple | Photo by Katie Hovland "Take Five" focuses on Chicago's ever-growing music scene by giving you insight to the city's best local acts via the best source possible: the artists themselves. Here is the latest installment featuring Purple Apple . At the tender age of eight, most kids are playing video games and eating way too much sugar. However, the young ladies of Purple Apple started a band, wrote music and lyrics, and got noticed. Just a few years later, Olivia (lead vox [...]
Photos From Lotus Show in Indy Soon Old photo from last year while we finish editing the lastest set from Indy. As always good behind-the-scenes VIP looks.

I've already had my fair share of Halloween remixes this year, but Basic Physics &&& D.veloped??? Talk about a perfect storm of mashers teaming up for one Halloween romp around! In their 2011 Halloween mix, "Turnin' Tricks for Treats," the two take on a shitload of samples to muster up one electric-horror show. Shit can get pretty dicey at times, but I consider that a good thing this time of the year. Samples used: 1. Slim Thug - Like A Boss [...]

Today it was announced that Garbage is back in the studio in L.A. after a seven-year hiatus following their 2005 studio album Bleed Like Me , which was their highest-charting album at #4 on Billboard Top 200 Album chart. As-yet-untitled, the album is projected to release in Spring 2012, and the band posted earlier that there should be a song coming out in October. They've been in the studio all summer in L.A. recording in a basement, and apparently at the infamous Western Recorders (now called EastWest Studios ). The progress [...]
