There were many, many songs I could have chosen for today's colour-themed Three of a Kind: Blue Savannah By Erasure, Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden, Natalie Cole's Pink Cadillac ... something by Aqua or Blue; or perhaps Keith Harris and Orville's poignant take on the Irving Berlin classic White Christmas . Then there's always Aaliyah's Beige Ain't Nothing But A Number , Lionel Richie's Yellow (Is It Me You're Looking For?) and Reel 2 Real's I Like To Mauve It , to name but several. But in the end I [...]

The first thing I thought of when I saw this week's theme was, "Time for some ska". My first introduction to ska music came in 1979. It sounded like this: Madness : One Step Beyond [ purchase ] I loved what I was hearing. I sought out all the ska I could find at the time, which led me to the Specials, Bad Manners, the English Beat, and the Selector. As I learned about the context for this music, I learned that [...]

On Sunday I did a post about Madness' cover of One Step Beyond and its respective B-side. Although its largely an instrumental piece, there is a spoken intro and some random shouting over the top - in English. This is great for us, but what about all the non-English speakers all over the world? Well, they should fret no longer as Madness actually recorded two more slightly different versions of the song. One is titled "Un Paso Adelante," and is basically a direct translation into Spanish. The other, "Un Passo Avanti," is the same but in Italian. This [...]
If I talk a load of rubbish today, it's not my fault. Well, it kind of is, but you'll just have to excuse me. I'm pretty exhausted. Riiiight, Madness eh? They were good weren't they? I'm kind of into Madness at the moment. They actually make up a rather large portion of my record collection, but this is completely unintentional. I haven't set out to start up a Madness collection at all, it's just kind of grown without me noticing. Today's B-side of interest comes from [...]

Seriously, what happened to the good old days when their was just one cover version? I guess I've only got myself to blame. Before we get on to various performances of this week's featured piece of music, let me first explain it a bit. Today's piece is "High Wire," which was the theme for the second season and onwards of hit spy TV series Danger Man (known as Secret Agent or Destination Danger for non-UK markets). I think, without exaggerating at all, that this is the best TV theme, ever. [...]

This past Saturday Les Gillettes came to town and completely took over! It was total madness and I had such a great time. My back is still aching from all the dancing. I probably made a fool of myself but when I think about it, do I actually care? Nah, it was so much fun! Thanks [...]

I found a great video in a charity shop the other day: Dance Craze: The Best of British Ska... Live! And what a find, featuring as it does a plethora of typically energetic performances from the six main bands of that scene - The Specials, Madness, The Beat, The Selecter, Bad Manners and The Bodysnatchers - cleverly interspersed with old Pathe newsreel footage of more staid "dance crazes" from years gone by. So there's a clever compare-and-contrast/juxtaposi tion type thingy going on. How great it must've been [...]

The Official UK Charts Company recently revealed the Top 10, best-selling albums and singles in the UK for 2008 (so far). Some of the inclusions make sense - Duffy, for instance - but one imparticular choice baffles me beyond the ability to form cohesive and rational thoughts. The best-selling UK singles of 2008 so far are: 1. Duffy – 'Mercy' 2. Nickleback – 'Rockstar' 3. Basshunter feat. DJ Mental Theo – 'Now You're Gone' 4. Estelle feat. Kanye West – 'American [...]
It doesn't matter that Big Brother 9 is only three weeks in...this is for sure the series highlight! I felt like a lunatic guffawing on my own as I watched it...and again just now when I found it on YouTube. Kathreya to win!P.s. Sorry to lower the tone with such low-brow fodder but, well, it's "hirarious"!Here are a few mp3s that might appease you: Big Brother - Stevie Wonder House of Fun - Madness Wicked Game - Chris Isaac You and I are a Gang of Losers - [...]

The subtitle of this post my very well turn out to be "How I Alienated My Religious Readers" but I got a little something stuck in my craw while reading up for this week's Science Tuesday. My last job, at Oxford, was working in a lab that focused on evolutionary developmental biology. This field of study, and in fact all life sciences, take as a given a modification of Darwin's theory of evolution. Most educated people around the world operate under the assumption that life as we know it today is the result of changes in the inherited traits of [...]
From their 1980 debut through 1983, and through a stylistic shift that saw them change from ska revivalists to a more pop-oriented sound, the British group Madness was a fixture on the UK charts with more than a dozen hit singles. In the States, their fortunes were quite different. Although they had made the album charts with 1980's Absolutely and 1981's One Step Beyond..., Madness couldn't get radio airplay or make a dent on the singles chart. That fortune changed in 1983, though. With a switch in record labels from Sire to Geffen, the [...]
While I try to sort out what I'm going to have for dinner on this fine Saturday evening, here's a simian-themed dish ideal for those amongst you who feel that they aren't getting enough cholesterol in their diets: (from The Colonial Cookbook , published in 1909 by The Lady Friends of the Colonial Club, Dorchester, MA) Honestly, I think eating a real monkey would be both tastier and healthier, though I'm told the meat can be rather gamey. A quick bit [...]

On May 29th, Our House , "the Madness musical", will open at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre for a month-long run, which proceeds a tour. The show was written by Tim Firth and features "over 20" Madness songs-hey, the guesstimate is a great sign! It means people are too busy engaged in tasks more directly tied to making the production a creative (and financial) success to spend time on a song tally. For Steve Brookstein , the first winner of The X Factor , Our House includes the [...]

Mr. Nutt is an architect of the Morris Lapidus school. Mr. Nutt is not happy when The Man TM orders the demolition of Mr. Nutt's "masterpiece." Mr. Nutt is apparently either a devout Freemason or a big fan of Robert Anton Wilson. Mr. Nutt is the type of fellow who saves jars of his own urine. Mr. Nutt is not "down" with the [...]
So I really would have been keeping you updated on a regular basis but the internet at our lodge wasn't capable or working for more than 30 seconds at a time. Basically after the incidents in San Francisco and Oakland I made my way to Salt Lake City, got swooped by the driver and headed out to Park City, dude was giving me the royal tour on the way talking about the valley and mormons and other shit that I didn't want to hear at all cuz all I was thinking was "need sleep." I finally got to [...]
