Madredeus, by rafsta Twenty-six years and three million sold albums later, the revered Portuguese band Madredeus decided to call it quits. They left behind a vast repertoire of entrancing Portuguese folk music divided over sixteen CDs, augmented by Teresa Salgueiro's alluring voice and the collective genius of men like Pedro Ayres Magalhães, Rodrigo Leão and the late Francisco Ribeiro. Below are ten of my favorite songs from my favorite Portuguese band, exquisite in their beauty and sublime in their simplicity. Vinte e seis anos e três milhões [...]

I learned from writer Philip Graham that Madredeus' new album, Castelos na Areia, marked the end of the band's storied career. What sad news - all good things in life really do come to an end. In reality, the band was never quite the same after Teresa Salgueiro's departure in 2007, but nonetheless they reinvented themselves, added 'Banda Cósmica' and attempted to modernize their sound with the addition of percussion and electronic elements, while at the same times staying grounded in tradition with the addition of a harpist. But the truth is that the band, formed in 1985, have decided [...]

Often overlooked and constantly under-appreciated, music in Portuguese is undergoing a remarkable renaissance that is redefining the many genres that it spans. Produced in countries in several different continents and showcasing an astonishing diversity of sound, lyricism, talent, rhythm, and innovation, music in Portuguese is rapidly attracting new listeners and fans across the world, many of which can't even understand the lyrics. Whether its created in Angola, Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique, Cape Verde or, increasingly, in collaborations between artists residing in these different countries, music in Portuguese is a welcome respite from the generic, mass-produced vapid fare clogging our airwaves. Teresa Salgueiro and Madredeus. Photo by fastgiaco There are some songs out there that have an almost therapeutic effect on the mind and spirit. Songs that gently massage your soul after a particularly exhausting (but ultimately rewarding) weekend of work. Palavras Ausentes by Madredeus is one of them. The soft lull and cadence of the song works like a soothing bath while the exquisite cadence of Teresa Salgueiro's voice wash away any remnants of stress that stubbornly clung to existence. Palavras Ausentes. Madredeus [...]
No words are necessary - the videos speak for themselves. Madredeus, pure and beautiful. The setting, the music, and on the horizon, the sea. It's like a painting. Except one that incorporates Teresa's stunning voice and Pedro's guitar. Included here are four unplugged and unscripted Madredeus videos shot on the Azorean islands of São Miguel. The last one, Silêncio, shot among the Azorean mountains, is available for download below.

In August 2009, Madredeus & A Banda Cósmica released their follow up to Metafonia in a somewhat secretive atmosphere, as no one was expecting a new album from them and they had done minimal marketing to promote their new baby. It's a conceptual album titled A Nova Aurora that explores the idea of human history and our place in the universe. And if you still pictured Madredeus as that Portuguese folkloric band with sparse instrument arrangements and an intense focus on string arguments and Teresa Salgueiro's vocals, you can part ways with that notion. The new look Madredeus [...]

My favorite Portuguese singer (ex. Madredeus) and her new band the Lusitânia Ensemble will grace the Kianda's shores for two concerts at Cine Tivoli on the 21st and 22nd of November, to promote Matriz, her newest album. If she sounds like that on my headphones I can only imagine what it's like to hear her live, to see her sing. Bruno Arzak at Uma Certa Angola has more. Tereza Salgueiro em Luanda! O mês de Novembro promote. A minha cantora portuguesa preferida [...]
In this blog's earliest days I wrote about Madredeus & A Banda Cosmica's best song to date , a song that I have since taken down but have never forgotten. It narrowly missed the Top 11 Songs list and now I'm having second thoughts...Nevertheless, if you wish to see perfection in the flesh, if you want to witness genius, here is a shorter version of the song as performed by Madredeus & A Banda Cosmica, with Rita Damasio and Mariana Abrunheiro doing their utmost to help us forget Teresa Salgueiro . Worth a look: [...]

For this website's 100th post and six month's anniversary, I chose to write about Teresa Salgueiro. She's a favorite of mine and this blog is filled with references Madredeus' work from various albums. Not only was Madredeus the best and most successful Portuguese act in history, but they are also a source of inspiration for this site. But Teresa Salgueiro, who changed the spelling of her artistic name to Tereza, left the band some years ago to pursue a solo career. As such, I think it's fitting that she has her own post, and the 100th one at that. [...]

I know. I get it. I have a problem. Apparently I have an inability to refrain from speaking about Madredeus every couple of days. But it's so hard to resist them. On this 3rd month birthday of Caipirinha Lounge I want to share with you a couple of songs from their album dubbed Madredeus Electrónico. The first time I got my hands on this album I freaked out. "What?! Electronic Madredeus? They're adding electronic elements to the pure acoustic and vocal bliss that is Madredeus?" I declared blasphemy before I even heard one song. But then I did [...]
I am intensely in love with this song so my subsequent ramblings on it might be a tad bit biased. But i really do believe that Haja o que Houver is the most beautiful love song written in Portuguese (or any language), and that Teresa Salgueiro's voice is at its best here. A song by Madredeus, Haja o que Houver is featured in their 6th cd, O Paraíso , and is by far the standout track. At the risk of overhyping it I'll just let the song move you in its own way, at your [...]
"Estrada da Montanha", "Amor Assim" e "Eclipse"; dão o mote para o álbum "Metafonia" (Farol), lançamento de 2008 de Madredeus & A Banda Cósmica. São 3 vídeos! Madredeus & A Banda Cósmica Pop/Alternativa www.madredeus.com

There is a common element in almost all the songs featured in this space – the acoustic guitar. Whether the song is a morna composition from Cape Verde, a gumbe ballad from Guinea Bissau, or a bossa nova inspired track from Brazil, the intricate, melodic strum of an acoustic guitar is prominent. Sharing this love for the acoustic is Madredeus , who wrote the aptly named track Guitarra as an ode to the beautiful instrument. There are two guitarists in Madredeus and the interplay they do in the beginning of the [...]

> Nearfield

Harpa, guitarra eléctrica, bateria e duas vozes femininas.
