New music from the Godfather of Canadian hip hop (Question: does Wes have that phrase TM'd yet? He should), well that's Friday at it's funnest for sure. Granted I thought of saving these songs for the next edition of the Rap-Sack Backpack , which is named for and inspired by Maestro himself, but I couldn't wait. It seems Fresh Wes has a new album on the horizon called ORCHESTR8ED NO1ZE , which certainly passes the hip hop spelling test, but he's just leaked a couple tracks via Hip Hop Canada . [...]

Maestro Fresh Wes - Let Your Backbone Slide Pure Dopeness!!! http://www.myspace.com/maestro freshwes

For the past few days, the folks at CBC Radio 3 have been asking their listeners to put together a playlist containing the best hip hop to be found on the R3 artist pages for their ehList feature. We're always up for supporting Canadian hip hop in any way we can here at the hill, so I thought I'd take a few minutes and throw a playlist together featuring some of our faves and plenty of folks that have been covered on the hill before. Well the good people of R3 [...]

It's an old-school Can-rap bonanza! I know this one is late, but it couldn't be helped due to some moving-related technical issues. It couldn't be skipped though, because hill-alumnus Mario "Mr.E" Eleftheros is currently stuck at home convalescing after knee surgery, and he requested a specific song for this week's OSM. That song you ask? Well it just so happens to be Mr. Metro by Devon. Who the ass is Devon? That's what I imagine a good many of you are asking right now. I've said [...]

I've had a crap day. Mind-numbingly crap. Stab your self in the hand with a pen to pass the time crap. The only things for days like these? A bit of boom-bap-inspired, speaker-shaking, take-no-prisoners hip hop. As luck would have it, I've received some new heat from Eternia and MoSS that meets this description. Just in time to stave off any more self harm. Lucky, that. If you're not familiar with Eternia (that's her on the left), here's the rundown: Canadian M.C.; currently working with DJ Premier's production buddy/partner MoSS (a fellow Candadian - that's him [...]

It's February, which is Black History Month in North America, but here in Nova Scotia the official name is African Heritage Month , and so I figured it makes sense to use that title for this post. It's a good fit for OSM, because not only are there plenty of awesome "conscious", old school songs that are perfect for this post, but also because, even though many folks outside the province might not know it, people of African descent have an incredibly rich history here in Nova Scotia . It's a shame there aren't too [...]

With the dust finally settling on the silly season, I've managed to take stock of the comings and goings of the last few weeks. During said stock take, I've figured out that I totally blanked on posting Get Caught Up , a solid offering from Canadian MC Eternia, that was sent through just before Christmas. Whoops. Better late than never, but... Get Caught Up is a collection of hard-hitting beats and rhymes which Eternia – who has been holding it down on the Canadian scene for some time, but has flown under the radar [...]
Today started off slow in hip-hop but ended off with a bang for sure. Up here, we've got a little saying: "Hip-hop ain't dead, it lives in the north." This post is for all Canuck hip-hop heads, and even if you're not Canadian, check this out because this newly released music video features four monsters of [...]

There are certainly some interesting shows on that list below, but I look at it and see one name only, Maestro! Being a pioneer in anything is always a challenge, but being the first person to really bring hip hop into the consciousness of our rock-obsessed nation was a monumental feat, and so I'll always have mucho respect for Fresh Wes because of that. Plus, Choclair hasn't done too bad for himself either you would have to say. If I wasn't old and cranky, I'd be at the Paragon tomorrow night, but I encourage all the youngsters [...]

The current Canadian Hip Hop scene seems to have a particular love for 1990, and really, I can't blame 'em. 1990 was a bright, colourful and fun year, just before the brooding Seattle grunge scene took over. Two particular Canadian rappers have embraced 1990 and spun it with their own fresh style. The Old Prince (2007) Shad has fully embraced 1990 with his recent video The Old Prince Still Lives at Home . The video is is a full re-enactment of the opening sequence to [...]

If you aren't in the know about this country sometimes called the Great White North, you might not have known that today is our nation's birthdate. That being said, if you clicked on this post based on any of the songs it contains, you likely must be Canadian. Either way, we're glad you're here to help us celebrate Canada Day, and so I thought it made sense to save OSM until today and drop some Old School Canadian gems on you. Either that or I was busy hosting some guests over the weekend (bigup to T and Jen) and didn't [...]
Ok, he's a new post series I'm starting here on the hill. Basically, every Monday morning when you stop by this here site, you can count on finding a couple gems from hip hop's ballyhooed golden age. I'll sort through my vast digital treasure trove of hip hop hits to find songs I consider classics for one reason or another. It's not as if you needed another reason to come to climb the hill, but this should give you a little added incentive to cyber scale us on a Monday morning. I know there's plenty of other [...]
