San Francisco's jangle-pop group Magic Bullets have released the first single from their upcoming (and final) release, the Much Ado About EP, available April 3 on Brooklyn–based label Mon Amie . We interviewed the band when they announced the split this summer and you can read about their thoughts (spoiler: there's no bad blood) here . "What Took You So Long" is just the type of sunny pop we've come to expect from Magic Bullets over the last 7 years. While lead singer Philip Benson laments a long-term crush not [...]

When talking to the Terry Malts earlier this year, I was really sad to hear that their other project Magic Bullets was pretty much closed, possibly for good. Still, the band is going to release one final EP on Mon Amie Records on April 3rd, and I'm pretty pleased with the final result; it's titled Much Ado About. For their faster paced current workings, you'll find a cleaner sheen on the Magic Bullets front, possibly even one that gets you [...]

If you checked out our Top Songs, you probably saw Terry Malts , and hopefully you were all over that jam. But now, as the band promised when we caught up with them at 29th Street Ballroom, they've finally got their album, Killing Time , ready for release on Slumberland on February 21st. This track's a mix of the group's former project, Magic Bullets , and their own fuzzy pop sensibility that they've portrayed in TM. It's definitely not as quick as "Something [...]
Words by Tom Mughal It sounds petty, but I've never been able to listen to the Smiths purely because of the fact I really dislike Morrissey 's voice. This may be the reason why I've actually enjoyed Magic Bullets , a San Francisco-born indie pop band that has been dancing around commercial success for over 7 years now. The boys manage to emulate the best bits about the iconic Mancunian '80s band; their melodies are employed straight out of Johnny Marr's school of guitar, and I would not be surprised [...]

This last Monday was a busy night at ATH, but personally, the highlight of my day was always going to be the viewing of Terry Malts and Wax Idols . Here are a few words on the show, and some excellent pictures too! Austin's Hidden Ritual opened up the evening, and while I think they were struggling with a bit of vocal issues, I could still feel that there was plenty to look forward to from the band in the future. [...]
I've been waiting to hear the new project from the folks behind Magic Bullets for a while now. Magic Bullets were a lanky sort of garage-lounge act and I'd heard that Terry Malts was the thrashy punk phoenix rising from those ashes. "Something About You" certainly kicks their former incarnation down the stairs and in [...]
During the summer I caught wind of this project by following the wonderful Magic Bullets , but Terry Malts is a beast of a different sort. They're a little bit more upbeat, and they've got a more direct approach to rocking. Just this week they'll be releasing a new 73 on Slumberland Records , and we've got the A Side from the Something About You EP . It breezes in quick, with a little bit of bounce. You'll find [...]

Last Wednesday the Rickshaw was packed with those celebrating the release of Tim Cohen's new LP The Glad Birth of Love , as well as the tentatively labeled "farewell show" for longtime indie pop Bay Area band Magic Bullets . In recent years, new members have come into Magic Bullets and their set has evolved as a result, but, for this special evening, they also performed a few old songs. Their set opened with a hit from the early years, "Heatstroke" - which has the [...]

Photos by: Nicole L. Browner "Never say never," say the members of Magic Bullets , who are just as uncertain as anybody else about whether or not tonight's show at the Rickshaw Stop will be the band's finale after seven years together. It'll definitely be the last show for a while, as the band's sixth drummer, Alex Kaiser (formerly of Tempo No Tempo ), departs for graduate school. Seven years can produce a lot of memories, temporary band members, shows to forget and those [...]

After performing at All Tomorrow's Parties, Woodsist Festival, and touring with the likes of Clinic and Deerhunter, the Bay's own Fresh & Onlys is ready for their Outside Lands debut and it's about time. This band is by far one of Kata Rokkar's favorite Bay Area bands and for good reason. Their latest record, 20102s Play It Strange is a string of punchy, soulful heartland-rock anthems that call out a time of loose pop hooks and melodies as romantic as the lyrics that fill them. The Fresh & Onlys draw obvious influence [...]

Awesome, Awesome, Awesome. Any Joe Blow music blogger can throw together a playlist of decent songs (believe me, I have tried one too many times). Rarely am I high-fiving strangers or chest-bumping my ladyfriend when a new one pops up on the interweb...unless of course if it comes from a select few of my favourite music junkies. We have already seen a couple from I am Friends, You are Fuel and Music For Ants recently...stepping into the spotlight today is the newest release from Canadian superbloggers, Ca Va Cool . So good! Get it [...]

Sometimes, there's too much good music. Mixtapes are a chance to pick and choose from the spectrum of too muchness and bring friends and readers some of the best of what I've heard recently. But sometimes there's still too much, which is why I decided to split this mix into 2 parts, or 'sides', if you will. Part 1 is California Sunrise, because as you'll learn quickly in the captions below, California has inadvertently become a major theme in my listening choices as of late. Like past mixes, this one's heavily influenced by how I feel with the on-set of my favourite time [...]

Daniel @ On My Radar Lying Around - Magic Bullets Summery tracks is probably one of my favourite themes just because there is such a wide variety of songs and artists to choose from. But a summery track to one person might not be the same to another. So how do you differentiate between something summery or not? I usually look for something peppy with a nice upbeat spark. There has to be some sort of pzazz and that is why I'm going to go with one [...]

Occasionally you let things slip, forgetting to check in on your favorite labels or sites, but when go back, you always find a gem waiting for you. Such is the case with this latest single from Slumberland Records by Terry Malts , who love to be hidden behind a dense fog of mystery. But, luckily, my imaginary best friend over at Finest Kiss hints that the band is a side-project of Magic Bullets, making the "I'm Neurotic" single even closer to [...]

I wondered why the press release for the new Terry Malts single was so sketchy. All this stuff about them being mysterious and no one knowing who these enigmatic bay area punks were. It's not like they're wearing giant eyeballs on their heads when they play. So why the the obfuscation? Are they trying to keep it a secret because their boss doesn't like moonlighting? At first I thought it was a Weekend side project where they shoveled some dirt away from their melodies, but it turns out it's a Magic [...]

Terror Eyes and Yours Truly have collaborated again to curate a screening party of their respective work, along with a live show featuring Magic Bullets , Pregnant (Sacramento) and J. Irvin Dally . The party takes place this Sunday at a location which will be revealed only to those who RSVP to the Facebook invitation (8pm, $5). This bill is eclectic but very intriguing - Magic Bullets will be experimenting [...]

For a while now, the music coming out of the Bay Area has been hovering around some level of greatness. Bands like Sonny and The Sunsets, Thee Oh Sees and The Fresh and Onlys—all written about in a recent New York Times article —play music that defies contemporary fads, standards, and to a degree, interference from computers: it's classic in every sense of the word, as if plucked right out of San Francisco during the sweet pop and psychedelic-infested 1960s via some sort of slipstream in the fabric of time. And these bands, along with the Girls [...]
