An album ending is an important nut to crack for a band, especially one on a debut album. Sure, the beginning is important because it hooks people in, and the middle usually carries the strength of a record, but the ending must be special. It's the last thing that listeners get to experience before deciding whether an album is worth a replay or not. Is anyone surprised, then, when albums have epic finales that usually stretch longer than the songs that came before it? Well, the duo OMBRE has something to say about that [...]

For some people, Monday is a day for focusing and energizing, shaking off that weekend rust and getting ready to punch the week in the face, rhetorically speaking. But for most of us, it's really not that at all... It's just... It's always there, looming, waiting to make us face the world on its terms, not ours. Some playlists will try to stop that, to change you from Samuel Sadsack to Mabel Motivated. This one won't. This is for those Mondays when you give up before your alarm stops ringing. Enjoy (All 10 tracks [...]

Julianna Bawrick who simply had one of thee best Lp's of last year with her stunning ' The Magic Place ' album, returns with a new hymnal titled 'Never Change.' You can enjoy all of its (free) glory below, your day just got a little bit more peaceful. Julianna Barwick - Never Change

Asthmatic Kitty just posted up this stunning, slow-building new hymn from Julianna Barwick . " Never Change " is as beautiful and calming and cathartic as anything on The Magic Place - one of the best records of last year - and hopefully hints at what's to come from Barwick in 2012: mp3: Julianna Barwick :: Never Change

ALBUMS OF 2011 #30 - #26 #30 Tycho - Dive - Dive ( MP3 ) In addition to being a fairly successful graphic designer (as indicated above), Scott Hansen has also been performing as electronic act Tycho since 2002. ‘Dive’, a Ghostly International release from 2011, eschews paranoia in its constantly unfurling, dream-like soundscapes and vast, holistic appeal. Its recorded with live drums, but assembled on the computer, this approach dowsing a pulsating deep bass with a sun-soaked tone which revels in its own warmth. Buy the album or check out Hansen’s [...]

My occassional fliratatons with new age music, if you could even call it such, brought me through musicians who today aren't quite known for that genre even if lasting streams of those influences clearly remain in their subsequent work. And I never quite enjoyed it. Sarah McLachlan's debut album Touch (1988) surely looked the part with the ornately (and of course slightly eerily) decorated sepia toned cover art. I found myself liking her subsequent albums more, probably owing to their stronger rock and pop leanings, and soon gave away my copy of the album to a friend who [...]

disco solare, etereo, di estasi contemplativa e in un certo senso “religiosa” questo debutto di Julianna Barwick per Asthmatic Kitty - The Magic Place : The Magic Place by Julianna Barwick
Click image to download full album Sounds like: Enya, Sigur Ros, How To Dress Well "Julianna Barwick - The Magic Place" What's so good? It comes as no surprise that Julianna Barwick spent time in church growing up. Combining basic ooh-ing and ahh-ing vocals and electronic instrumentation with a strong, simple point of view, it's as if Barwick has a direct tap on pure religious [...]

Words by Jacob Barron Last year was the first complete year of soundtracking and yea, our earth continued to spin, and we are hence blessed to find ourselves faced with yet another autumn. The same pile of leaves that you raked up last year will soon form in your backyards and the same bittersweet feeling you had last year will seep into your listening, or at least it should. That feeling of happy sadness goes along with autumn as it does with indie rock, since that sort of ambiguity is what fuels a great [...]

<a href=" http://magicplaces.bandcamp.co m/album/melodrama"& ;gt;Melodrama by Magic Places</a&a mp;amp;gt;

Magic Places sent over his new Melodrama EP at the absolute perfect time. With the final space shuttle mission in progress, many are focused on celestial travel, which is perhaps the defining theme of Magic Places' epic electronic soundscapes. It's the first thing I think of whenever I listen to his music, anyway. That I received the EP on a night when I had no electricity in my apartment and had to listen in the soft candescence of moonlight was a coincidence that was only too fitting. Like The Time-Traveler's [...]
Try as you might to explain how Julianna Barwick gets across deep emotion and meaning without uttering a single word, maybe it's best to let The Magic Place do all the talking, because the results speak for themselves. Everyone may have a voice, but not too many know how to use it to full effect like Julianna Barwick does. Getting across deep emotion and meaning without ever uttering a single word, Barwick finds the sweet spot between the sensual and the sacred in a way that's never weighed down by New Age-y baggage on her album, The [...]
Sanguine and Florine were gorgeous, fragile records, like bendable glass floating through a heavy breeze. Largely a capella, they soothed the listener out of any initial disorientation he might have felt upon first encountering Julianna Barwick’s echoing walls of wordless vocal tones. Now of course, I still enjoy those two releases (from 2006 and 2009, respectively). Their inherent quality hasn’t changed. But Barwick’s latest album, The Magic Place , finds the Brooklyn-based singer imbued with a newfound, pious confidence, and the results—nine spacious, ghostly, rather pastoral tracks—are each superior in both melody/harmony and songwriting [...]

DOWNLOAD: Julianna Barwick - The Magic Place (MP3) "The Magic Place was a tree on our farm," says Louisiana-raised Brooklynite Julianna Barwick . "It was in the back pasture. It was one tree that grew up, down and around. You had to crawl in and once you were inside, it was like there were different rooms, and you could actually lay in the branches. We named it 'The Magic Place' because it really was magical, especially for a kid, and that's how I feel about my [...]

Ambient. Ouch. There, I said it. The music of Julianna Barwick could be described as such, but it's so much more than that label can adequately describe. It's church music for the secular, medieval chanting for the digital age, it's - in the words of Barwick herself - music that's "looking for the perfect reverb". Second album proper The Magic Place is the ultimate loops record, full of polyphonic vocals that are layered to fill the room with one woman's heart, soul and of course, voice. What's central to this record is [...]
I have been ranting and raving about Julianna Barwick's full-length debut, The Magic Place , for a few months now, and I don't think any one is going to hate on me much for that. Laying down absolutely gorgeous soundscapes time after time, Barwick put together quite the flowing album. The title track off the LP, which is beautiful in so many ways, now has a slow-paced, enlightening video to go along with it. Hit the skip to peep the video for "The Magic Place". [...]

Now that we're firmly into spring and weather is starting to brighten up we can start looking forward to summer. In the video for "The Magic Place" Julianna Barwick brings the idea of a hazy summer to a whole new level through colourful and kaleidoscopic fuzzy clips of people enjoying the sunshine and nature. Accompanied with her heavenly vocals, watching this video makes me feel like I'm sunbathing peacefully. Julianna Barwick - "The Magic Place" from Jacob Corbin on Vimeo . [...]
