Hails From: Essex, UK Influences: David Bowie, Prince, Talking Heads File Under: Melodic keyboard heavy indie-dance-funk Visit Magistrates on MySpace. MP3: Magistrates - Make This Work
NME, the notorious UK hype mag, had a list of bands to watch out for in 2009, some of which I had heard of, some of which I hadn't. Because of NME's love of early (and often undeserved) hype, it's tough to know what's worth looking into. But my interest was picked by the description: "Influenced by Prince, Talking Heads and David Bowie, Essex foursome Magistrates claim to have a 'masterplan to infect the world with a dirty groove like some out of control STD.'" [...]

This Kendall's Favorite Songs of 2008 thing is starting to get old if I can say so myself (I can). Today we have my favorite "Indie Rock" songs of 2008. Basically I classified any group that uses a guitar as "Indie Rock". That's the way they taught us to label things at The School for Unimaginative People Who Can't Think of Descriptive Words Good. Dance The Bloody Beetroots – Rombo The Bloody Beetroots – Butter Justice – Planisphere Parts 1 through 4 [...]

Magistrates - Make This Work Nice new track by English rock group Magistrates . A must listen for all Klaxons lovers. It's from their Make This Work (2008) single, which is out now on XL Recordings !

Me and brent will both be out of town this weekend, so there probably won't be many posts. But here is this month's mix for you to enjoy over the weekend. Some of the songs we have posted on already but are just too good to keep off the mix, others are brand spankin' new. As always, if you like what you hear buy the album/EP/etc. Enjoy. (High Places) So, readers, this is a new idea for a feature that I've been kicking around in my head over the weekend, tackling new music with a form of poetry that most of us haven't used since we first learned it (not that I want to presume about MFR readers' haiku usage). This is the first installment, and with it comes brand new music from Brooklyn-based alt-country practitioners Motel Motel; Candian synth songstress Kellarissa; ethereal world-pop duo High Places; the legendary Lou Reed, with a live rendition of a classic track; UK neo-soulsters Magistrates; and The Present [...]
After reports that 2007's inaugural Field Day event was less than pleasurable, I wasn't sure whether this year's all day outdoor extravaganza would be worth going. But it appeared that the organisers were being sincere in their attempts to improve things this time around and the line up was stellar considering a ticket price of under 30 quid. Well, until el Guincho, Dan Deacon, Primary 1, Mystery Jets and Dirty Projectors all pulled out. Nonetheless, I thought it was pretty okay. It was also pretty wet! Cheers to Sam, Craig ( Joy-Rides ), Ronnie [...]
1. Ladyhawke - "Dusk Till Dawn (Canyons Garage Disco Mix)" (mp3) I'm certain that by now you're thinking you've heard every Ladyhawke remix known to mankind. Well, you simply haven't until you've heard Canyons' remix of "Dusk Till Dawn." Wobbly synths rev up a space-age disco feel while Pip Brown lays down a gossamer veil of vocals. Mmm... 2. Low Motion Disco - "Love Love Love (Soft Rocks Remix)" (mp3) This remix of Low Motion Disco could pass for something else. Um, Chromatics much? 3. Metronomy - [...]

Oi! Oioioi! Magistrates - Make This Work [...]
Magistrates hail from South Woodham, Essex. The lineup includes Paul Usher (vocals, keyboards), Mark Brandon (guitar), Thom Galbally (bass) and Andy Grant (drums). These guys play an interesting fusion of funk and pop. Imagine the early Prince, The Ohio Players and Kool & the Gang. It's funk of the scratchy and organic variety rather than the outrageous p-funk of say Funkadelic or Parliament. Chicken-scratch guitars and nervy cymbal clashes rather than outargeous basslines and synths. They have a distinctive lo-fi sound, probably down to the fact that 'Make This Work' was recorded in the guitarists bedroom on a [...]

First things first: these recordings are rough as hell. To the point where you can't be sure if they were trying to make them sound bad or if we're dealing with a Black Kids 2007 thing where the songs are good but the record sounds like shit. But, inside of that debate is undeniable promise. Magistrates , with an awfully colonial name, play sort-of a coked-out, spastic brand of indie-rock. It's keyboard driven and it runs until it's out of breath. It's a little bit of a freak-out . There are choruses inside the [...]
