Yeah, I totally forgot to do this last week, what with being distracted by... I dunno, life. So today, y'all are getting a two-fer. Ten, count 'em, ten songs that have been tickling my eardrums. 1. Red by Okkervil River, from Don't Fall in Love With Everyone You See [Jagjaguwar, 2002] // A short film set to the song One of my favorite working bands, back before they had some of the flourish and polish they have now. This is ultimately a simple song, done in [...]
Here are three things I love: 1) Bob Dylan in general 2) Jeff Tweedy 's lilting voice 3) everyone's favorite choral chamber pop group, Fleet Foxes You may have heard that these three things were combined in glorious fashion this summer as the latter two covered a song by the former during their recent tour together. Now, they're offering an mp3 of that little bit of magic for FREE over [...]

Take heart, those of you who fear the imminent demise of the era where people read about music on stapled-and-printed pages: Seven music-related periodicals have made the short list of the Chicago Tribune 's annual "50 Best Magazines" list. They are: the Baroque-centric bimonthly Goldberg ; the classical mag Gramophone ; the indie bible Magnet ; the Metropolitan Opera's house organ Opera News ; the still-hanging-in-there Rolling Stone , which gets points for its access and being nicer than Pitchfork; and the home-recording obsessives' guide Tape Op [...]

A few weeks ago over at collaborative music blog Star Maker Machine I had the opportunity to share Bob Marley's Stir It Up -- a song which I maintain is one of the great summersongs of all time, in spite of its subversive political undertones. In my accompanying post, I noted that: Bob Marley's greatest hits release Legend may have been just a posthumous compilation, but it was a perfect, complete set; it caught fire upon its release, bringing the sound of reggae full-bore into [...]
Question: Who is this quote describing?: "He doesn't want to be our congressman anymore. It's clear he's left the building. The guy's got Hollywood fever, and that would be fine if he was using his national stature to actually get things done." That is a quote from Cleveland City Councilman Joe Cimperman, describing Dennis Kuchinich who is having some trouble holding on to his seat in Congress. Cimperman is running against everyone's favorite peacenik in the Democratic primary...and he is actually doing pretty well. The Flaming Lips [...]
(No Ratings Yet) Loading ... [...]

In truth, I can't be sure who wrote and sang a lot of these originally. I mean, ok in truth, I could do the research for each, but I think that would just take the fun out of it for me. I mean, most are just Christmas classics. We'll leave it at that. Tune in tomorrow to My Old Kentucky Blog Radio on SIRIUS Left Of Center, Channel 26 at Noon EST and again at Midnight EST to hear all of these and a lot more non-cover Christmas songs by your favorites...your Christmas Eve/Day [...]

Mmmmmm. Cookies. My 4-year-old and I baked those Rudolph cookies last weekend. There was sugar and M&Ms everywhere, and don't even get me started on how hard it was to bite those pretzels into antler shapes. Unsanitary, but it gets the job done the only way I could figure out how. The end result was fantastic, and we've been delivering (what I now realize are little saliva-contaminated) batches to our good friends all week long. While we baked, we listened to my new Christmas mix for 2007 that I've been tweaking and perfecting for weeks. I think I'm [...]
As the only chick who contributes to MOKB, you might have noticed that I, like many chicks, have a thing for catchy, danceable pop with a sugary cherry on top. You may love it or you may hate it. Maybe you've read Pop Dee-Lite, maybe you haven't. But pop music will never go away. And, yes, it's easy to hate a lot of pop songs these days, especially with radio spoon-feeding us the same 10 crappy pop songs from the same 10 crappy pop bands/artists (Nickelback, Fergie, Daughtry, etc.) over and over again. I like to [...]

December 3, and we've got some great Norwegian artists featured in today's christmas post. We congratulate Norway's Prince Sverre Magnus with his birthday today (born 2005) .... and congrats also to Ozzy Osbourne (born 1948)... Well, let's hear some music!: Remington Super 60 - Here Comes Christmas (great track from RS60's new and free 4 track christmas ep, available for download from their website until 24 December) Bright Paper Werewolves - It's not christmas every day (from [...]

[ that's the two-year-old me on the right, celebrating something in fine style - I think it was a cousin's birthday ] Two years ago today I started Fuel/Friends, mostly on a lark, to talk about my passion for music and all the other good things in this world. My how we've grown, and what fun we've had these last two years. I sincerely appreciate each of you guys who stop by each day to see what I have to say, and the attention that you pay to both my writing and my musical selections. It's pretty much [...]

* Magnet-Lonely No More * Magnet-You Got Me

Stars were magnificent. They had more energy than I thought they would, with cute little Amy Millan bouncing around the stage and/or crowd surfing, and the equally adorable Torquil Campbell showing off all of his 80's dance moves. Compared to the hundred or so other bands I've seen in the last five years, Stars were sooo excited to be there and amazed that they had such a packed house. I've heard a lot of people complain about In Our Bedroom After the War and I was probably one of them. Hearing most of the [...]

When listening to music, whether you are an amateur or an apparent know-it-all, it is usually easy to recognize when an artist is on the verge of mainstream success. Providing a sense of both instant accessibility and amiability, the genre of pop (when done right) has been the most common output for this type of success. Well, due to the recent failures over the past few years of many one-hit pop wonders, it is entirely realistic to say that Evan Johansen is perhaps too good for mainstream pop. While it is common to discover a sound of guiltless radio-friendly accessibility [...]

Much like the previous mix ( Album Enders From The Ladies Of '07 ), this is a mix of songs that are the last cut on albums released in 2007 by men or bands of men. Of course, you could probably ascertain that from the title. Just call me The Duke of Redundancy. These are mellow songs, perfect for ending your day with. Get it? Album enders for ending your day (falling asleep). 1. Explosions In The Sky ~ So Long, Lonesome 2. Magnet ~ Lucid [...]
