MP3: Magnolia Electric Co. - "Josephine" from Jospehine, due July 21 on Secretly Canadian. "I've turned your life so upside-down / I don't know how you stayed or why." So begins the title track from Jason Molina's latest album. Doesn't...

From Pitchfork: It's been nearly three years since Fading Trails, the last proper album from rootsy Midwesterners Magnolia Electric Co. In the time since that album's release, frontman Jason Molina moved to London, and touring bassist Even Farrell died tragically in an Oakland apartment fire. But the band still soldiers on. On July 21, Secretly Canadian will release Josephine, Magnolia's spare song-cycle of a new album, which they recorded with engineer Steve Albini. (The cover and tracklist for Josephine, along with the band's summer tour itinerary, can be found at the end of this [...]

Jason Molina and crew are back with a new LP, entitled Josephine , due out July 21st here in the U.S. The upcoming album will be the first full-length from the group since 2006 and will once again feature Steve Albini as producer. The record is, apparently, a somewhat indirect but very emotionally heavy tribute to the life of the late Evan Farrell, the band's former bassist. Also, the new material showcases a more sparse, delicate side of the band's sound than they have previously explored. The guys are offering the new album's title track for download [...]

July 21st sees the release of Magnolia Electric Co.'s fifth LP, Josephine, an album that marks Jason Molina's sixteenth full-length with the Secretly Canadian label. In a word, prolific. Whether recording under him own name, Songs: Ohia, or Magnolia Electric Co., Molina consistently delivers, and Josephine proves to be no exception. A skilled tradesman, Molina [...]

Do you remember those English teachers that made you turn in the gigantic term papers at the end of the school year in a big yellow envelope filled with notecards, outlines and rough drafts? I'm that English teacher. The mention of my name this time of year is likely to spark a multitude of emotions, particularly a healthy mix of dread and outrage. If I were to go spy on the facebook pages of my students, I'd no doubt find a slew of insults, swearing, and outright threats streaming down their update threads. Sometimes I laugh because I'm in complete [...]

www.california66revue.com / MySpace We always seem to be talking about (relatively) new music hereabouts. Let's talk about some old. A few acts with legendary names recently announced tours, but as is the case more often than not, the actual product bears some extra scrutiny. First, you've got '60s British pop giants The Zombies . Though four of the five original members still survive - guitarist Paul Atkinson died in 2004 - and they've reunited for special shows in the UK in recent years, this touring outfit boasts just two original members. [mp3] Magnolia Electric Company: "Josephine" It was a good day yesterday. Just as our constant listening Jason Molina's back catalog began to wear thin, he announced the release of the newest Magnolia Electric Company record " Josephine " coming out July 21st on Secretly Canadian. Josephine promises to pack a strong emotional punch as it is an attempt to capture the emotions of the band in the wake of the death of bassist Evan Farrell who tragically passed away in 2007. Molina has honed his [...]

Magnolia Electric Co. 's latest album, Josephine , will be out July 21 on Secretly Canadian, and the band has released the title track to whet our musical appetites. It seems to be everything I'd hoped for from Jason Molina's next effort. However, this is more than just a musical project. It's also a tribute to the Electric Co.'s late bassist Evan Farrell, who passed away in 2007. Josephine is an attempt to bring Farrell's hopes for the record to fruition. In addition, Magnolia Electric Co. will be touring with [...]

Opening shows is a certainly a double-edged sword: you're playing to a half-full room of largely uninterested people, but then again it's a far larger crowd than you'd draw on your own.Magnolia Electric Co. played a top-notch set leading up to the Avett Brothers three weeks back, and the band is headed back out on the road again this summer, with a July 27 show at Solar Culture. I reckon that
