Going into SXSW this year, I was curious to see how the economic meltdown was going to affect the festival. I had heard that fewer labels were having showcases, and fewer journalists and label employe... Continue reading "St. Louis at SXSW: The Pragmatic, Black Spade, Theodore and more" >

So just cleaning up my desktop. I tend to find songs, take a listen, then know I am going to like it and simply download to my desktop. I tend to leave soo many tracks on my desktop that I miss actually listening to them! So here we have some tracks that haven't made it into an "organized folder" in order to arrange in perfect harmony (no pun intended) with my music library. I have included a selection for you to see if we are on the same page, but some were removed due to thinking they aren't really approved [...]

So, this year's model of SXSW snuck up on me: Two weeks from now, I'll be in Austin running around in eighty different directions, music surrounding me from the second I step off the plane. Accordingl... Continue reading "SXSW: Local St. Louis Bands Going? " >
Here's a pairing you might not have expected: Magnolia Summer remixed by the RAC. The song totally sounds like the type of dreamcloud music found in an 8-bit Nintendo game. Hey, if you haven't heard...."Magnolia Summer"! Welcome again kiddies to another installment of "If You Haven't Heard" and the band in question - Magnolia Summer. This St. Louis based "rock" band (as they describe themselves) is a bit of a collection of friends that have been interchanged over the past few years under the moniker "Magnolia Summer". The eye of this storm (does that make it sound bad?) is Chris Grabau and he is bringing the family back together for the 3rd and most recent release entitled "Lines From The Frame" out of the Undertow Music Collective stables. [...]

Congratulations to Magnolia Summer , whose song about President William McKinley, "Czolgosz's Dream," was one of three featured as a download on NPR Music's story about Of Great and Mortal Men . (For reference, the other tracks featured are about Herbert Hoover ("Woe Is A Spoon-Shaped Heart, featuring Marla Hansen) and Jimmy Carter ("A Great Beam of Light," which features Rosie Thomas).) (McKinley) This three-CD collection, as we talked about earlier in the summer in our interview with co-writers [...]
Bill Streeter has quietly started doing some pretty awe-inspiring work with local musicians over at Lo-Fi Sessions . The premise is simple: He films performances with one-camera, no editing and live sound at the colorful crevices of the City Museum . The evocative, rich performances remind me of the work Vincent Moon's been doing with his "Take Away Shows," where he captures musicians performing in various locales and cities. Or the Black Cab Sessions , where people are caught doing one song, [...]

(Magnolia Summer, live on Saturday night) Besides seeing The Dark Knight , that is. (I have not gone yet. Yes, I know.) This weekend, what I did: *Friday: Tiffany at Home Nightclub *Saturday: Magnolia Summer/Treeweasels at Off Broadway. Verdict: TW before its time, reminded me hardcore of Drive-By Truckers, with a dash of later-era Joe Strummer, along with late-'80s Southern jangle. M. Summer new stuff sounds fantastic; urgent and brisk. R.E.M. cover ("Finest Worksong") dovetailed neatly with the message [...]
(by me, taken in Off Broadway's ladies bathroom) This Saturday sees a reunion of sorts for the Treeweasels , a long-ago St. Louis group. Says Roy Kasten in this week's paper : [The Treeweasels] sounded like a punky, countrified R.E.M. with some Pere Ubu singles melted over their four-track, though they couldn't really be bothered to be oblique. Singer E.J. Fitch never met an ironic sneer he couldn't twist into a good-natured hook, guitarist Scott Roever burned every cease-and-desist order from Roger McGuinn and Mick Ronson, and drummer Danny Kathriner [...]

(Chris Grabau of Magnolia Summer) Magnolia Summer 's Chris Grabau has been hard at work recording new music as of late, but the first new music to emerge from his project in a while is a track on the Of Great and Mortal Men: 43 Songs for 43 Presidencies project. Grabau recently took time to answer some questions about the track on which Magnolia Summer appears, "William McKinley: Czolgosz's Dream." (For reference: McKinley, our 25th president, was born in Ohio and [...]

(the presidential trio) With the 2008 presidental election rapidly approaching, it's entirely appropriate that a trio of songwriters -- Christian Kiefer , J. Matthew Gerken and Jefferson Pitcher -- has collaborated on an ambitious project: a three-CD boxed set featuring a song about each U.S. president. (Move over, Sufjan Stevens and your state project!) Called Of Great and Mortal Men: 43 Songs for 43 U.S. Presidencies , the collection is admittedly a dense body of work, something to digest slowly and carefully over time, rather than [...]
(Day 2 begins here.) DAY 2 (continued) The talk with Ken Bethea took awhile so the guys went on without me. (I don't know how anyone survived before without texting capabilities at these things, it is essential.) As I mentioned before, sleep and food are kind of as-you-go at this thing, but I decided to take full advantage of a sushi bar that was near the 8 pm venue. I was still trying to

The day is finally here! Tomorrow is the 2006 Lot Music Festival . For the second year in a row, I am involved with this event and this year, I picked about 90% of this year's performers (notice the wiggle room I left myself in case you don't like one of them?). We have expanded the lineup this year to include 8 mainstage bands from last year's 6. I may be a little biased, but I think this year's lineup is the best one we've had yet. The event takes place from 4:00 p.m. until 1:30 a.m. [...]
