mp3: Mahalia Jackson - Joshua Fit The Battle Born in New Orleans in 1911, Mahalia Jackson became the most successful gospel singer of her time. She sang at JFK's inaugural ball and at the March on Washington, where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech. She also sang at King's funeral. On today's selection, recorded in the mid 1950s, Jackson is backed by the Falls-Jones Ensemble. I've always enjoyed the Mildred Jones' rollicking piano on this recording, taken from an EP released on the Philips label around 1960. Although [...]
A contemporary Christmas classic - with city streets instead of woods and lanes, Salvation Army bell ringers outside department stores rather than sleigh bells jingling. First presented in 1950 in both a movie, sung by Bob Hope, and on record, sung by his frequent film partner, Bing Crosby. Crosby would record it a number of additional times - here's one of those versions: Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney, "Silver Bells" Here's what Wikipedia has to say: Silver Bells is a classic Christmas song, composed by [...]

I recently ripped some vinyl into mp3s, and below is a selection of some of those albums. Since these are old records and I'm too lazy to digitally clean up each song, you'll hear a crackling on each track, but perhaps a few of you will think that's charming. Cold Specks
With a creaky yet tranquil voice that sounds like it should belong to a 43-year-old, British music moguls are expecting big things from 23-year-old Al Spx. Hailing from Canada, the home of many other strong acoustic talents, Spx describes her sound as "doom soul". She currently resides in London and calls her project Cold Specks,
Mahalia Jackson - “How I Got Over” (video)
Today, Sam Phillips puts the spotlight on some of her favorite film and music. "How I Got Over" is my favorite Mahalia Jackson song; it was sung as an amazing incantation before Dr. Martin Luther King gave his famous "I Have A Dream" speech at the 1963 March on Washington. The video and audio are not high def here, but I am hoping it will inspire you to look for the documentary on her. Aretha Franklin recorded my favorite version of this song on her live gospel album.
Tedeschi Trucks Band's Simple Things: Mahalia Jackson
Since the mid-'90s, Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks have both had successful music careers, she as an acclaimed singer/songwriter and he as an electrifying guitar player with his group and the Allman Brothers Band, among others. The two met on tour in 1999, married a couple of years later and had two children, but their [...]

Eat to the Beat: Jazz Fest Licks its Chops
The 2011 New Orleans Jazz Fest has released its menu, and it's only fitting that the vittles will be as ambitious and eclectic as the rest of the line-up. The 10-day cultural mosh pit of musicians, cooks and artisans-inspired by gospel singer Mahalia Jackson and Duke Ellington's impromptu and legendary 1970 post-Louisiana Heritage Fair revelry-has cranked it up a notch this year. Scheduled for April 29-May 1 and May 5-8 with a motley crew of musicians like Arcade Fire, Willie Nelson, Maceo Parker and Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, the fest is also hosting [...]

Precious Lord - Mahalia Jackson
Written by Thomas Dorsey - known as "the father of black gospel music". Dorsey was the music director at Pilgrim Baptist Church in Chicago from 1932 until the late 1970s. His best known composition, "Take My Hand, Precious Lord", was performed by Mahalia Jackson and was a favorite of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., and "Peace in the Valley", which was a hit for Red Foley in 1951 and has been performed by dozens of other artists, including Queen of Gospel Albertina Walker, Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash. Get away, Jordan Get away, Jordan Get away, Jordan There's one more river to cross And that's the stream that flows, Thru Bethlehem call the river Jordan. Don't you want to God Almighty… O' my Lord… Get away, Jordan Get away, Jordan Get away, Jordan I want to cross over to see my Lord One of these mornings bright and fair I want to cross over to see my Lord Going to take my wings and fly the air I want to cross over to see my Lord
