Talk about your lost classics. The Mahavishnu Orchestra's 1973 album, Between Nothingness And Eternity, has to be the holy grail. It is only 42 minutes long and contains just three tracks recorded live at the Schaefer Music Festival in Central Park, New York City, New York, over two days in August 1973. In 1974 the album reached forty-one on the Billboard Pop Album charts, but it isn't pop. How many pop albums do you know where the shortest cut is over eight minutes long and longest exceeds twenty-one minutes? In its first incarnation the Mahavishnu Orchestra [...]
Amazon.com Widgets Billy Sherwood, both with Yes and on his recent helming of the Prog Collective, has already established himself as a staunch advocate for the 1970s' signature rock style. So why shouldn't he do the same with 1970s jazz? The forthcoming Sherwood-produced Fusion Syndicate, set for release by Purple Pyramid/Cleopatra on October 16, 2012, recalls all of the genre-busting [...]

We at MetalSucks are smitten with the hard-driving, big-charm debut album from Soilwork singer Bjorn "Speed" Strid and guitarist David Andersson's '70s-inspired hard rock posse The Night Flight Orchestra. Titled Internal Affairs, it's a warmly modern and aurally retro instant classic, a reel of tired departures and hopeful arrivals shot in soft-focus and soundtracked by feel-good [...]
(Photo credit: Chuck Johnson) "Blast Off," the first song released by fusion threesome Trioscapes, impressed the hell outta us when it dropped just two months back. Since then we've been buzzing with excitement, counting down to the May 8th of Separate Realities via Metal Blade. This is different music for metal fans that choose to think [...]

Tuesday night promised to be a four-band bill at the Wonderbox , but when the DIY venue fell through, two bands dropped out. The show was moved last minute to an artist warehouse space off of North Capitol in Bloomingdale, under the guidelines that the two remaining bands ran the show at a respectful volume and mindful hours. The touring band, Cloud Becomes Your Hand , couldn't of been any happier to play early. "One in the morning is a normal time slot to go on when we're on tour," a member of the band expressed. "It's nice [...]

John McLaughlin has just celebrated his 70th birthday. At least I hope he celebrated it, he certainly deserved to. It's saying something when a musician is more famous for the work he did in his own band than he is for playing with Miles Davis on Bitches Brew . The Mahavishnu Orchestra was by no means perfect - at times the gloss sheen of prog can set your teeth on edge - but when they set themselves loose they were magnificent. One Word from the 1972 album Birds of Fire does [...]

Truly unclassifiable in any of today's genres, British beatsmith Om Unit (Jim Coles) has mastered the art of non-discriminatory electronic music. Originally known as a turntablist under the moniker 2tall, Coles has traversed through different periods of music whilst maintaining his signature incorporation of luscious textures and head knocking beats. Ranging all the way from ass-shaking tracks like "Neptune," which was featured on a 2010 Low End Theory podcast, to the instrumental 4/4 grooves of early chicago house found in "The Power of Love," Om Unit's work has diversified his audience. Coles' surging instrumentation and distinguishably exuberant sy nthwork has received appraisal from much [...]

Quite often I get a lot of questions about musical influences. Since this is the LEVI/WERSTLER take over, I figured, what better time to hopefully turn some of you on to a new player than now? So here are a few guys outside of the metal genre that are virtuosic and very extreme with their [...]

I'm exhausted. It's been a long day and a long week, and I am looking forward to a good night of sleep tonight. This week should be a little more laid back than the previous one, and will provide me with opportunities to go out into the world and have some fun. I think. I don't really know. We'll see, I guess. The only thing I know for certain is that today is Sunday, which means I have to compile for you a new mix tape. It's Sunday Mix Tape time! RULES for uninitiated [...]
The Warp debut by Glaswegian Ross Birchard is certainly one of the most interesting albums that 2009 has dropped in our collective laps. Butter is a beautifully chaotic swirl of influences: L.A. glitch-hop, smears of Warp's spacier back catalog, and at its weirdest there's charmed allusions to 1970's prog/experimental masters The Mahavishnu Orchestra. It's a wonderfully experimental affair, something far more worthy of the Warp branding than the label's current top seller Veckatimest . Trying to pick a song to feature here was a bit [...]
On July 14th, 1974 an article by Stoney Brakefield appeared in the Pennsylvania newspaper, NEWS EXTRA, reporting an incident which allegedly took place in 1944 near this small coal mining town, yet because of it's nature it had been covered-up for nearly 40 years until the son of the mining inspector who investigated the incident revealed it as his father (then deceased) had related it to him. This mining inspector and a fellow investigator had been called in to look into a "cave-in" in one of the Dixonville mines. About 15 men had either been killed or [...]

It's Sunday again, and as per usual, nothing exciting is happening anywhere in the world. People sleep late and hope they can relax for a few hours before the new work week begins. Meanwhile, I've reached the exact middle of my own work week, so I'm way closer to my next weekend than you are! Ha! In trying to write an introductory paragraph, I asked Ilya what topic I should pontificiate on. He said "cupcakes," then giggled softly. "Cupcakes are really what's in right now," he said, and giggled some more. Yup, I know what Ilya did all [...]

I had a strenuous day at work, helping to re-price all the jazz LPs in the store. It entailed pulling all the records and lugging them to the back of the store, re-pricing them, and then lugging them back out to the floor and reorganizing them. While that was happening, I had to help one of the girls at the front counter by providing her with $2.99 records that needed to be priced. So I had to lug all those records from back to front and then back again for storage. When full, the LP boxes weigh about 70 pounds, [...]
