I've got no idea when 'No Sell Out', a recently unearthed tune from Common with No I.D. on the boards, was originally made. It would make sense that it was intended for Com's The Dreamer, The Believer ( released last year), but the whole sound of this tune dates back to an earlier time. No's choice of sample might have something to do with the somewhat nostalgic vibe, of course. He flips an old Ike Turner joint that's previously done the rounds on tunes by Main Source and Jurassic 5, [...]
Wednesday, May 30, 2012 The days get longer in Austin as the sun burns higher and brighter over all the kids dreaming and lazing by Barton Springs, Deep Eddy, and every puddle that pops up next to or in a kiddie pool. People bitch about the sun and the heat, but the summer season is the reason we live in Austin. Where else but here would we be able to lounge, lift glasses, and lazy-river the day away without a care for the petty responsibilities that plague other [...]
Oh, are you tired of hearing me wax poetic about how the age of various hip hop-related items and how old this makes me feel? Well if you are, I'll have to apologize in advance, because that is exactly what I'm about to do. Again. Last week it was 3rd Bass' 2nd and final album, Derelicts of Dialect, that was turning the big 2-0 , and now, come to find out, seminal "hip hop" movie Boyz N The Hood is also two decades old. Trailer goes here: [...]
Well I'm enjoying the last day of my rather long holiday hiatus from both my actual job and my un-official job here at the hill. So while I don't have a lot of time for OSM today, I wanted to do the same as I did last year and post a few songs from the year that would be commencing 20 years ago, in this case, 1991, which would put us smack in the middle of what may be the awesomest time for hip hop according to that Ack and I. So [...]
I'm fairly wiped after last week's Halifax Pop Explosion, so I needed an easy OSM topic to ease me into the week. I've already done a couple posts based on some "classic" mixtapes I did ages ago, and so I figured why not go that route again if I could find another mix. Well, I found one entitled Classics II 91-92 , which sounded good to me, so here's the first 5 songs on side A of that mix. The mix opens with a bang: Chuck [...]
Once again we're back on the Old School Tuesday plan, making it back-to-back weeks that our blast of Old School hip hop goodness has been a day delayed, but I'm afraid it couldn't be helped. We had a softball playoff tournament this weekend, and it turns out that when you combine being kind of old with playing 8 softball games in 2 days, you end up kind of sore and pretty much coma-tired. ; So in honour of that softball overload, and because of the fact that the MLB playoffs are looming [...]
For reasons I won't go into here, my father-in-law has been storing many of his surplus possessions at our house for a couple months. Amongst these possessions are three or four large wooden crates filled with vinyl records. Sounds like a pretty awesome scenario, I know, but the majority of the records are classical, which is perfectly fine, just not my bag. There are some pretty awesome treats though: some classic rock (Beatles, Eric Clapton, etc.), and some jazz - including that pretty amazing album right there on the left. Admittedly, [...]
In light of Dj Apt One's post yesterday I've decided to add a few more coals to the fire with one of my favorite barbecue jams by The Main Source entitled "Live At the Barbecue"! Nas is also on this record with one of his many amazing verses "When I was twelve I went to hell for snuffin Jesus" Nas. This is a classic I love more and more every time I hear it. Enjoy! Well now, since I took myself a nice little blog break over the holidays, this is my first opportunity to wish you all the happiest of happy new yearseses. So I shall, and I'll also ease my self back into the posting game with a song-heavy, yet ramble-light OSM featuring some of the better jams from 1990, which is, unless my suspect math skills fail me, 20 years ago now. Hey now, 20 years, that is something. I would have been mid-way through grade 10, and certainly looking awkward whilst sporting some Starter sports-related [...]

Main Source ft. Nas, Akinyele & Joe Fatal - Live At The Barbeque
July 23rd 1991 is a date that may not mean much to the every day man. It really has no relevance if you were to ask the person sitting next to you at the barber shop. However, if you are a true hip hop head it may mean something to you. This is the day that the one and only Nas was unleashed on the world through a single from Main Source's debut album Breaking Atoms . Before this day Nas was somewhat of an unknown. His verse on Live At The Barbecue let it [...]

Fuck Yeah New York. Dope New Videos from Fresh Vetz and Large Pro+Neek the Exotic
I never thought that there would be a day when I'd be surprisingly psyched to hear two dope, no-frills joints out of New York in the same week. But in the wake of all that Jim Jones and Max B nonsense, I guess that's just how it is - like Reks says, "We used to look to New York for what's poppin' - now New York's floppin'". I mean - there's a wealth of interesting nu-underground artists, but as far as that classic shit, I feel like there's still a lull. Anyhow - here go two cuts from [...]
