This is from the fourth album of Montreal's Maljube , entitled La Caverne , released towards the end of 2011. "Listening to La Caverne conjures images of stepping into the cavern with them; it is primal and vast, retro pop magnificence that sounds like edgy comfort from beyond." They have been nominated for a Bucky Award (CBC Radio 3) in the Best Reason to Learn French category. Download Synesthesie [...]

It's that time of the year where everyone does their Best of 2011 list. Took me awhile to get my Best 50 Canadian albums of 2011 going. Here it is, starting with part one of five listings. Starting from #41-50. 41. Extra Happy Ghost!!! - Modern Horses Very lo-fi experimental pop record with a touch of Chad VanGaalen (who recorded and mixed the album) on this record. Listen to Mercy, Mercy and [...]
Tweet Ah, it's time for the annual Top 42 Songs of the Year award (6th edition)! If you've missed the other five, well, I wish you good look as they lay in various states of disrepair around the site . The plan is to have each of the entries from the previous 5 years streaming endlessly for your pleasure, but for the moment you will have to do with the less than exciting text versions. For this year's [...]
Feathers are a group of four girls from Brisbane creating infectious lo-fi dream-pop. While some of their songs are lively and upbeat, a large number are darker and based on harmony rather than rhythm. Hunter's Moon is an album full of different moods and well-executed hooks, not to mention some great vocal performances that are
![Malajube, The Darcys and The Goodluck Assembly @ Ritual [November 10, 2011]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3855552_lg.jpg)
Went to Ritual on November 10, 2011. Playing at the show was: Malajube The Darcys The Goodluck Assembly It was a pretty fun rocking. Despite The Besnard Lakes (who I haven't seen them live yet) had to cancelled to [...]
Malajube - 'Le blizzard' "The band has exhibited a knack for fusing psychedelia, prog- and classic-rock, disco, and new wave into exuberant, easily grasped big-tent indie pop" - Pitchfork "…exalted racket like Broken Social Scene at their poppiest, or Super Furry Animals at their most raucous." - NME Malajube are an indie rock band from [...]

Genero: Indie rock, Pop/Rock.

Yes, Wilco's latest is out this week and that should occupy part of your last week of September, but don't miss other artists we have been indulging in for weeks now that are fresher than warm apple pie. Gem Club , the result of Christoper Barnes' (above) musing and collaborative help from Kristen Drymala (cello) and Ieva Berberian (vocals), comes forth with Breakers . The album has a slow tempo riddled with an angst and charm at the same time. Pianos, strings, lamenting lyrics and a time to hear truth told plainly makes this an [...]
Here are a few MP3s of songs from some of the better albums released this week. 9th Wonder – "One Night" feat. Terrace Martin, Phonte, and Bird and the Midnight Falcons from The Wonder Years. Alessi's Ark – "Maybe I Know" from Time Travel. Youth Lagoon – "July" from The Year of Hibernation. Also, this week sees the Malajube's La Caverne, which was recommended on TWSIS on April 19, released in the US. Download "Synesthésie" (mp3). Also, stream a few more songs. Candy Hearts – "Good Enough" from Everything's Amazing and Nobody's Happy. [...]
California Condors are a blast of west coast flavor. The four-piece tout infectious melodies and memorable lyrical quips containing a bevy of nostalgia, making it hard to stop listening after one song. Their album Calm Carnivore hovers between contemporary indie rock and classic rock influences. The soaring, reverb-filled guitar solos often conjure the feeling of [...]

So the Barr Brothers' story goes that guitarist Brad Barr heard a neighbor, Sarah Page, practicing her harp, learned the melody, knocked on her door and played it for her. Which makes for a nice warm-and-fuzzy — not unlike the Montreal quartet's self-titled debut album (out next week on Secret City Records ). It's bluesy, tool-shed Americana that fools with arrangements and polyrhythms, recalling in parts the Avett Brothers and the Head and the Heart, though both with some darker edges. ||| Download: "Beggar in the Morning" [...]

Photo by Erik Tanner . Montreal crew Malajube hit New York's Lower East Side last night in support of their shadow-pop latest, La Caverne . Now, I took Spanish in high school so I'm just going to assume that is French for "sometimes-dark-mostly-boingy- adorapop." But what do I know? The house got pretty packed, especially for an early show. Singer/guitarist Julien Mineau led the quartet's delivery to earnest new heights. However, it was keyboardist Thomas Augustin who proved himself as most fun to watch. He swayed like a magician's assistant, his body sliced into [...]

With its cobblestone streets, outdoor cafés, and back alley artisans, Quebec City, Canada has long been referred to as "The Paris of North America." But every July, it seems to have more in common with Chicago and Lollapalooza, as its historic downtown core is transformed into one of the world's largest concert venues for the Quebec City Summer Festival . The "Festival d'été," as it's known locally, shares a great deal of similarities with Ottawa Bluesfest and Milwaukee's Summerfest in that big acts are spread out over multiple weeks instead [...]

Are Malajube the Montreal answer to Phoenix ? Ironically, Phoenix is the group from France but Malajube are the group that sings in French (though being from Quebec, that's obviously not that strange). Wonder if they'll ever switch to English lyrics in a bid to cross-over? I didn't understand a word of what they were saying (which, after years of high school and college French and a short stint in Nice even taking some language classes, is truly sad!) but this was a pretty good album! Download Malajube Synesthsie [...]
