Here's my modus operandi: find something I like that no one else has written about and share it with you. It's a pretty hard and fast rule for the site. With exceptions. Malcolm Holcombe is one such exception. See the new record has already been mentioned by The Velvet Rut , 9B , and on Hero Hill but that's not going to stop me. I chose the title track to share since it clearly struck a chord with Holcolmbe and it's also got more of an old timey sound than [...]

Here we are. Another month, another podcast. Can you believe it's been 6 months? Traffic on these is improving a little and that's raised my spirits about doing them...I know I'm supposed to be all about doing them regardless of the amount of people who listen....and I will be, just as soon as the podcast's monthly traffic gets in the same neighborhood as ninebullets.net's daily traffic. That said, let's talk about this month's podcast. The moment I sat down and started mapping out what songs I wanted to play this month I started getting excited. It quickly became [...]
I happened to mention Malcolm Holcombe's name here on The Rut last week purely because I was in the midst of conversation with myself. A conversation, that for whatever reason, I just happened to share with you. It was one of those listening conversations I have with music which begins because the inspiration moves me to do so. A conversation on that particular day that found me sitting alone on a Thursday morning, talking with the words of songwriters coming out of my stereo's speakers. Well that conversation led [...]

There are very few artists that I love enough to check websites/myspace/twitter, hoping for any insight about upcoming releases. Ironically, one of the few people I cyber stalk, is a man that probably could care less about the internet or keeping his fans current. Malcolm Holcombe has been making music for 30+ years with a gravelly voice as worn as the tires on an old rusted out pickup truck and really, nothing about his song writing will ever reach out to a wide audience and I think he's ok with that. Throw in the fact he's [...]
I've still got those aunts in my feet that requiring me to find something else than my alt-country / chamber pop /pseudo-blues stuff. So I won't bother you, I'll do it short... but it you want to move with me, I've just find some delicate tracks that can match our nights... Influenced by Wilson Pickett, Brooklyn-based acoustic soul/folk/rock Benyaro leads by the great voice of Ben Musser released a 9 tracks collection last year that requires my mood attention. Comparisons have been drawn with Ray LaMontagne (hehe), Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (hehehe) ! And they've also had [...]

myspace Malcolm Holcombe 's gruff voice contrasts the beauty of this song, which has more or less become the theme song for the last six months of our life. Nic and I have made sacrifices, taken risks because we wanted to be around our best friends, closer to family, and have a backyard instead of some shit cookie cutter condo we couldn't afford even if we wanted it. Holcombe's last record - Gamblin House - was slept on by way too many people , and [...]
Malcolm Holcombe is pretty much a legend. In the mid-nineties he emerged - already mature -from the mountains of western North Carolina to critical acclaim in country and folk music circles. He has produced a new record every 5 years or so since then, and he's spent time on the road with some prime talent, [...]
I ran into this discussion a while back as how do I know in which bin to look for certain singers. Malcolm Holcombe is one of those. It was suggested a bin be titled Just Music so that's what I'll go with for Malcolm Holcombe. I know he has a Prine sound here, but then he gets into his own and you forget Prine and get caught up with Malcolm and his music. This is from his 2006 album Not Forgotten. [...]

There is something about a voice worn hoarse by countless glasses of brown, smokes and a soul that has been tattered by hardship. That simple, timeless combination gets me every time, but even saying that, Malcolm Holcombe is something special. He's been making music forever, and sadly I'm very new to his songs because I feel like I've missed out on something special. Gamblin' House is about to be released on Echo Mountain records, and after sifting through way too many lists and the December lull, Holcombe's gritty melodies show as much promise [...]

Malcolm Holcombe is one of the underappreciated artists in the roots, folk, Americana, singer-songwriter genre. Sometimes referred to as a "songwriter's songwriter". He will be releasing an album of new material called " Gamblin' House ". The album hits the digital stores on 1/15 and hard copies will be up for sale on 1/28. Roll the dice and take a " gamble " on this one. I guarantee you'll enjoy it. Listen: Malcolm Holcombe ~ Evelyn RIYL: John Prine, Guy Clark [...]

Malcolm Holcombe is a country singer a grumbling voice from Swannanoa, North Carolina, USA. Country is a tricky genre, considered by many as conservative inward looking music where moon and june will rhyme forever and ever... Let's not beat about the bush, it is most of the time. Holcombe's new album Gamblin' House is a breath of fresh air. Sure, it is about going downtown, rocky relationships and all that, but he writes lyrics as good as Tom Waits or Nick Cave. You might not like his stories, you might not like his voice but [...]
I'm a huge fan of Malcolm Holcombe's ( here and here ). I put him in the rarified air of folks like John Prine, Steve Earl, and Joe Ely. He can tell a story with both his lyrical turn of phrase and with his beaten down whiskey and cigarette marred voice. I'm not his only fan though. The new label Echo Mountain (Tyler Ramsay) has signed him and released the new record. The only flaw I can see so far with the release is the record cover; it's got a horribly executed horror [...]

Songs:Illinois is the best mp3 blog on the internet. Sounds a bit conceited, huh? But it's not far from the truth, at least for me. What I've realized (and it's no great light bulb moment) is that the songs I share on Songs:Illinois are the best songs available that fit my particular likes and dislikes. They may be old fashioned to some or at the very least outdated to others and to most just plain irrelevant. But that's not what I hear. And really that's what an mp3 blog should be, shouldn't it? [...]

During my own extended and obscure touring of the folk circuit, I had the distinct pleasure of opening for Malcolm Holcombe at a little place in Birmingham, AL called The Moonlight Music Cafe . That was probably the strangest night of music in which I've ever participated, and one of my most fondly remembered shows in all of my travels. When you meet Malcolm, two things are readily apparent. First, he's lived a hard life of road gigs and anonymous clubs. Second, his mind operates on a plane completely foreign [...]
