Movie of the Week: Malcolm McLaren, Artful Dodger (2010)

Movie of the Week: Malcolm McLaren, Artful Dodger (2010) A lot of people have a lot of things to say about McLaren, and he could talk bollocks with the best of them, but mark my words...one day he'll be acknowledged as a great artist. Hat tip to Glen Friedman

“PUNK: Chaos to Couture” opens at the Metropolitan Museum of Art this Thursday

“PUNK: Chaos to Couture” opens at the Metropolitan Museum of Art this Thursday The Metropolitan Museum of Art 's new book, PUNK: Chaos to Couture , is an LP-sized tome, so I suppose it makes sense I'm listening to The Roxy London WC2 , an LP that compiles many of the early punk bands performing live in their native environment. The LP's a deluxe reissue on Earmark , with 180-gram vinyl, a PVC protective sleeve, and all manner of accoutrements. It's dressing up something that was most likely originally kicked around, beaten up, scratched, and treated poorly in all manner of extras befitting proper art, rather than [...]

#ThursdayThrowback – Malcolm McLaren: Buffalo Gals (Discobody Remix)

#ThursdayThrowback – Malcolm McLaren: Buffalo Gals (Discobody Remix) “All that scratchin' is makin' me itch…” While Malcolm McLaren (1946-2010) visited New York City in 1982 looking for a support act for his then protégée indie-pop group Bow Wow Wow he was exposed for the first time to Hip-Hop. Being the innovator he always was (he discovered and managed Sex Pistols; for many he was the godfather of punk) he immediately felt drawn to the scratching technique and the impressive breakdance moves, both of which he infused in “Buffalo Gals” recording and video respectively. “Buffalo Gals”, a collaboration with a duo of N.Y. Punk Reverance: Derek Jarman's "Jubilee"

by Thomas Michalski Movie - Jubilee (Derek Jarman, 1978) What's on Network Awesome Today? After the release of Derek Jarman ’s  Jubilee in 1978, Vivienne Westwood , outraged at what she saw as a misrepresentation of punk, took to her then preferred medium, the t-shirt, to express her displeasure. The “ Open T-Shirt to Derek Jarman ,” with its [...]

Adam and the Ants: “Antmusic”

Adam and the Ants: “Antmusic” I'm adamant that this is a photo of Adam Ant. One of the more amusing characters to arise at the beginning of the '80s was Adam Ant. Part punk, part glam rock, and a little Elvis Presley, Adam and the Ants were eventually one of the more popular groups to come out of the latter part of the British punk movement transitioning into New Wave, coming up about the same time as Siouxsie and the Banshees and (primarily because Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren stole the original "Ants" away from Adam to help create them) [...]

Devonté Hynes | Blood Orange

Devonté Hynes | Blood Orange New York | London  Hello. My name is Devonte Hynes. I make music under various guises such as Blood Orange , Lightspeed Champion . and sometimes, just under my own name, but that tends to be for more compositional or scoring work.  I grew up in London, which is where I spent the majority of my life up until 5 years ago, when I moved to New York City. Goin’ Old School: Front 242, The System & Malcolm McLaren

The System - You Are In My System
Goin’ Old School isn’t a trip down music memory lane, it’s a mugging in the dark alleyway of nostalgia: OK, so I’m not sure why ‘Headhunter’ hasn’t made Goin’ Old School yet, but it’s time to rectify that. Anton Corbijn directed Front 242 , in their game changing track from 1988. Be crushed by that bassline, it’s literally all reverb (the original sound was removed). Pure ‘80’s Synth Funk here from The System and their 1982 track ‘You [...]

Movie of the Week - Dressing For Pleasure

Pleasure
A rare look at the entire 1977 UK documentary on fetish fashion which includes appearances by Malcolm McLaren, Jordan, and others who were the leaders of the UK punk scene. Some of this footage would later appear in McLaren's The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle . For more, check out this article on the film, and this article on it's maker, John Samson.

Malcolm McLaren – “Carmen”

Malcolm McLaren – “Carmen” malcolm mclaren - "carmen" (download) From Malcolm McLaren's LP Fans , released in 1984. This record was Malcolm's attempt at blending r&b/hip hop with opera. It's your call as to how well he pulled it off. This song isn't for everyone. To be honest, the opera parts tend to get on my nerves, but I love the production overall, and Angie B' s rapping parts go well with Malcolm's music.

A True Puppet Regime

A True Puppet Regime A few days ago when I was pondering Cheerios, I considered that the cereal would be ideal for serving at state functions while entertaining foreign dignitaries. Alas, as I cannot gut a moose, I fear that I have no possible route to high office where I could enact this bold idea. But I think I’d make a fine head of state and I suppose that I could overthrow a current leader and install a puppet regime. Like moose-gutting, leading a coup d’état is not in my skill set. Yet I have an innovative [...]
