Malcolm Middleton - Fuck It, I Love You (Full Time Hobby 2007) Malcolm Middleton - A Brighter Beat / Full Time Hobby In the canon of history's great drinkers - Ulysses S. Grant, Shane MacGowan, Duff from Velvet Revolver, Amy Winehouse - there are two guys that hold a special place of their own for alcoholic artistry. Aidan Moffat and Malcolm Middleton made their name under the Arab Strap moniker throughout the Chemikal Underground by slaying audiences on both sides of the Atlantic with their wry [...]
Who wants to play their part in trying to get one of Scotland's greatest talents to the top of the charts come Xmas time? All of you I'm sure...... On 17th December 2007, Malcolm Middelton will be releasing the final single from what I reckon has been the best album of 2007. It's the jaunty and upbeat tune with the sort of title that Nick Cave and Morrissey wished they had come up with - We're

This song from former Arab Strap guitarist Malcolm Middleton makes me tear up just from the melody of the verses. Throw in the lyrics and you can forget aboot it. Extra cheers for Mr. Middleton for his entry in this year's race to be the #1 single in England on Christmas. On December 17th, he's releasing the single "We're All Going To Die" - the bookmakers have him at 1000 to 1, but I think he's a lock. Malcolm Middleton - Up Late At Night Again [...]

Photo credit: Nardell This weekend, as I was revisiting one of my favourite films of recent years, Je ne suis pas là pour être aimé , it suddenly fell in place with a post I was long planning to make but still struggling with. This French film – roughly translated as Not here to be loved – is about a 51-year-old bailiff who leads a lonely and cheerless life. He seems to have built a wall around himself – never showing his emotions – and given up hope that something valuable [...]

Blowout version. The new Radiohead album is only available at their website , and it's free - or close to it, although you can pay whatever you want for it. The songs are only 160kps, so if that matters to you, wait to buy the actual CD (coming out in January) or spring for the $80 box set (coming out in December). Either way, I'd love to say it's a great new album, but I'm not feeling it yet. There are a few good songs, though, including this one. [...]
...or Poshfest, as I like to call it. Honestly, it was the most middle-class, civillised event I can possibly imagine. Even the toilets remained usable all the way through the weekend. That may sound like I am mocking it, and in a way I am, but myself along with it because you see, I loved this [...]

I have a tendency to complain about things from time to time, and dammit if there aren't several things pissing me off right about now. First of all, the sound isn't working on my primary computer. For this I blame my son, as he has a bad tendency to fiddle with the settings and give himself administrator privileges, thereby wreaking havoc on the old pc (which he denies, of course). He's also responsible for breaking the cd burner, so not only can I not listen to anything while I'm using the computer, I [...]
I don't really read much music magazines these days, because I get pretty much all I need from the internet. But yesterday I bought Plan B magazine for the first time. I've seen it around, but never actually parted with hard cash for it until now. And I'm happy to say it's very good. With big features on MIA, Super Furry Animals, Marnie Stern and Dirty Projectors, plus heaps of other decent features and reviews (including one of Strawberry Jam ), it's a winning combination. The other reason to [...]

Future Conditional «We don't just disappear» 8/10 – Noch mal Piano [...]
I've actually been buying loads of new stuff in recent times, a whole bunch of 7" singles and albums on CD, and sadly haven't really had the time to listen to them far less cast a critical ear and then crochet a few cliches and invite ridicule in the comments sections of TVV. I will endeavour to catch up over the next few weeks, but in the meantime the backlog just grows and grows and grows.

Pretty much what the title says. Full band session, I assume that's Jenny Reeve accompanying on vocals (Check out her band Strike The Colours), and because it's for radio, the second song is simply called 'I Love You'. They don't play 'Death, Love, Depression, Love, Death' which is a shame, because it's one of my songs of the year. But still a fine little selection, and hopefully it'll inspire you to seek out the album. [ download Malcolm Middleton - A Brighter Beat (XFM Session) ] [ download Malcolm Middleton - [...]

It's been a while since we posted, bad old habits have returned. Yes, there was a bit of a gap between gigs for me, almost two weeks, having had not the slightest inclination to follow JustHipper down to London to see a band I'd given up on as far back as 1990. Then the Thursday before last my PC refused to boot up, kept logging off before it had properly logged on, and I approached the Malcolm Middleton gig at the Life Café that evening in a positively foul mood after a monumental and inconsequential bout of PC [...]
I said I was taking a few days off. But the PC has looked a bit sad and lonely in its corner. So here I am just 40 hours after promising myself I'd take a break. The Malcolm Middleton gig last night was awesome. He played 17 tracks, of around half of which were taken from his new LP A Brighter Beat, along with a handful from the 2005 classic Into The Woods, three songs from his debut 5:14
Was it a fact or a myth that the quality of sound on a picture disc was poorer than that on a normal vinyl record? I genuinely don't know... I picked up a copy of a favourite old picture disc on e-bay a month or so back - the double A side of Asylums In Jerusalem/Jacques Derrida by Scritti Politti that came out back in 1982. That's a picture of the picture disc that I've thrown on, and you'll

The day has juxtaposed itself. One minute glorious sunshine and Simpsons' skies, the next, dark clouds shadow the earth and shower it with snow. It's like a meteorological metaphor for Malcolm Middleton . On the surface, his songs appear upbeat, bordering on poppy. But scratch the surface and the lyrical darkness eats away at the soul of them. 'We're All Going To Die' epitomises it completely, opening the set as it does with a skip in it's stride offset by the bleak nature of it's subject matter. And clearly Malcolm himself is in a dark [...]

I posted this a few weeks back on You Can Take The Boy Outta Brooklyn... , but because the album's been in constant rotation on my iPod since I first got ahold of it, I thought it deserved more props, so here it is: My monthly crush is a new, random find: Malcolm Middleton , a Glaswegian singer/songwriter, formerly of Arab Strap. I was poking around the NME's website this week & stumbled upon a review of his new album A Brighter Beat . They described it as "a pop [...]
Vanavond is de nieuwe plaat A Brighter Beat van Malcolm Middleton de 'Smeerplaat' in Oorsmeer . Ik ben op het moment weer even helemaal ondersteboven van een ouder nummer: Devastation (live) You're the only person that can make me feel alone Just withdraw your eyes and you'll hear me start to moan I've never been so lonely as when you're in the next room I hope you come back in here, come back in here soon Had your face [...]
