I took last night off. I fell asleep in front the newest It's Always Sunny at 10, awoke two hours later to zombie-walk into my bed, and just woke up again a few minutes ago. This CMJ business is a lot more tiring than I remember it being. I hope everyone rested up for today, because it's going to be great. It's your last chance to squeeze in all those bands you haven't managed to see yet. I will be running around like a chicken with its head cut off all day for sure. I'm combining today's posts [...]

Thursday night there's not really one place with a line-up of truly stand out bands that I've never seen before. It's probably going to be the running around from place to place the entire night. Still, the Delancey has a pretty great lineup if you're feeling kind of tired. Male Bonding, Bear Hands, Delorean, The Antlers, Yes Giantess (weird electro band, for fans of Passion Pit), and Suckers. The Antlers and Suckers alone would enough for a killer bill, but adding on these other interesting little bands makes this the showcase of the night. Also of note is [...]

CMJ is here once again! With a sigh of simultaneous excitement and premature exhaustion, we begin our festival week. We've outlined some of our most anticipated acts below. Read, listen and then get away from the computer and go see some amazing artists. Pete and the Pirates We put this dynamic and endearing band from Reading, UK under our spotlight a little over a year ago and interviewed them right before their BBC Electric Proms 2008 gig. They've been to SXSW but [...]

A few months ago I wrote about this do it yourself ethos that has begun to flourish in the indie underground over here in the US. Record Labels popping up like dandelions in the spring and bands jumping from label to label with a 7 inch here, an album there and a cassette on another one. Back in March when I wrote that post it didn't seem like there was a similar thing happening over in the UK. Fast forward to now and those dandelion seeds have blown across the Atlantic and are sprouting. Within the [...]
Male Bonding have just signed to Sub Pop. This is pretty much awesome news. To celebrate, they threw an all night warehouse party somewhere in deepest darkest north London. Platform was there to soak up the good vibes and beer sweats.

Probably the best new band to emerge from stateside this year, Mazes are about to release their debut 7" on the Sex Is Disgusting label. They play what is sure to be an amazing night at Smash & Grab with the equally excellent Male Bonding on the 6th August. Mazes - Bowie Knives

this week i also saw (but ran out of time to scrawl here on): vivian girls: love the record on the treasure trove that is in the red, all vaselinesey and ramonesey. live it's louderlouderlouder, distorto rawk from three very nice young instrument swapping ladies. a barely intelligible noise pop version of the shaggs at points. [...]
When they're not busy booking bands like Abe Vigoda, Graffiti Island and Hype Williams for their rad parties, our dudes at Sex beat are knee-deep in cardboard and sellotape, creating lovingly packaged, limited-run albums. They also have the best handwriting we've ever seen. Their new compilation features all those awesome, noisy, DIY bands we go on about, like KASMs, Twin Lion and the mighty Male Bonding, whose contribution we have here. There are only 100 copies of Sexbeat 002 available so grab yours while you can. Tracklisting after the jump...

Fearsome self styled "Shriekbeat" act KASMs are London-based Rachel Mary Callaghan, Gemma Fleet, Scott R. Walker and Rory Brattwell. All four members have been other bands: Rachel was the singer in spazzcore band Sin o the East, along with Rory on guitar; Gemma was in London based grunge-pop band Wolfie; Scott was in an ethnic/improv band called Aum Sahib and Rory was in quite a few bands, the most well known being short-lived NME favorites Test Icicles. During their first year together they have played in New York, Paris, Berlin, Milan and toured the UK with contemporaries Televised [...]
