Last month Death Cab For Cutie returned to the spotlight with "You Are A Tourist," the great first single and video from their forthcoming Codes And Keys . A sunny addition to our spring playlist, it recalls brighter moments of mid-period Cure when it's not channeling "Float On." That's fitting given how Ben Gibbard's got five Cure covers in his live repertoire. In fact I can't remember ever seeing seeing the guy perform without hearing some other band's song in the set. So before we gear up to collectively prematurely evaluate Codes , here's a listen back at [...]
Malvina Reynolds, in today's television saturated culture, is probably best known for her impressively catchy, and suburbia-lambasting track "Little Boxes" from Showtime's Weeds. Yet Reynolds was oh so much more. Reynolds was born in San Francisco in 1900 and didn't actually start playing music until she meet Pete Seeger and company in, ahem, her 40s. She [...]
i'm getting ready to finish up a 2-week break from work here and it occurred to me that not once in that period did i have the slightest desire to update this blog. i guess i still don't, since all i've got is this lazy post with a bunch of songs that remind me of the ways i have been spending my time.... mostly video games. lots of video games... ratchet and clank future: tools of destruction (ps3) mp3: kid tiger - future umbrella mp3: daft punk [...]

Whatever happened to predictability ? The milk man, the paperboy, the evening TV? Or, at least the TV theme song? Not too long ago, it seemed every show on television had its own signature tune, a Pavlovian calling card to lure you towards the set and let you know that Balki was mere moments away from jumping into Cousin Larry's arms or that Boner and Mike would be up to no good as soon as Alan Thicke's crooning gave way to the situational antics. Nowadays, you're lucky to get an atmospheric soundfart to run over the abbreviated opening [...]

Now that my roommate got the Roku hardware from Netflix that steams movies directly on our TV, I'm catching up on all my HBO programming. And one of the shows that I'm currently besotted with is "Weeds." Set in Agrestic, a typical luxury community set in the deserts of the California, it documents a pot dealing mom who's trying to make do in a world of families that try to live out their cookie cutter ideals while in reality, they are all drowning in dysfunction. And what a great theme song to accompany this show [...]
This is a repeat from a long while back. I thought Boxing Day and this song, strangely enough, was the one which came to mind. I'm sure there are traditional songs associated with the day, but I couldn't find any so ... MP3 File yousendit
A little over two years ago we published a feature called Sound Tracks that aimed to highlight some of the most memorable and musical scenes in modern cinematic history with the intention of demonstrating just how important musical scores and soundtracks are to any given film and scene-- some of the most revered scenes wouldn't be as powerful without the music that accompanied the action. We've been planning a follow-up to that feature, a sort of sequel (which will come in due time), but for this feature we took the general idea of Sound Tracks and applied [...]

The songs of Malvina Reynolds inspired a generation to push for justice during an unjust time. Although she didn't start her musical career until she was in her late forties, she was an icon to those who didn't "trust anyone over thirty." Malvina Reynolds was born on August 23, 1900 in San Francisco to Jewish immigrants. At a time when few women went to college, Malvina Reynolds earned her Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees in English at the University of California, Berkey and earned her doctorate there in 1938. Her parents had been socialists [...]
English Version: August 13 is the premiere of 3rd season of Weeds. Just like last season, several musicians will cover the intro song "Little Boxes" original of Malvina Reynolds . You can check in blogs the covers, but not all of them. So, here there are (at the end of the post) the eleven covers from Second Season of Weeds Versión en Español: En Agosto comienza la tercera temporada de [...]

I talked about my enjoyment of Flight Of The Conchords and John From Cincinnati (although last night's episode was off the charts hard to follow), but the show MJ and I are most looking forward to the return of is Weeds . Last season, one of the things I enjoyed most were the opening theme song covers of Malvina Reynold's Little Boxes . We heard from Elvis Costello, Jenny Lewis, Tim DeLaughter of the Polyphonic Spree, Death Cab For Cutie and Regina Spektor among others. This year a variety of [...]

Play it: "Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games" - Of Montreal One thing that the Showtime original series Weeds does very well is end their episodes with a bomb and a great song to take you through the credits. Take last night's episode ( "AKA 'The Plant'" ) - right after her teenage son (Silas) announces that his girlfriend's preggers and they're having the child, Of Montreal 's "Wraith Pinned to [...]

Play it: Weeds Season 1 Stream: Elvis Costello "Little Boxes" ( Weeds theme song) Podcast: Weeds Music 101 The second season of the Showtime original series Weeds premieres tonight, and as an interesting 'gimmick,' they're having the theme song (Malvina Reynolds "Little Boxes") done by different performers for every episode. Tonight's premiere features Elvis Costello [...]
