Friends, Invalids, Basement-dwelling agoraphobics, lend me your ears! It's time for another Sunday Mix Tape, and have I ever got "the goods" for you. You've probably been asking yourselves why I am not posting daily MP3s anymore, or why the treasures from my collector's slum have been few and far between these past few weeks. The reason is, I've been advised to watch what I post in regards to the music I often share here. Cryptic, yes, but I am not really one to test boundaries. So until further notice there might be less music than many of you click [...]

The shows cropped up fast as Memorial day approached, cascading on top of each other like the hairs of a vigorously headbanged coif. Instead of trying to keep pace, I bode my time. Now, feast on these reviews, covering the last couple weeks of heavy, condensed and combined into an omnibus post, richly suffused with the connective tissue of metaphor and theme. For my final "Friday Top Ten" of the year, I always like to write about the news music that has found its way into my possession over the course of the previous 365 days. In 2005, I think I devoted a paragraph to each of my favorite 25 records. Last year, I wrote three-word reviews for my favorite 50 records. This year, I'm upping the stakes, with one all-encapsulating sentence for the best 100 new records. Strap your safety belts on, because this is going to be a very, very long music-related entry. The Top 100 [...]

Named after a heavy strain of clouds, Mammatus work on a duality of being both unmistakably heavy but also aesthetically environmental. The band take the doom fuzz template laid down by fellow Californians Comets on Fire and Residual Echoes and give it a bit of an acid prog reshape. Not a far stretch I know but still the scruffy sorcerers of Mammatus draw on prog's over elaborate past in a most enjoyable way. The songs are long and monolithic, crushing your chest with their weight but at the same time they cool down into spacey atmospherics that bubble into the [...]

Phew. Today was a very long day. It's 5pm, but there is still so much work to be done. I've been out of the house since noon, running errands which brought me to each corner of Essex county. Now that I have a moment to sit and relax before dinner plans and an evening of debauchery, I can prepare my weekly Top Ten for you. Whoever you are. Which record labels do you think are the most consistent solid producers of quality albums? Is there ever an instance in which you have browsed through shelves (or a "used" [...]

True Primes - We Have Won (Locust 2007) True Primes - We Have Won / Locust "Shambolic" is an under-used term in the American language. Of course the British use it properly, it is their language after all. For example: "Liverpool's defense was utterly shambolic on the night". Its all a shambles, a total mess, not really functioning like it should. We get so used to things functioning like way they should. Often times concision becomes too expected in music as well, even supposed surprises fall within the [...]
