Mister Heavenly , some would say, is an unlikely amalgam of musicians. The super group trio consists of Ryan Kattner, better known as Honus Honus of Man Man ; Nick Thorburn, also known as Nick Diamonds of The Unicorns and Islands ; and Joe Plummer, drummer for Modest Mouse . Unlikely or not, with their debut album Out of Love , they are a welcome breath of fresh air to the indie scene. The brilliance of Out of Love is its uniquely wacky combination of frivolity and heartfelt seriousness. This [...]

The quirky supergroup is coming to Bar Pink on September 2 // Follow Owl and Bear on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.

If you haven't had the chance to check out Mister Heavenly (Man Man frontman Honus Honus' side project with Islands' Nick Thorburn), you can listen to and download four tracks recorded with Daytrotter. The songs—from the band's new album Out of Love— are "I Am A Hologram," "Pineapple Girl," "Doom-Wop" and "Your Girl." Though Honus Honus' voice sounds close to breaking, the tracks are pretty faithful renditions of the album versions. Another difference: Michael Cera joined them on bass for these recordings. You can listen to the Daytrotter session here ; our review of Out Of [...]
During their live performances, the highly exuberant NewVillager produce visuals as colorful and memorable as their tightly infectious songs. They're just as successful in the studio. Their full-length debut is a fantastic and compellingly fun release that should propel the Brooklyn duo to dizzying heights.

At its core, Mister Heavenly is about the interplay of inverse forces. The band's debut, Out Of Love , seeks to meld light-footed doo-wop harmonies with burly guitars and creepy lyrics; to wed Ryan Kattner's (of Man Man) unruly circus-romp rock to Nick Thorburn's (of Islands and The Unicorns) bleeping, cavorting electro-pop. The result, like its components, is a little uneven. There are moments when you believe that "doom-wop"—the too-clever moniker coined by the band for its nascent genre—has real potential. There are also moments when the record sounds like an Islands song pasted together piecemeal with [...]
Man Man have a pair of local shows scheduled in support of their newest release, Life Fantastic! Already scheduled to play at the Glass House on Wednesday, Oct. 26, Man Man has added a new date courtesy of FYF Fest...

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars What do you get when you take 1 part Modest Mouse , 1 part Islands/Unicorns , and 1 part Man Man ? Well, the ultimate supergroup in my opinion; you get Mister Heavenly . Out of Love is the name of their first work together, and while the edgier voice of Ryan Kattner might not seem like the best fit for Nic Islands, it's a surprising juxtaposition, leaving listeners with an abundance of solid tracks. [...]

The Unicorns' Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone? was one of my favorite albums of the decade. The quirky pop songs melded with dark lyrics sung by Nick Thorburn held a special place in my indie rock growth. After the band disbanded, Nick's new band Islands had a great debut but the band just never really lived up to what I felt about The Unicorns. Many moons later Nick is now in a band with members of Man Man and Modest Mouse. The new group named Mister Heavenly still resonate a lot of Nick's quirky songwriting [...]
A full stream of the album provided on YouTube via Sub Pop Recs . Mister Heavenly is somewhat of an indie rock supergroup, and I don't care how many times that word has been used thus far to describe this project. Mr. Heavenly features Nick Diamonds of Islands and the Unicorns, Honus Honus of Man Man, and Joe Plummer of Modest Mouse and the Shins. They've all got backgrounds I assumed would clash pretty hard on this new album, Out of Love , but surprisingly, these three dudes blend their influences pretty nicely. Look for [...]
"Super group" trepidations and celebrity bassist appearances aside, I'm pretty enthusiastic about the forthcoming Out of Love , out August 16th on Sub Pop. Amazingly, I have a copy, but have yet to spin it! Mister Heavenly is Nick Thorburn (Islands, The Unicorns), Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse-only the not-very-good We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank ; nobody mentions that) and Ryan Kattner aka Honus Honus (Man Man). More info here . Recorded live to tape at Bear Creek Studio in Woodinville, WA!

The highly-anticipated debut album from indie super-trio Mister Heavenly is set to drop next Tuesday, but right now listeners can head over to Paste to stream Out Of Love in its entirety. The band is comprised of Ryan Kattner of Philly group Man Man, Nick Thorburn of Islands/The Unicorns, and Joe Plummer of Modest Mouse, and has coined the term "doom-wop" to describe their experimental meets oldies sound. They will embark on a tour next week in support of the album, although a Philly date has yet to be announced. [...]

Man Man have announced a headlining run of dates in support of their newest Anti- Records album, Life Fantastic . The tour will begin October 12th on the East Coast as the band work their way westward with shows in Seattle, Sacramento, two stops in Southern California and ending in Honolulu for a performance at the Hallwobaloo Festival.
Man Man, Grandchildren, West Philadelphia Orchestra at the Trocadero in Philadelphia, PA (August 5, 2011).

by BBG Glass Candy @ House of Vans Man Man brought their own big top into town last night (8/4) at House of Vans , complete with balloons, neon, kazoos, $40 long-underwear, and over the top outfits as part of a one-off with Glass Candy and Crystal Antlers. Man Man's live show, which pretty much hasn't changed for as far back as I can remember, is basically a schtick-y circus on stage. And just like [...]

Compiling a list like our recent Best Albums of 2011 (So Far) typically leaves one with two thoughts. The first is: which records that have yet to come out will appear on the year-end list? With one of our favorite artists seemingly announcing a new album every day (Jay-Z & Kanye West, Girls, Active Child, M83, Feist, Pusha T, Dum Dum Girls, St. Vincent ...), the answer is likely: lots of them. The second, more troubling question, is: which albums did we miss? In the 21st century the constant deluge of new music can be overwhelming, [...]
