Lately I've found myself much more interested in instrumental, experimental hip-hop than what's popular in rap. For instance, I've been digging the psychedelic beats and grooves from London via Atlanta musician C Powers , half of the duo Mane Mane . Atlanta-via-London psychedelic beat duo Mane Mane turned some heads last week with their "skinnyscreen" video for "Twnkl Sr," a track from their debut album on AZ contributor Friendship Bracelet 's UUU tapes . This new video for "Just Called 2," directed by Los Angeles' Miko Revereza , employs more traditional dimensions but a similarly kaleidoscopic approach. I made this super cute playlist in iTunes for when I DJ called "NIGHT CRAWLERS", it's the place for jams that aren't exactly party ragers but "get things pumping" in a subtle way. Cool eh? It's surely no coincidence that Christian AIDS have named this track 'Fever', what with it being exactly the sort of song that gets you more than a little hot under the collar. Haunting echoes make way for made-for-the-dancefloor beats that grind and bounce along at lightning speed, disappearing as quickly as they appeared. One glance at the Bandcamp page for Atlanta's Mane Mane tells you this young chap has a new EP out this month entitled 'Skin Fox'. If you like your instrumental hip-hop to have a more thoughtful lean a la Prefuse 73 or Chinese Man then this producer sits squarely up your street. Having said it's akin to Prefuse 73 and the like, there is one marked difference: a balaeric house feel to the echoed melodies and dancing synth lines executed with an almost Eno-meets-Shadow flair.
