After behaving with abominable enthusiasm in May, the Grim Reaper took it comparatively easy in June. The headline death was that of Herb Reed, leader of The Platters, at the age of 83. Reed was the last of the original Platters to leave us, and he was the only of the legions of rotating members to have featured on all official records by The Platters (that is, the incarnations of The Platters that traced their roots to Buck Ram). Reed toured until recently, until poor health laid him low. He died in the knowledge that a federal court [...]
I originally picked up Angel Station by Manfred Mann's Earth Band on vinyl because Kanye West sampled the track, You Are - I Am, for So Appalled on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. I loved how the sample sounded so dark and experimental, so when I found out that it was taken from Angel Station, I had to hunt it down. Most people are only familiar with Blinded by the Light by Manfred Mann's Earth Band, but everything on Angel Station easily trumps that song by a long shot. The way this album flows and constantly references itself throughout is [...]
I have previously posted some German versions of English-language hits sung by the stars of these songs themselves. Here’s a mix of 29 such songs, spanning just over a decade, from 1961-72. The fashion of Anglophone artists to record in various European languages hit overdrive in the mid-’60s. As mainland Europe’s biggest record market, Germany benefited (or not) from that fashion in particular. Some artists just recorded a few songs, often used as b-sides (for example, The Supremes’ German version of Where Did Our Love Go was the flip side of the English-language Moonlight And Kisses). Others recorded [...]

Manfred Mann (born Manfred Sepse Lubowitz, 21 October 1940, Johannesburg, Transvaal, South Africa) is a keyboard player best known as a founding member and namesake of Manfred Mann and Manfred Mann's Earth Band. "World of Mann: The Very Best Of Manfred Mann & Manfred Mann's Earth Band" is a compilation double album / box set spanning the works of both Mannfred Mann, the 60s band, and Manfred Mann's Earth Band. I guess I don't have to post a link to amazon... this is definitely a collection worth buying! Manfred's new album "Rational Anthems" will [...]
Pretty flamingo - Manfred Mann I always thought Manfred Mann were an 802s/902s turn of the decade band. Like Londonbeat or Fine Young Cannibals or Bros. or Right Said Fred. I don't know why. They're English. I got that much right. I just never thought it was English Invasion, that i was twenty-five years off the mark, and that they sang this song. I don't think it's really about a flamingo at all. Birds.

"Steven Shorter, the biggest pop star of his day, is loved by millions; his approval or endorsement can guide the choices and actions of the masses. But, in reality he is a puppet whose popularity is carefully managed by government-backed handlers keen to keep the country's youth under control. Only an act of complete rebellion can set him free. " "Starring Manfred Mann lead singer Paul Jones as Shorter, and iconic Sixties supermodel Jean Shrimpton as the girl who tries to help him defy the system, Privilege is the third feature from provocative British director [...]

10 Classic Rock Songs We Never Want to Hear Again
Despite what the manic Derek and the Dominos fans who apparently frequent our comments section appear to think, we don't set out to be deliberately iconoclastic here at Flavorpill. We have a healthy respect for the past — we just occasionally get sick of hearing about it, especially when it's depicted as some sort of glowing cultural golden age that the present can never hope to rival. That said, there are certain aspects of rock 'n' roll history that we rather wish could be expunged once and for all, for a variety of reasons. So to start with, here [...]

It doesn't beat the Dylan version, but it is a cool take on a great song nonetheless.
Live From The Cavern Club 1965: Gene Vincent, Sandie Shaw, Manfred Mann, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Petula Clark
Some amazing rare footage from French TV. The last 24 minutes or so of the March 31st episode of the French TV show "Age Tendre et Tetes de Bois" features live footage from the Cavern Club in Liverpool. It starts out with a little "News" feature on The Beatles and Beatlemania that is very cool as well. Gene Vincent - "What'd I Say", "Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On" Petula Clark - Introductions Sandie Shaw - "Girl Don't Come" (English & French) Manfred Mann - "Watermelon Man", "Do Wah Diddy" Petula Clark - "Viens Avec Moi" [...]
