No one buys albums anymore, goes the music industry truism. And yet, for all that the format's commercial viability may or may not be on the wane, sitting and listening to a great album from start to finish is one of the greatest pleasures that music can bring. Flavorwire recently got to thinking about how one might build a record collection if you really only did buy one record a year. So here's the result of our thought exercise: 50 albums you really should own, one a year from 1963 until the present day. Yes, of course this mean things [...]

Following their release of tenth studio album Postcards from a Young Man back in 2010, the Manic Street Preachers are reportedly working on not one, but two new records. Speaking to reporters at the Ivor Novello Awards last Thursday, singer James Dean Bradfield said: "We've virtually finished the first, which is acoustic... [it] has a soul vibe, with Rolling Stones-style horns. The first single is very positive, but there are darker moments too." Bradfield continued to reveal that both Cate Le [...]
Plus, there's a bit of an "Elvis vibe" for the first single, says James Dean Bradfield...
Being asked what's your favourite album is like being asked to pick you favourite child...both impossible and it changes every day. Influential album is another thing altogether. What does that actually entail or mean? In some respects the very first music you hear has got to be the most influential as it drives you forward in your search for more. By Martyn Coppack
Cometh the hype, cometh the backlash. Like a lot of the music press, Flavorwire has been enthusing over London four-piece Savages ever since they emerged last year. Out this week, their debut album, Silence Yourself , delivers on the promise of their first singles and killer live show . But with the release of that album, a counter-narrative is emerging, especially in their native UK. It stems largely from the sort of contrarians who haunt Internet comment sections (and celebrity Twitter feeds ), but also appears in the occasional [...]
The band will play Down Under at the same time as the British and Irish Lions' games...

A rare full-length documentary about Manic Street Preachers ' influential debut album Generation Terrorists is set to air at Hackney Picture House next month. Culture, Alienation, Boredom and Despair , shot by filmmaker Kieran Evans and Manics collaborator Robin Turner, will feature at the second Heavenly Films Night at the East London venue. The event will also screen five of the band's best promo videos, as personally selected by bassist and lyricist Nicky Wire. It'll take place on 2 May, starting at 6.45pm. [...]
Right from the very moment I first heard The Holy Bible , I've found myself irrevocably hooked on static-addled vocal samples suffused throughout grinding rock tracks and this from San Antonio, Texas three-piece The Mites is precisely that. The instant standout from an EP entitled Spur of the Summer , Soma Holiday is as irritably restive as it is irresistibly schizophrenic: it begins the epitome of how I'd envisage their targeted kissable, grade-A, lo-fi drip-pop for the sensuous soul to sound, before slogging itself into the ground with Hole-like squalls of rambunctious guitar and that same semi-permeable [...]

We spent yesterday thinking seriously about the role of gender in Shaking the Habitual , the fantastic new album by The Knife. Today, we thought we'd revisit the same topic in a rather more lighthearted way: by looking at some of music's more memorable gender-defying fashion statements over the years. Androgyny and ambiguity have long been part of popular music, after all, and they've been responsible for some of its most memorable imagery. From The Knife to Grace Jones and a certain remarkable German countertenor, here are some of the best. [...]

This film has been in an attic for twenty years and has only just been unearthed. The Manic Street Preachers is the only visual recording of The Buzz Club where Jo Bartlett and Danny Hagan promoted such indie legends as Blur, The Stone Roses, Suede, Primal Scream and many more. Recorded when the Manics played there on Saturday 16th February 1991, the band were on tour to promote their ' Motown Junk ' single released on Heavenly Records. [...]

Manic Street Preachers have revealed they've been working on their eleventh full-length in the same studio that David Bowie recorded his classic album Heroes . The Welsh band were housed in Berlin during January recording their follow-up to 20102s Postcards from a Young Man . They've also revealed they are working with Alex Silva, one of the engineers on their most beloved record The Holy Bible . Speaking to Lauren Laverne on BBC 6 Music a few weeks back, frontman [...]
The ever-so-ambient Irresistible Force and the rather rockier Manic Street Preachers. At #28, we have Mixmaster Morris in his Irresistible Force guise. He will return later. Frankly, there are loads of tracks you could choose. But I ended up with Nepalese Bliss (1998). There's something wonderfully stoned about the track and the slow piano line. I've no idea where the samples come from: Hey kids. Come here a minute. I got a good thing for you. A black tarry hashish with white streaks of opium ash running through it. Something [...]

I've previously confessed to having an admiration for Manic Street Preachers rather than any undying devotion to them. I've none of their albums in the collection, though I've a handful of singles, many of which were picked up at quite cheap prices, either on the week they went on sale as the record company made a push for a high chart position or many weeks later when the single was no longer in the charts and the music was available in a bargain bin. I honestly can't [...]
We're super excited about the return of Suede, both because their new single "Barriers" is really great and because, honestly, we're hoping for some sort of glam re-revival in the year to come — surely it's time for the return of bands whose ambitions extend beyond bedroom laptoptronica and/or determinedly anonymous we-just-do-what-we-do-and-poss ibly-have-beards indie? Hey, David Bowie's surprise album announcement certainly can't hurt the possibility of a glitter resurgence, either! While we wait, we've been digging out our old Suede CDs and also exhuming other examples of glam rock from after the genre's mid-'70s golden age. Here are some of [...]
11. Manic Street Preachers - From Despair To Where Here's what Richey Edwards told the Melody Maker about this track: In the Western world, living conditions really aren't that bad. Most people have somewhere to live and enough to eat - and yet most people are unhappy. I don't think many people ever come home at night thinking 'What a great day that was!' And that's why totalitarianism will always be tempting - because a fascist leader can say 'I'll make all your decisions for you. You don't need to have any responsibilities. I'll [...]

Here's part two of my gig-crazy summer trip this year. I left you off where we staggered away from Pulp's gig at Wireless only two days into our trip. The next day, after an afternoon at the Tate Britain, we headed off to see Lou Reed at the Hammersmith Apollo. I'm sure there are people out there who will tell us "I told you so." Yes, Lou Reed is a notorious curmudgeon. Yes, he's made some very unfavourable career moves. While it was special to see a legend I never thought I'd see in my life, he [...]
