By Andy O'Connor (TX)Spring Break is over, guys. Time to get back to class. Now that SXSW 2012 is done, we're counting down the days until the next one. I mean, we're looking forward to Fall Break (Fun Fun Fun Fest), Summer Break (Chaos in Tejas), and Senior Skip Day (Rites of Darkness IV?), but SXSW is such a distinctive animal that no other music fest compares to it. It's overstuffed, yes, and
Ever since the dawn of the nuclear age, mankind has been fascinated with The Bomb and its terrifying capabilities. Even before The Manhattan Project bore fruit, countless nuke-themed songs, movies, books, and of course, good ol' propaganda flooded the American consciousness and captivated our over-reactive imaginations. Some truly masterful books (Level 7, Alas, Babylon, A [...]
by ill? ya! (NYC) Highest on my list this week are the two Monarch!/Bloody Panda shows. Monarch! - from France - play dark, ritualistic funeral doom. Bloody Panda are similar in style, but throw in an unsettling layer of chanting/shrieking in Japanese, courtesy of Yoshiko Ohara, sometimes also backed by throat singing. Their shows come close to a religious experience - don't miss it! Saturday
by ill? ya! (NYC) Smoke a blunt, down a six pack and head over to Union Pool tonight for a long, slow evening of bluesy stoner rock, courtesy of the TeePee Records showcase. We ended up seeing Deadboy and the Elephantmen play in Lafayette, and after the show we ended up going back to this apartment party with the band and everybody else and having this big jam session...
[ MP3 ] Man's Gin - Smiling Dogs
