Stuarto and I talked a lot just before my show began and in the minutes after it started about the radio station he's been building at his house. He's dubbing it 1020Radio, and you can check out the (right now) super minimalist site he's running over at 1020Radio.net . You can also find it on Facebook . It's been a long time coming; the station is nearing completion and just about to hit the Internets. All goes well, and time permitting, [...]

I fixed my tail light. It was a simple matter of checking the fuses, noting that the 8A fuse was blown, and swapping it out. Still having issues with the front indicator and running light, but thanks to the good folk at BMW 2002 FAQ, I should have it figured out in the near future. On to the show. Tonight's show was all about current favorites. I played a few tracks discovered within the last week, and several that have been in heavy rotation on my personal playlist of late. [...]

An all-too-long hiatus has finally ended for local rockers The Mantles . After playing Oakland's 1-2-3-4 Go! Records on January 28th, they return to San Francisco this Saturday, February 11th at Engine Works (9pm, $5). Presented by Positive Destruction , the show also features sets by Pamela (celebrating their EP release) and Rat Columns . Chasms is no longer on the bill. Significant time off has paved the way for new Mantles material, as they reportedly [...]

It's hard to imagine that just a few short months ago we were enjoying sunny summer days. 2011 was my best year yet, having achieved a few milestones: four and a half years running FensePost, riding my bike from Seattle to Portland and logging over 1,000 total on those two wheels between January and December, enjoying life with the love of my life (Andi), and a few defining mindset changes that put the two of us on a path to minimalism and frugality. All of this has led to happiness. That the [...]

The 7-inch single has been around since 1949. That's 62 years and counting! In my humble opinion the 7-inch single is still the essence, pinnacle and acme of pop perfection. Optimally, it's one song, one side (Some try to squeeze on more). That's no room for screwing up. You always hear that releasing a 7-inch is a money losing proposition, but that thankfully, doesn't keep pop geeks from doing it. In honor of true blue pop geek vinyl junkies out there, here is the second installment of the annual Finest Kiss top 40 7-inch singles countdown. [...]

Mixtape: Music to Drink Beer to (Podcast #261) Think of our latest mixtape as something of an hour-long indie music/beer pairing, inspired by our upcoming The Bay Brewed rock and roll beer festival. On Saturday, December 3rd, we'll be at The Verdi Club , for performances by Weekend , Sleepy Sun , Extra Classic , and Terry Malts , and unlimited local craft beer samplings from 21st Amendment , Anchor Steam , Beach Chalet , Drake's Brewing , Lagunitas [...]

I often find at the end of the year everybody sits back and reflects on the musical seasons the year's been through, and I also find that a lot of the most interesting and promising music trickles down to this latter part of the year. Bands and producers alike have been sitting on things they've been cooking for a while, and decide it's the right time to tease us with what's ahead. Dam Mantle recently put out this fantastically executed electronic pastiche, and I find myself really intrigued with where 2012 will bring us. He [...]

Dam Mantle released the gloriously textured and somewhat disquieting slice of electronica in the form of the We EP over the summer, echoing contemporaries of modern British cut-up kings Gold Panda, Seams et al. Five months on and in moodier and more-suited winter-climes, Tom Marshallsay (the anti-moniker) last night boshed a new track on Soundcloud, 'Spirit'. The headline is that it's a fair old departure from previous work, a smoother and less cluttered affair aside from the jazz-influenced percussion loop, prone to odd bouts of craziness. Not [...]
Solid Steel Radio Show 4/11/2011 Part 3 + 4 - Deco Child + Dam Mantle by Ninja Tune In hour 2 it's a mix from Deco Child, who has an EP out on Ninja Tune next year and delivers a mix, kicking off with moombahton flavours from Dave Nada, Dillon Francis and Diplo, and moves onto music from Falty DL, Blawan and tracks from his upcoming EP. Dam Mantle takes over the helm for the last half hour and it's straight in with a few of his own productions and [...]

I figured with my previous show being devoted to songs that remind me of sleep, this one would be the opposite. After a few bouts of standard indie rock, things got thick and loud. A shout out to my buddy Brett, for tuning in from Sedro-Woolley. Next time I'll have to add Tullycraft to the list in honor of how we met. The show began with a song off one of my desert island top 5 albums, and ended with a track that's nearly thirty years old. [...]

That guy in the middle really spooks me out.... So, we have big band versions of Thirteen Women and Witch Doctor , we have Jim Nesbitt's The Friendly Undertaker , we have Ferrante and Teicher playing Ritual Fire Dance , we have Guy Lombardo doing Willie Nelson's Crazy , we have a jazzy instrumental by Bobby Gimby called Ghostin ', and we have a better-sounding rip of Beatrice Kay's 1947 Hooray, Hooray, I'm Goin' Away , taken from a Harmony label LP issue. You can't go wrong [...]
