![Maps & Atlases [Show Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4286991_lg.jpg)
As the sun went down on a beautiful Friday in Cambridge, the instagram loving types lined the outside of the Middle East Downstairs where Maps & Atlases would once again grace the stage. Regardless of whether it was their first time or fifth time seeing them, the crowd oozed with anticipation. The first act was Sister Crayon, a trip-hop, electronic act fronted by undeniably talented Terra Lopez and her longtime band member, Dani Fernandez. They started off their set with a very beat heavy tune accompanied with nothing less than soaring vocals made of pure audio velvet, if [...]

Frank Yang If anyone were to ask - and really they're not - this long weekend jaunt to New York was most definitely not a music trip. It was a shopping/eating/visiting/just getting out of Toronto trip, yes, but not a "music" trip as so many of my getaways tend to be. So that I ended up at shows the first two nights I was in town was purely mostly coincidence. I mean, I hadn't even thought about Denver's Dressy Bessy in the better part of a decade. I saw them at The [...]
![JACK WHITE, ALABAMA SHAKES, HOORAY FOR EARTH [SUGGESTED NYC CONCERT]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4281840_lg.jpg)
Photo source: Facebook While this week isn't quite as promising as the last few have been in the world of live music in New York, visits from Jack White , Alabama Shakes , Hooray For Earth , and Great Elk , just to name a few, are reason enough to plan a night out. And if you're looking for a sample of New York's best up-and-coming artists, make sure to check out The Deli's "Best Emerging Artists Fest 20123 aka "N.Y.C. B.E.A.F." featuring Zambri [...]
Maps & Atlases recently released their glorious second full-length offering, Beware and Be Grateful , last month. They also recently made a stop off in the UK to promote the LP and whilst here they stopped over in Manchester, more specifically a Gallery in which you could spend far too much money on rare gig posters. Trust me, I've done it. The band performed a selection of tracks including "Fever", "Winter" and "Pigeon". If you jump on over to Manchester Scenewipe you can enjoy the latter two with "Fever" being up for your enjoyment above.

Maps & Atlases new album, Beware and Be Grateful , gets better with more repetition. At a first listen, the record stands precariously close to being sonically overwhelming. The diverse, unconventional sounds—looped vocals, shimmering synths and intermittent piano work—collide head on with the band's traditional set of instruments. However, after multiple journeys through, the listener starts to parse the music's diverse elements, and can appreciate the multilayered and loaded tracks that comprise Beware and Be Grateful . Just as infectious as they [...]
Remote and Dark Years, de eerste single van de net verschenen Maps & Atlases plaat Beware and Be Grateful heeft een video gekregen.
It's a week of homecomings and record release shows for some local bands. Kicking things off tonight (Tuesday), soft-pop group the Hudson Branch plays a record release show at Lincoln Hall for the new album World Kid. The quirky Maps & Atlases , supporting its second album, Remote & Dark Years , headlines Metro Friday. Finally, soul and R&B revivalists the Right Now , a band I really like, will play its own record release show Saturday [...]
Click here to view the embedded video. Over the last couple of years I've become a fan of Maps & Atlases, I really enjoy what they are doing, how they've expanded the math rock genre and found themselves a perfect sonic space. They've recently released a new record ( Beware And Be Grateful ) and are touring like maniacs. Check out their video for single "Remote & Dark Years." Tour: 5/11 Chicago, IL - Metro 5/12 St Louis, MO - Firebird [...]
"Remote & Dark Years" by Maps & Atlases , off their sophomore full-length Beware & Be Grateful , out now (via Barsuk).

Maps & Atlases - Silver Self Maps & Atlases - Old And Gray Alright, let's get this right out of the way; Beware And Be Grateful and Perch Patchwork have moved Chicago's Maps & Atlases towards more of a pop angle, and away from their original math-rock roots. In come the battery-powered Casio keyboards and out goes a bit of that free-form jazziness. The real strength of this band, for this listener, has always been the vocals [...]

The arc of Maps & Atlases' musical evolution is something one can only describe as "drastic." A series of initial EPs sounded like your average math rock band. That is to say: niche. Very good, to be sure. But listenable to a certain sub-section of a sub-section of music fan. Then came their first full-length album, Perch Patchwork , where the math-rock sound was tempered, though not extinguished, by the band's newfound pop sensibilities. Keeping that arc in mind, Beware and Be Grateful , the band's newest release, paints a picture of where the [...]

I've been following Maps & Atlases casually for a number of years; I've generally enjoyed their music and they put on a hell of a live show, but even still, their lastest album Beware and Be Grateful snuck up and completely took me surprise. The band has always very skilled in the technical arena, with their noodling math-rock guitar lines and energetic drum fills, but their songwriting has grown by leaps and bounds on their new material. First single, "Winter" is a great example, an exhilarating slice of guitar pop that's sunny melodies and tight rhythms [...]
