We featured Maps & Atlases back in 2008 when the Chicago group started turning heads with the You and Me and the Mountain EP . With an album set for launch in a few weeks (April 16), it's time to revisit their work and get in on their latest single, "Fever," which we're pretty thrilled about. The foursome of Shiraz Dada, David Davison, Erin Elders, and Chris Hainey provides a rhythm through the lyrics of Davison, yet the spiritualistic, experimental instruments get funky, folky and downright groovy. Don't expect heavy bass chords [...]

Maps & Atlases last album, Perch Patchwork , saw the Chicago quartet embrace their once-dormant pop sensibilities. Long touted for their mathematically-intricate musicianship, tracks like "Solid Ground" and "Israeli Caves" saw the band blend angular guitar and drum beats with gorgeous melodies. Today the Barsuk signees released "Fever," the first taste of their upcoming record, Beware & Be Grateful . The track continues down the same path as Perch Patchwork , replacing impressive bouts of finger-tapping with bright synths and a bouncy drumbeat. [...]

We all know how Metal Finland is - there's a whole blog dedicated to Metal From Finland , after all - but now there is statistical evidence that Finland is more metal than any other country on this planet. Finland is definitely the deepest shade of red. Norway is still an orangey-red. Sweden and Iceland are the next and they're both orange. The Nordic countries really are metal. Well done, Nordic countries. (Apart from Denmark, you not-so-metal country, you). [This map [...]

In 1995, legendary Batman artist Dick Sprang created a large format (27″ by 35″) lithograph, "The Secrets of the Batcave". This numbered print was sold by Gotham Graphics and limited to only 500 copies, and is an incredibly detailed depiction of the Batcave and its many secrets. Long out of print, the poster features a detailed map of Batman's base of operations. Batman, Robin and Alfred are pictured in lower right corner overlooking the cave and the most prominent members of the Dark Knight's rouge's gallery from the 1940′s and 1950′s are prominently featured. What would it look like if modern mapping technology still relied on a handrawn look? Stamen Design overlaid watercolor textures on OpenStreetMap map tiles and the effect does indeed add "warm pop" to the maps. The Watercolor mapping project was inspired by the Bicycle Portraits project . It's fun to peak at various cities. Though at the moment the site is acting a bit wonky. Above is Portland, Ore. For those of you who don't know about MAP, it's a collection of music blogs from around the world who band together once a month to shed light on up-and-comers from their home countries. For the third MAP of 2012, we're excited to share one of the year's best track from a new favorite: Hundred Waters. UNITED STATES : I Guess I'm [...]

Earlier this Year, I was contacted by Matthew Pollesel, the man behind long-running Canadian music blog i(heart)music . Matt had decided to give blogging a rest, and in doing so was looking for someone to take over the Canadian leg of the Music Alliance Pact (MAP), a monthly jaunt around the musical globe featuring contributions from bloggers all over the world, who put together a collective post featuring their favourite new music from home. I was honoured to be asked, and proud to join the MAP ranks. Today's marks my initial contribution, and MAP's debut outing on Quick Before [...]

SINGAPORE : I'm Waking Up To... Shelves - Star Alright The much-anticipated debut album by Shelves was released this month on both vinyl and digital , resurrecting not just the choicest cuts of Britpop and college rock, but the very essence of the 90s Singapore scene. Yet the record sounds anything but dated, with its clever balance of crisp melodies and generous distortion pointing the way forward for indie rock today. That vision [...]

Photo by Lucia Holm Photography Today's song is "Maps" by The Front Bottoms . The NJ duo is comprised of Brian Sella (vocals, guitars) and Mathew Uychich (drums, bullhorn).
