The day is cloudy and windy but quite warm, 61°. Those leaves I mentioned that were hanging on the oak tree are now on my deck. Every time I look out the window, I see more of them fall, victims of the wind. If I hadn't been outside earlier, I would have thought it was cold. The day has that look about it. When I was in elementary school, I loved geography class. Our books were filled with all sorts of information about each country and had the most wonderful pictures of faraway places. I still remember the [...]

SINGAPORE : I'm Waking Up To... Magus - Riders On Psychedelics Magus is a new collaboration between Mark Dolmont and Leslie Low, the latter best known for his work with Humpback Oak and The Observatory. Their debut effort is fittingly the first release by Ujikaji Records , a new independent label and distro focusing on experimental music in the region. The album, titled Sun Worshipper, presents a dark and spiritual brew of kraut-inspired [...]

As ACL pointed out this morning, the new Schoolhouse Electric & Supply Co . website launched today. If you're like me, you're probably going to end up ordering their USA Topo Map by the end of the day for $40. Though I've been lucky enough to be traveling back and forth from Oregon these last few months, I don't know if I'm quite ready to post a map of that wonderful state on the walls of my [...]

Bostonography compiled a cool looking map, gleaned from NextBus, of one day's bus activity in the MBTA system . It shows a bit more than 24 hours' worth of bus location data from last Friday, November 4, with colored lines representing the speed of each vehicle. Red indicates speeds less than 10 miles per hour, yellow is 10–25 mph, and blue is faster than 25 mph. It's drawn from 2,058,574 data points in all. The concept is totally lifted from Eric Fischer , who really is the master of mapping all things geotagged [...]

Good old Pitchfork pointed me out to Olympia based four-piece Milk Music . The band is to be located somwhere in the grungy spheres between Dinosaur Jr. and the Meat Puppets . They haven't released anything so far, except for a mostly unnoticed 6 song LP called Beyond Living last year. I wonder how it could happen, that this band didn't get more attention, especially in the course of the big Yuck and 90ies-rock hype. Below I'll give you some songs off their only [...]

Thomson, a UK-based travel company, recently made a smart marketing move by posting an infographic on its blog titled "How Music Travels – The Evolution of Western Dance Music". Drawing from multiple sources, it's meant less to be a definitive statement than it is to be a conversation starter. It's also received plenty of media coverage and looks like a big success as an attention getter. How Music Travels – The Evolution of Western Dance Music [...]

simple but brilliant way to catch up with the evolution of western dance music the map follows music from jazz and blues right through funk, hip hop, house and techno to the various genres that exist today click image to open interactive version [via Thomson Holidays ]
"Hey, any fool can write a hit," Thomas Dolby half-jokes on A Map of the Floating City , his first album in almost two decades. Maybe so, but that's no reason to dismiss this one. Let this be an inspiration to future one-hit wonders. Dolby, best known to Americans for his 1982 single "She Blinded Me With Science", could have fallen to the same fate as many of his peers – eking out a career, decade after decade, to increasingly smaller audiences at casinos and state fairs, succumbing to painkillers or [...]
After a two-decade absence, Thomas Dolby emerges with what may be the album of his career. It's been two decades since Thomas Dolby last graced us with an album. Truthfully, it's been hard to claim that we've missed him. His hits "She Blinded Me With Science" and "Hyperactive" have hardly faded from our consciousness since they first emerged in the 1980s. His two best albums, 1982's The Golden Age of Wireless and 1984's The Flat Earth, have continue to resonate and attract their share of new fans in the years since...

For those of you who don't know about MAP, it's a collection of music blogs from around the world who band together once a month to shed light on up-and-comers from their home countries. It's sort of like the WTO without the human rights violations. After the jump you'll find music from 35 nations spanning the globe. This October we decided to highlight one of our favorite tracks from Young Man's latest record Ideas of Distance . If you like melodies and influences of George Harrison, you better spin the track below. [...]

It's hard to believe but it's been a year and a half since Circa Survive released their major label debut Blue Sky Noise on Atlantic Records. In those 18 months, the band played several festivals including Bonnaroo and Coachella as well as toured with Anberlin and Coheed & Cambria. For the past month, the band has been on yet another headline tour (bringing Maps & Atlases, States and Sleeper Agent for this round). The tour wraps up this week...

Map theme - Kenji Yamamoto youtube= http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =27fUegv-HK8 I think this is to remind myself that i still haven't finished this game. I was so close but collecting everything, the game's difficulty and the nudging feeling that i'm wasting my life playing video games means it has remained untouched, gathering dust under the TV for months. With all the free alone time i have now i could probably do well to finish it. What else is there to do? I would be so out of practice.

Evelinn Trouble - Switzerland's MAP representative this month Every month, MAP (Music Alliance Pact) asks a large number of music bloggers across the world to pick a track to represent their country. The results are posted on all of those blogs on the 15th of each month, downloadable in one file or playable one by one on each blog. Ireland is represented by Tieranniesaur and a download of their song 'In The Sargasso'. Click the play button icon to listen [...]

The dusty desert highway of Tuscon-native band Calexico's 15-year career is dotted with a notable collection of passionate Latin infused Americana (for lack of another general category to place them). While the band may not be familiar to most, their music shows up in many places- from interstitial music in NPR to movie soundtracks and in their many collaborations (including one fantastic album with The Iron and Wine ). If only for these works, Calexico will stand as one of the important and influential American bands. Along this [...]
