In 1997 locals, Tommy Conwell, John Flynn, Philly Gumbo, and others contributed to Season's Greetings Philadelphia , an 18-song compilation of local musicians recording original Christmas songs. The collection was released on the local Record Cellar Records label. Below, stream a few songs from the album including "Psychedelic Santa" by Buzz Zeemer; "A Beer In A Bar" by Marah and "Any Other Day" by Cory (Stargazer Lily). It was a modest but passionate crowd that showed up at the Rhythm Room Monday night for New Jersey's Titus Andronicus . The passion manifested itself early, as the group launched into "No Future Part Three: Escape From No Future". When the drums kicked in, the crowd near the front of the stage erupted in a mosh frenzy, knocking around and into us, and making it clear this was gonna be a high energy show. Frontman Patrick Stickles commented often on the positive punk vibe, and he and his band did not let up [...]
Marah has been laying low since dropping Life Is A Problem last year and traipsing the world bringing their brand of rock-n-roll salvation to the people. Apparently, Dave and Christine spent their Christmas vacation making videos. It doesn't look that hard. Apparently, once you get the goat and the colonially-decorated bathroom, the rest is gravy. MP3 : Marah - Valley Farm Song Hell, as long as we're doing this, help yourself to the band's last video, Within The Sagging [...]
Photo by Hannah Torresson Well, here's something you don't see every day: A rock band plays a lousy show (OK, that does happen every day), gets called out in the local press (which happens pretty often), and then responds to the critic (which happens much more often than you'd think). But here's the unusual part: Instead of complaining to the reviewer about how he/she doesn't understand the complexities of their awe-inspiring, genre-defying music, or whining about how the venue's sound guy didn't put enough vocals in the monitors, the members of Marah [...]
Marah —one of the more sincere, rowdy and exciting roots-rock bands of the past 15 or so years—released their 10th album last month, Life Is A Problem . Usually comprised of brothers Serge and Dave Beilanko, it's the younger Dave alone that leads the band's ragged old-time, Replacements-esque charge here. And as always, he proves to be up to the task, producing perhaps the band's best effort since 2005's If You Didn't Laugh, You'd Cry . Marah - "Within The Spirit Sagging" (from Life Is A [...]
Photo by Andre Allegre My Old Kentucky Blog recently shared the title track to Marah's best and most exciting album in a decade, Life Is A Problem . The song is a raw, banjo & electric-guitar driven mini-epic inspired by an old blues song of the same name by Sister Ola Mae Terrell. It's the perfect introduction to the promising new phase Philly's perennial underdogs have entered with this record. In addition to the previous digital release, Life Is A Problem is now also [...]
A few weeks ago we detailed the musical emancipation of rock-n-roll's ultimate underdogs, Marah . The new record, Life Is A Problem , is making critics sit up on their hinders and take notice, and if the band's evil plot comes to fruition, kids around the globe will be begging Ded Moroz for a double-cassette boombox this December. And after spending the early weeks of summer razing roadhouses throughout the Midwest, the kids from Philly are taking a breather before laying siege to the [...]
For the sporadically great, occasionally frustrating Marah , drama has been as much a part of the Philly band's repertoire over the past 12 years as their lyrical references to the City of Brotherly Love. After the one-two punch of 1998's Let's Cut The Crap And Hook Up Later On Tonight and 2000's epochal Kids In Philly , Marah seemed like a band with limitless potential, but for a variety of reasons (questionable stylistic decisions and inter-band squabbling most prominent), they have struggled over the ensuing years to build upon those early successes. After the unexpected [...]
Marah's Kids In Philly is one of those records I wish I could hear again for the very first time. As much as I dug The Replacements, Marah's world of Mummers, pizzelles, and Pete Rose-worship spoke a little louder to this East Coast refugee who somehow found himself stuck in the middle. As a result, I've pretty much spent the last decade devouring each new Marah record, telling anyone who would listen why the band was a national treasure and patiently waiting their commercial breakthrough. And waiting. And waiting. [...]
There are certain bands out there that have made such a profound impression on me at some point in my life that I will be following (and supporting) anything they do for the rest of their career - or my life - whichever comes first. Marah is one of those bands. Ten years ago, when I first watched front man David Bielanko strap on a banjo and launch into "Faraway You" (opening for Steve Earle at Hollywood's House of Blues), I was drawn in by his sheer intensity - his [...]
photo by Simone Cecchetti Marah was the first band I got into when I moved to PA from WI. Their album – Let's Cut The Crap And Hook Up Later On Tonight – will forever be tied to the first few months of my post-college life. A lot has happened to both me and Marah since then. Dave Bielanko's bro Serge left the band. And now it's only Dave and Christine Smith. The duo holed up in a farmhouse in rural PA to record their new album – Life Is A Problem – out June [...]
4AD What do you get when you combine a slowish news day with the last post of the week and a compulsive inability to take a day off? A post led with stuff I don't really know anything about! Yay! Specifically, Californian outfit Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti , whom I understand are both credited and blamed for what the kids are now calling "chillwave". I don't know what that is, particularly, but what I've heard of Mr. Pink is about half interesting trippy pop and about half aimless meandering; "Round & Round", [...]
"We realize our music is a folked up mess of American Rock n Roll." 'Life Is A Problem' , the new album by Marah - released June 22, 2010 on Valley Farm Songs - is an organic, introspective collection of raw and beautiful rock songs that finds the band in an entirely new realm from the garage rock of their past. Buy Music: Marah on amazon.com [...]

The most talented brothers from The City of Brotherly Love are back. Can it really be two years since the Bielankos blessed us with Angels Of Destruction!? Does the release of Life Is A Problem on June 1st signify it's back to business as usual in the Marah camp? Do you find it strange that their extended hiatus happened to coincide with the Phillies improbable 2008 World Series victory? Regardless, Bielanko Inc. is priming the pump for Life Is A Problem (and hoping to snare a few new fans) by releasing [...]

Marah - 10/18/06 - Bonn, Germany - Rockpalast Crossroads Festival
Some of my favorite shows that I will remember forever involved going to see this version of Marah. The band was fantastic, the venues were intimate, and the fans there were some of the best people I've ever met. This lineup toured for the excellent album " If You Didn't Laugh, You'd Cry ." It featured founding members David and Serge Bielanko on vocals and guitar, Kirk Henderson on bass and keyboards, Adam Garbinski on guitar, and Dave Petersen on drums. These five guys together were incredible and this full show is great evidence of that. Check it out and [...]

Marah apologizes to Philly for playing the suckiest show that ever sucked; plans free show in January

Marah: Life Is a Problem (Reviews)
The "Last Rock 'N' Roll Band" manages to resurrect itself with a career highlight in tow. Much has happened to Marah since last we checked in. In 2008, the band, led by brothers David and Serge Bielanko, released Angels of Destruction!. Allowing for the addition of keyboardist/vocalist Christine Smith, this was the second album by that particular lineup of the band -- only the second time this has happened in the band's apparently turbulent history. Some stability seemed good for the band, as Angels expanded upon the themes and styles of...
