Hello Music Lovers! Bruce from Some Velvet Blog back again with another edition of Something Old & Something New . Of the many cool special releases for this year's Record Store Day was a 6 song EP by San Fran rockers Ty Segall called Ty Rex . The band didn't go for the obvious T Rex classix on this; instead they opted for some lesser know jams including "Fist Heart Mighty Dawn Dart" (see below), "Buick [...]
Three things are informing my thought patterns this morning after yesterday’s post. Firstly, the comment from my long-time friend Shamus from yesterday where he makes fine points, but I think misses what I was striving for. Nonetheless: “I just love new music. I love finding it, listening to it, devoutly following it and proselytizing it. I can't imagine not. I know some of this is just for the sake of novelty but it's a habit I never broke. As to why bother listening to music. Well, while we're definitely in a post-rock and post-art in general world there is [...]

As promised in my last post about the Manics show in Toronto, one of this week's mixes will be Manics-themed. It couldn't just be a bunch of Manics album tracks, nor even a bunch of b-sides (frankly, I do enough of those in other mixes and posts, and that would all be too easy). Since they are one of the most dynamic live bands in the world, this mix is comprised of tracks from various bootlegs of Manics gigs. I have nowhere near the amount of bootlegs other Manics fans have, but I delved into what I did have and [...]

While coming back on the boat from the Isle of Mull to the town of Oban on the west of Scotland, I took these photos of a seagull that was successfully following behind us. I presume he (or she) was using the boat's slipstream to grab a free ride. Sometimes the seagull got blown back and had to fight to catch the boat again, but mostly it managed to stay the course. I took loads of photos and here are five that came out quite well along with a few tunes concerning this particular bird [...]

I would have loved to be around for glam rock in the early '70's, especially at the height of Ziggy Stardust and T-Rextasy. It was such a colourful, purely fun time in music history. Rock music was tarted up and made no effort at authenticity, which was a dying concept in music anyway. Glam merely acknowledged that popular music was an act and could be freer as a result of wearing a mask. As with any music movement, it was short-lived and invited a backlash, but it was truly glorious while it lasted. It's usually agreed that the [...]

Seriously, this news bit reeks of trouble. Start laying the groundwork for your alibis right now everyone. Tonight at the much loved Lotus Lounge, our very own lovably obsessive D. Klein (or DJ in Decline to be theatrical) will once again be spinning vintage vinyl. Also, there will be naked women. Should I have lead with that? Dave will start playing obscurities starting around 10, and maintain until very late. The burlesque is unveiled at 11 (and fellas, if you're trying to make [...]

Having trouble shaking it off of my system - second set featuring the Supremes making a delicious beatles cover after swallowing too much candy, Leo Muller righteously homaging Hendrix, a musical document of the day Peggy Lee found funk and Sun Ra telling us to kiss our ass goodbye when them motherfuckers push that button. Enjoy. T. Rex - jewel (t. rex, 1970) The supremes - come together (new ways but love stays, 1970) Sun Ra & his space orchestra - nuclear war (nuclear war, 1982) [...]
