I've known of Marco's music for several years and it dumbfounds me that he hasn't made much more noise online and in print. I tried to put him over the top, but I guess I don't have the pull I wish I had. There are two albums to seek out, first his debut Design in Quick Rotation and then the follow-up Laptop Campfire Speed. Here is what I wrote in my review of his debut on my first blog,

2010 has seemingly been a banner year for the Portland music scene, both from established folks like The Thermals, and newcomers like Y La Bamba and Holcombe Waller . One Portland artist who just sorta keeps on keepin' on without causing more than a gentle ripple in the waters of the biz is the multi-talented Marco Mahler . His 2010 release, Laptop Campfire Speed , expanded on the promise of 2007's Design In Quick Rotation , and while it may be too [...]

I love arguing over and bitching about year-end Best Of lists, until I'm forced to make one. Just Wait 'Til Next Year: Five Eightartists whose 2011 releases I'm eagerly awaiting. The Twilight Singers Okkervill River Carol Bui Hard Nips Shabazz Palaces Anna Calvi Ghostpoet Hyro Da Hero Songs of the Year (no particular order): I may tire of these songs eventually, but I'm not banking on living that long. The best thing and the worst thing about the fact that with all the new technology everyone and his/her cat can make a CD on their laptop and then foist it on the masses. The cat thing can be the only explanation for the Jonas Brothers. But it does mean that people who write for music blogs get their ears exposed to a lot of, um, interesting, and mostly bad, music. But what it also means is that we also get exposed to little gems that would otherwise be overlooked. I love this part. Sometimes [...]

Marco Mahler apparently doesn't know how to take it easy. With Laptop Campfire Speed still buzzing and even the most bullheaded critics (yours truly included) sit up and take notice, he continues to churn out new material, all of which he shares with fans free-of-charge. This week he's offering two Bert Jansch covers that Mahler completists will not want to be without, Running From Home and Blackwater Side . Get'em both , and sign up for his mailing list while you're at it. [...]

Three more tracks from the new album "Laptop Campfire Speed" released June 29 2010 "[Marco Mahler's] music goes beyond the musical boundaries of austere beauty. It can even be life-changing." - Thieves By Tuesday* "[Marco Mahler's] latest, Laptop Campfire Speed, has gotten plenty of critical types to stand up and take notice, and the Mahler bandwagon appears to be boarding." - Read the new interview with MOKB Happy 1st of August from Portland, Oregon! [...]

In a world obsessed with bigger, louder, faster and more outrageous, Marco Mahler seems downright anachronistic. Rather than knock listeners on their collective ass via use of shear force, Mahler's music entices, beckoning the listener to draw ever closer before delivering the gentlest imaginable haymaker. His latest, Laptop Campfire Speed , has gotten plenty of critical types to stand up and take notice, and the Mahler bandwagon appears to be boarding. Luckily, MOKB is riding shotgun, having counted ourselves as big fans the moment his stunning debut, [...]

We're in indieland today, featuring a handful of new and new-to-me artists and labels who might generally be overlooked by the typical folkfan. Which is sort of the point, really: our ongoing New Artists, Old Songs series has always aimed to introduce you to under-the-radar artists, and since radar is subjective, the acoustic side of the hipster canon is certainly fair game. Especially when even in-genre, these folks are still struggling to make a name for themselves. Here's hoping, as always, that you'll help spread the word. [...]

100b

Things have been a bit slack here at 100b but I've been getting back into the flow, starting with cleaning up our extremely backed up inbox. I spent a lot of time last week going through a million mails and listening to a lot of music, both good and not so much, and I have a lot I'd like to share with you as soon as I can. But I couldn't wait on this one, it's just too great to sit in our inbox all lonely and neglected. Up there in the Top 5 Things I've Ever Found In The [...]
![[FEATURE] Marco Mahler](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2673561_lg.jpg)
Marco Mahler has a way with his music. His voice hardly can be defined as the attention-seeking type with the "Hey I'm here, look at me," written all over it but more of a whispery texture that can effectively lure any listener. His is the kind of sound that encourages you to love folk more because of its simplicity. The calm and quiet voice fused with his abstract lyrics played best with the penetrating acoustic guitar. Marco Mahler should not be addled with being categorized as purely folk, his music goes beyond the musical boundaries of austere beauty. It [...]
![Marco Mahler: Laptop Campfire Speed [Album Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2669213_lg.jpg)
Marco Mahler makes dreamy minimalist folk-pop out of Portland. His sophomore release, Laptop Campfire Speed , is the sort of album you'd expect from someone who is brilliantly skilled yet mired by late night insomnia. Soft and introspective, the album has the script of a perfectionist and the quietude of the bedroom. Now I have no clue if Mahler lives in a house with others or an apartment complex or whatnot, but I can visualize him tinkering away at the deepest hours of night, recording a bit here, adjusting levels there, painfully pulling [...]

Traditionally the fourth of July means many things for Americans: parades, fireworks, picnics and Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest . Nathan's yearly contest pits many of the worlds top competitive eaters in a gluttonous attempt to devour as many short tubes of beef as they can in ten minutes. The champion earns a monetary award and a mustard yellow belt . For the past three years American Joey Chestnut has won the competition (last year putting down a record 68 hot dogs). This year I will be joining the competitors in eating [...]

Island shores plucking guitar work with underindulgent el ectro percussion covered lightly with low register, soft, breathy vocals - think Postal Service meets Jack Johnson. I have really enjoyed Marco 's Laptop Campfire Speed and if I wasn't so tired I'd give this interestingly different music a proper review. Just know this: he's good. One of the recurring themes of this blog is the future revenue generation and monetisation of musical product in the post-BitTorrent world. Or, in non-bullshit speak, "Holy Fuck How Are We Going To Make A Living When Everyone Can Download This Shit For Free". Because, dear Reader, I want the people who make the music that I love to be able to make a living out of it 1 . This is, as you might have heard , apparently getting harder and harder. Penniless musicians are forced out onto the street to make a [...]

Marco Mahler is a minimal solo artist from Portland, Oregon he is getting set to release his sophmore album Laptop Campfire Speed, June the 29th . He sent over the first 7 tracks from his new album and let us pick the 3 we like best to post for our readers. I kinda like that system. I am digging all the tracks he sent our way, so it wasn't an easy decision to make. He mixes minimal electronic music with traditional instruments for a very lovely effect. At times he reminds me of [...]

I have a friend we'll call Ken, since that's his real name and he never reads MOKB. Anyway, several years back, while high as a Georgia pine, Ken blew several fingers off his left hand performing an ill-conceived stunt with a short-fused M-80. Now, with July 4th right around the corner, I could stop there. I'd have a perfectly good PSA, the judge would be satisfied and I would be one step closer to having that unfortunate Easter Sunday incident expunged from my record. But I have a reason for telling you this. As part of Ken's physical [...]
