Back at the beginning of February I featured Marcus Foster 's Shadows Of The City after falling in love with its intoxicating, unique sound. Just over a month later, having heard his debut EP I'm pretty sure this is a musical love affair that looks set to continue! Despite comprising of just 4 songs Tumble Down , due for release on Monday 4th April, is a stunning extended introduction to Marcus' music, and the versatility he posseses as a musician. So who is Marcus Foster? Well, having begun to play Piano at the tender [...]

Marcus Foster has rekeased the video for 'Shadows Of The City', the main track from debut EP 'Tumble Down' released on Communion on 4th April. See the video: As you can see, Marcus is born to do what he does. He's certainly one to watch in our eyes this summer, playing our since he was 14 and under the watchful eye of EMI at 18. He says: "I love narrative in songwriting, always have...the ability to delve into character and story, and to lose yourself completely in wherever the song takes you." [...]

Monday Music's the weekly post where SOIWT drops its London-only rule, and goes global: Becoming Real - Closer The first tune on Becoming Real's new record (just released on Cold World Industries ), Closer's a diary entry of insecurity, a constantly concerned dubstep plea to persons unknown. Closer by Becoming Real Hot Sugar - Fuckable (Feat. Baghdaddy) ( mp3 ) Mmm-hmm. Yeah. Oooh. Alright. Mmm. Oh yes. Phew baby. [...]
Listening to an artist for the first time is always an exciting experience, especially when you think "YES! EPIC WIN! " at the end. When Marcus Foster starts singing about a minute into "Tumble Down" there's a classic, bluesy power in his voice, impressive for a 24 year-old. A bit of internet research revealed that as well as being in Mumford & Sons "crew" (can a nu-folk band can have a crew?!) he is an exhibited artist and long time friend of Robert Pattinson. Don't let that put you off though: check out the available-for-download [...]

Marcus Fosters' music is difficult to define, placed as it is somewhere between folk & rock. Whatever it is, it's intoxicating! Latest offering Shadows Of The City begins slowly, with guitars and folky twang to Fosters' voice, before the rest of the band kicks in and it becomes an indie/rock track. The song as a whole is enigmatic, fusing as it does influences from 70s glam rock to contemporary folk, and so much in between. It's epic yet reserved, with fantastic production. Above all, it's different! There are times when it is possible to say [...]

Marcus Foster has been generating quite a buzz recently with the imminent release of his debut EP Tumble Down , out on 4th April. Featuring four tracks rich with languor and melancholic life, the EP's lead track Shadows Of The City got it's first play on Zane Lowe's Radio One show earlier in the week. Such was the listener response (comparisons to Jeff Buckley , Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham et al) that they played the track again in the same show. Now they're pretty big boots to be compared [...]

Line Up: Freelance Whales, Broken Records and Marcus Foster Venue: XOYO, London Date: 2nd February 2011 This was my first jaunt along to the hipster haven and frankly unpronounceable XOYO and what better an occasion to pop that particular cherry than a line-up which includes the disparate sounds of both New York's Freelance Whales and Edinburgh's Broken Records ? [...]

Sometimes all you need is a few opening bars to realise that you have stumbled upon a future star. Such was the case about this time last year with Lissie, and I predict Marcus Foster will be a household name even quicker! His genre-busting star quality exudes on this teaser from his forthcoming EP Tumble Down , although it's being released via the Communion label you can forget the oft-used term Nu Folk. It's a term that has never sat well with me but that's an altogether different story. Q magazine have commented that 'He falls impressively [...]
Since the launch of Communion as a record label and expanded its range of club nights into new locations, there are certain names I've been hearing lots about but not properly paying attention to. The first Communion club night in Belfast last week positively proved that I should have been paying much more attention… IFRAME Embed for Youtube Arriving just after Pete Roe finished his set (Pete unfortunately clashed with Peggy Sue over in another Open House Festival venue), I was treated to a tantalising [...]

To celebrate the truly spectacular lineup of this year's Open House Festival over in Belfast, the kind folk at Open House HQ have made a wondrous MP3 mixtape of the artists they'll be showcasing, and because we're just as kind as they are here at The Blue Walrus, we thought we'd let you have a listen too... You can download the mixtape via this link , and the full tracklisting is below. 01: Andrew Davie - Lost 02: Ex-Lovers - Phonebooth 03: The Lowly Knights [...]

At the risk of sounding like the meteorologists that seems to get it right, only 50% of the time, but I see nothing but blue skies for the rest of the week. Spring maybe around the corner, but it's been a bit damp/snowy 'round these parts, and I put together another "Sad Bastard" mix for your listening pleasures. Alexi Murdoch-All My Days Dexateens -Can You Whoop It She & Him -Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want Yo La Tengo -When It's Dark Blitzen [...]
What is there to say about Communion ? It started off in 2006 as a club night and community at the Notting Hill Arts Club, founded by Ben Lovett (Mumford and Sons), Kevin Jones (Cherbourg) and producer Ian Grimble. But my what an impression it has left as it has provided a platform for the newest bands on London's circuit. The night has seen the likes of Noah and the Whale, Laura Marling, Mumford and Sons, JJ Pistolet and Peggy Sue grace the stage and has become closely associated with the recent resurgence of folk in the capital. [...]

MySpace Opening up with the sound of bird noises might be a bit of an over-sell, but forgiveness comes easily when the multi-layered harmonies of Toronto's The Wilderness Of Manitoba arrive and usher in their debut EP, Hymns Of Love And Spirits . Sharing members with Provincial Parks and Key Witness , The Wilderness of Manitoba come with a very clear and direct mandate - to craft gentle, intricate folk songs of the sort that no one seems to make anymore. Of course, that's a mandate [...]

C=T & photographer extraordinaire Todd Roeth have teamed up again for another addition of Quick Hits . This week, we have caught up with UK singer-songwriter, Marcus Foster . The solo artist is touring behind a a live album and EP. Not to mention appearing on two different soundtracks and having a heartthrob for a bff (my wife thinks he's pretty dreamy). Needless to say, the guy is very busy and most earnest singer songwriter touring the circuit. [...]

[Birthday greetings go out to Kristin Hersh, long may she rock ...] Today: Color me curious about this weekend's shows by Elefant , the New York City quartet who made a modest splash with their tamed-for-radio dance-punk back in 2003-04. "Misfit" was pretty irrestistible, and the band's male model-type frontman Diego Garcia did a great job of selling the rest of their catalogue. Now the band is ready to work on its third album (two new tunes on their MySpace) and is playing tonight at the [...]
