Spin Me All The Way Round

Spin Me All The Way Round Pale - Two Wrongs There's so much going on in this song and it's delivered so well in the vocals and lyrics that you can't help but visualise it. To open a song with such an incredibly well built intro and then the line " Sit round till something get's started " is gold for me. In fact in that first line or 2 Pale lay out the entire song. Getting lost, [...]

See You By The Sheep: Marcus’s Latitude 2013 preview

Evening all. Thanks to Maddie for getting this Latitude-shaped ball rolling. The regular reader will know that Latitude Festival is where some of the earliest conversations about this blog happened (years before APFOS ever came to be). It's where I saw some truly seminal performances form the likes of The National , Andrew bird , Arcade Fire , Sigur Ros , Jarvis Cocker , Thom Yorke, Wild Beasts, Bat For Lashes  and countless others. It's where I first heard the lyric " A pocket full of seeds ", [...]

Seeping in

Seeping in It has been more than 10 months since I last sat and wrote a straight up blog post here. In that time plenty has happened. Certainly enough to make me thing that this blog was something for me to run but not power. As ever girlfriends have come and gone, cities have surrounded and departed, I even got a job. I want to put this all down in one master blog post but I fear that shall never happen. Hella [...]

Marcus Fischer - 100531m

Here's a short bit of ambient/field recording music by sonic explorer Marcus Fischer. Starting in 2009, he endeavoured to complete one creative project every day. I can respect that sort of dedication. As you can deduce, this is his work from 31st May 2010. What you couldn't deduce is that 100531m is the sound of windchimes and distant conversation, all processed with a profound sense of space. Find this and more like it on his website, dust breeding . Marcus Fischer - 100531m [...]

Green Man Day 3

Green Man Day 3 Behold the closing installment of the Green Man Festival 2012, courtesy of Festival Editor: Kathleen. After watching a little bit of Will and the People in Chai Wallahs, on Sunday afternoon we pack into Far Out with the rest of the youth of Green Man to see Alt-J . Since we saw them at Latitude, they’ve gathered even more critical acclaim as Mercury Prize favourites, and their enormous turnout is down to this and perhaps the dubstep rhythms that set their brand of folk off against the [...]

Green Man Day 2

Green Man Day 2 The second installment of our time at Green Man Festival.  Withered Hand ,   Linton Kwessi Johnson ,  Van Morrison ,  Yann Tierson, Tallest Man On Earth ,  Metronomy.  Breakfast is a delicious apricot and almond slice from a Devonian tea-tent near to Far Out, where we’re going to see Withered Hand . The tent is becoming a bog by this point, and the Edinburgh band’s small and devoted following stand atop a small island in front [...]

Green Man Day 1

Green Man Day 1 Our resident festival guru, Kathleen has her take on Green Man this year (with the odd interpolation from Marcus) Green Man marked my first visit to Wales since I was about seven, and even back then we sped past the bilingual signs to go straight to Swansea, in order to catch the ferry to Cork in Ireland. Wales lived up to its rainy reputation on this particular weekend, but the odd burst of sunshine, good food and a tempting line up made it worth the schlep. Day 1 after the jump [...]

Latitude 2012

Latitude is a special festival for me. Since first going in 2007 I've seen some of my favourite acts play some of the most memorable live sets I have ever seen, (Sigur Ros, Arcade Fire, The National etc.) . In 2009 I had a day ticket for the Sunday having returned from 6 months away on the Saturday. It was here that I managed to catch the last of Slow Club 's set and it was almost exactly then that this blog was born. Now 3 years later the blog is where it is [...]

Magic Man

Magic Man Magic Man came to me from a mixtape put together by the fantastically talented Matt Keightley from IntoTheNorthSea . The timing was such that I stuck the album on my phone for future listening alongside a few gb of comfort zone track. Maybe a month later it has percolated through my bright green headphones and it's on repeat. Since we last spoke I have left Exeter and settled into a new routine of commutes, office space and commutes. Of [...]

GoldFlakePaint

A couple of things have made me smile today. Cycling to give my girlfriend a  Gus The Fox  badge before her train leaves and sitting in this strange departure lounge style new addition to our university campus watching a girl enjoy a particularly animated hands free phone call are just 2. The third is the discover of GoldFlakePaint ,  a Bristol based music blog/zine. A welcome FB post from Sparrow And the Workshop about a compilation containing some unreleased stuff of theirs led me to what [...]

No Ceremony

No Ceremony Wading through the traffic of people and sidestepping the taxi cabs, not thinking about anything apart from not being late and how in 40 minutes things will have changed. Changed for good. Hours have been spent over the last few days researching, choosing outfits, double checking train times now feels as distant a past as the years spent doing things you loved and wanted to find an audience for. The glorified past and the frenziedly over-thought future makes the present unbearable. 17 minutes to kill when you have nothing left to do is far worse than 30 [...]

Monument Valley Interview May 14th

Monument Valley Interview May 14th About 4 weeks ago I wrote a piece for this blog which I was genuinely proud of. Every so often the songs that feature on this blog conjure up some strong images and ideas for me and my favourite part of blogging is when these ideas translate into writing which, even if only for me, opens up another door into the same room as the song. The song was the latest single by Monument Valley , Your Cover Blown , and a few days a go i got a chance to meet the man AKA Ned [...]
