Ep.535 - Summerland Tour @ Bridgestone Arena - Nashville, TN 8-6-12 Summerland Tour Video Concert Reviews The end of summer is quickly approaching, and what better way to close it out than by listening to hits that accompanied some of my favorite summers? From what I gather, the Summerland Tour is the brainchild of Everclear’s frontman, Art Alexais, and features Lit, Marcy Playground, Gin Blossoms, Sugar Ray, and Everclear. I thought I skipped out on [...]
At the tender age of 12, one of my closest friends decorated her birthday cake with a picture of Mark McGrath . If you spent any time around popular culture in the ‘90s, you’ve probably seen it: the smirk that launched a thousand Candie’s ads, frosted tips, and Fruit of the Loom boxers down to there. I knew that picture well because it was also plastered above my friend’s guest bed, along with wall-to-wall cutouts from the pages of Twist and Seventeen of celebs like Sisqo, Josh Hartnett, and James Van Der Beek. McGrath was [...]
I grossly underestimated the number of 30-somethings who work hard but party harder and who really, really like their mid-90s alt-radio-rock. This underestimation caused me to miss Marcy Playground's entire set as I stood in line with my 30-something cousin who was attending only his second ever concert. We still made it in time to see LIT (surprisingly modern sounding), Gin Blossoms (looking old but with probably the most recognizable set of songs of the night), Sugar Ray (way more entertaining than expected) [...]

One of the most overplayed tracks of '97, "Sex and Candy" is about as telling of the 902s as any other song. While I'm still trying to get over the original, I'm always up for bringing the 902s back!... or is it forward? Papa Skunk's crunk remix of "Sex and Candy" brings that electro-bass rumbling with a soft piano play on top. I don't know how he got them to work off each other so well, but this is one dank take on Marcy Playground's classic. Marcy Playground - Sex and [...]
Today I've got an incredibly catchy and filthy remix of a 902s classic 'Sex and Candy' by Marcy Playground. Honestly I wasn't too familiar with the original, but I've heard it was a massive 902s hit. Well now we get a filthy glitched out remix of the track featuring the perfect amount of the original. This is a the kind of remix that gets pretty gritty, but won't scare away the non electronic fan. It's done by Papa Skunk another Colorado producer who makes some massive bass music. This track is the perfect change of pace. Turn it up, enjoy! [...]

Marcy Playground: Not the Most Obvious of Valentine’s Day Music, But Hear Me Out…
Mrs. Toad and I tend to ignore Valentine's Day. That's not to say that we are scrooges when it comes to romance, in fact I would say exactly the opposite, but for us the compulsory nature of it doesn't feel very romantic. Everyone's different, but we'd rather take our sentimentality when it naturally wells up during the normal working week, which is actually pretty frequently, so we don't exactly miss out by missing out. We also, as I suppose do most couples, have a few songs which have ended up being strongly associated with our relationship for a [...]
Marcy Playground: Lunch, Recess & Detention
Lunch, Recess & Detention does prove that some of Marcy Playground's more agreeable material didn't make it to a proper record for some reason. But the choices for material to cover, and that's not to speak of the inclusion of a disco remix of the band's sole hit, are questionable at best. Congratulations! Either you stumbled upon this review by accident or you are one of precisely 17 people who still care about Marcy Playground in 2012. Harsh? Sure. However, Marcy Playground were a bit of a punchline to an alternative '90s joke to begin with. They only [...]

Tuesday: Summerland Tour at the LC (Everclear, Sugar Ray, Gin Blossoms, LIT, Marcy Playground)
A week ago it was the early '90s hair metal festival ( America Rocks ) at the Alrosa. This week it's the mid-90s alt-radio rock festival ( Summerland Tour ) at the LC (outdoors). Headlined by Everclear (who, like a majority of the bands on the America Rocks tour, has only one original member, lead singer - Art Alexakis) and Sugar Ray , the undercard on this bill is stacked with bands that had one or two hits played to death (due to requests, undoubtedly) by CD101 ( Marcy Playground - [...]
Show Review: Summerland Tour: Everclear, Sugar Ray, Gin Blossoms, Lit, Marcy Playground at Mountain Winery, 6/28/12
When I first heard about this Summerland tour, I didn't believe it. As a punker kid in high school, these were all bands that I was too good for. I would only listen to Live 105 or KOME in secret, while I told my friends that I was listening to bands like The Queers or [...]

THROWBACK THURSDAY: Marcy Playground – “Sex and Candy”
Yeah I was the 7 year old walking around singing about sex and candy and disco lemonade. Had no idea what any of it meant, but I knew I loved the song. And I still do today. This track spent 15 weeks at number 1 on the billboard charts back in '97, longer than Oasis' Wonderwall believe it or not. Bringing it back for you on this fine THROWBACK THURSDAY. What's good out there bugz? Sorry for the delay on making any posts for y'all out there, and for your patience I bring you five tasty tunes that are sure to have your ear buds craving for more. Leading the way, Kaskade puts his own spin on Zedd's hit "Shave It", providing you with the housey/electro blend that is Kaskade's style. This is followed by the much anticipated and pretty sick collabo that is Tiesto and Steve Aoki's "Tornado". It delivers high energy and good production for a solid track all around. Friday is Like a Rabbit in Headlights
Bloody hell. Holidays are awesome things, but getting back from them to the terrifying number of neglected tasks which pile up in your absence is quite intimidating. So far the best I have managed has been to stare in a startled way at my desk and adopt a facial expression which looks dangerously like Ctrl-Alt-Delete is called for. I think I might wait for lunch and just go an lie in the sun in Inverleith Park instead, and accept the meltdown rather than fight it. Anyhow, that clip at the top is from the BBC's SXSW [...]
